Yamaha launched the WR125R, its entry-level dual sport, in the United States in the 2026 model year.. The bike entered a largely uncontested space dominated by the Honda XR150L, both appealing to new riders as beginner-class dual sports. For 2027, it returns with no major mechanical changes and an MSRP of $3,999.
Yamaha says the WR125R is a lightweight, durable dual-sport designed to introduce beginners to off-roading, thanks to its potent engine and light build. The bike is also said to be affordable and versatile for commuting and off-roading. Beneath its Yamaha YZ- and WR-inspired design, it shows a clear intention to fulfill that role.
The WR125R is powered by a 125cc single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine featuring liquid cooling and variable valve actuation (VVA), both of which are uncommon in this price range. VVA is said to optimize low- to mid-range torque and top-end power. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The manufacturer claims fuel economy of 105 mpg, for a claimed 200-mile range from its 2.1-gallon tank.
The frame is a semi-double-cradle type, supported by KYB suspension tuned for a plush ride and “excellent damping characteristics” in both on- and off-road conditions. The front uses a 41mm telescopic fork with 8.5 inches of wheel travel, and the rear uses a link-type monoshock with 7.3 inches of wheel travel, giving it 9.4 inches of ground clearance.
The bike runs 21/18-inch wire-spoke wheels with Dunlop D605 entry-level 50/50 dual-sport tires. Braking comes from a 267mm disc with a 2-piston caliper up front and a 220mm disc with a single-piston caliper out back. Yamaha says the WR125R features a curb weight of 304 pounds.
The company says the WR125R offers an upright seating position. The MX-style flat seat sits 34.4 inches off the ground and, along with the smooth side panels, is said to allow freedom of movement while cornering and off-roading. Wide MX-style footpegs are also claimed to improve stability and confidence.
As an affordable entry-level dual-sport, the WR125R features a compact LCD instrument panel with smartphone connectivity, enabling call and message notifications and tracking riding data, including fuel consumption, acceleration, location, and more. Up front is a split twin-lens LED headlight, and there’s a single-channel ABS paired to the front wheel.

With a starting MSRP of just under $4,000, the WR125R has one direct rival: the Honda XR150L at $3,399 MSRP. While Yamaha is more expensive, it also brings more sophisticated features, including a liquid-cooled engine, a six-speed gearbox, a 41mm fork, higher suspension travel, and larger 21/18-inch wheels. The Honda dual sport, on the other hand, has a 1.6-inch lower seat height and is 22 pounds lighter, which work in its favor for accessibility. Other dual-sport models feature 200+ cc engines and cost over $5,000.
The Yamaha WR125R is available in Team Yamaha Blue or Black and has an MSRP of $3,999. It is available at Yamaha dealerships across the US.
