Rivian has found a pretty brilliant way to celebrate Halloween this year. It’s teaming up with Ghostbusters to turn its electric vehicles into ghost-hunting machines, complete with spooky sound effects, flashing lights, hidden characters, and even a game involving miniature marshmallow men. The best part? You don’t need to buy a special edition Rivian to join the fun. The company is rolling out a free over-the-air software update for its R1S SUV, R1T pickup, and R2 SUV, bringing the Ghostbusters experience straight to owners’ vehicles. The update became available on October 9 and will stick around until November 2, so Rivian owners have a few weeks to enjoy their cars’ supernatural makeover.

Your Rivian Is Now A Ghostbusting Machine

Rivian has partnered with Sony Pictures to bring the Ghostbusters universe into its vehicles, and the results go well beyond slapping a few logos on the doors. The update introduces a dedicated Ghostbusters app that lets owners activate themed lights, sounds, and displays. There’s even a big red switch that kicks off the experience, making the vehicle’s interior feel like the control panel of the Ghostbusters ghost-hunting ambulance.

Switch on the Slimer-themed interface, and the vehicle’s displays take on a spooky green-and-black appearance. You’ll also find hidden characters and little surprises scattered throughout the menus, giving curious owners plenty of reasons to poke around. Then there’s Trick or Treat Mode. This feature can activate exterior lights and Ghostbusters sound effects to greet costumed visitors, turning your Rivian into a rather elaborate Halloween decoration. Just be mindful of where you park it. Your neighbors might not appreciate an unexpected ghost-hunting light show at midnight.

There’s Even A Game To Play

Rivian hasn’t stopped at lights and noises. The update also introduces a touchscreen game called ‘Mallow Mash, in which players must pop miniature Stay Puft Marshmallow Men before time runs out. Naturally, the game is designed for when the vehicle is parked or charging. Nobody needs their driver trying to pop digital marshmallows while navigating traffic. Owners can also control many of the Halloween features through Rivian’s mobile app and Apple Watch, making it easier to activate the effects without digging through the vehicle’s menus.

Meet The Ecto-R1

Rivian has also built a custom version of its R1S SUV inspired by the iconic Ecto-1 from the Ghostbusters movies. Called the Ecto-R1, it features a white-and-red makeover, roof-mounted emergency lights, sirens, a radar dish, and other equipment inspired by the original movie car. Rivian went beyond the usual vinyl wrap, too. Its team created custom parts and tracked down vintage components to help bring the fictional Ectomobile to life.

The company built six Ecto-R1 vehicles for display at selected Rivian locations across the United States, including New York, Miami, Austin, and several locations in California. It’s a wonderfully nerdy project, and one that fits Rivian’s habit of giving its vehicles seasonal software surprises. For now, Rivian owners can enjoy their own little slice of Ghostbusters without spending a fortune on a movie-inspired custom build.
