Ducati is going all in on its new Desmo450 off-road platform. After debuting its first motocrosser, the Desmo450 MX, last year and recently unveiling its first modern dual-sport, the Desmo450 EDS, the Italian manufacturer has introduced its first competition supermoto: the 2027 Ducati Desmo450 SM.

The First Competition Supermotard From Borgo Panigale

Ducati

Ducati is no stranger to the supermoto segment, as it’s been producing the Hypermotard since 2007. However, this is the first time that the Borgo Panigale-based manufacturer has produced a factory-built, competition-use supermoto like the Desmo450 SM. Unveiled at World Ducati Week 2026 earlier this July, the brand has now confirmed that the Desmo450 SM will be coming to the North American market. The company further developed the Desmo450 MX platform for supermoto racing, fine-tuning the suspension, updating chassis hardware, braking components, electronics, and more.

Ducati

To be abundantly clear: the Desmo450 SM is not street legal. According to Ducati, the 450 SM brings together solutions developed specifically for supermoto racing, with a focus on precise handling, control, and performance. Its power delivery, chassis, and electronics are tuned to support consistent performance with minimal physical effort. In the hands of multiple-time world champion Marc Reiner Schmidt and Team Undici, the 450 SM has already shown potential, winning on its debut. Here’s what the new 450 SM brings to the table.

Showa’s Entry Into Supermoto Competition

Ducati

The suspension, co-developed with Showa, is caliberated for the 450 SM’s supermoto demands. Up front, the 450 SM uses a fully adjustable 49mm USD fork with model-specific springs and Kashima-coated stanchions. Front wheel travel is 11 inches, 1.2 inches less than the 450 MX. Ducati says the front end delivers precision in corners, confidence in a straight line, and control under hard braking, while remaining effective on off-road sections.

Ducati

At the rear, the fully adjustable Showa monoshock works with a progressive link, offering 11.6 inches of wheel travel, the same as the 450 MX. The manufacturer says the monoshock’s settings are tuned to provide traction and balance across the various stages of supermoto circuits. Finally, the billet-machined triple clamps are wider to accommodate the wider front wheel.

16.5/17-inch Wire-Spoke Wheels

Ducati

Speaking of wheels, the 450 SM swaps the MX’s 21/19-inch wheels for smaller, wider tubeless Takasago Excel wire-spoke 16.5/17-inch wheels. Ducati claims the new setup reduces rotating and unsprung mass by 2.6 pounds, helping improve handling and suspension response. The 16.5-inch front wheel limits tire choices but is favored in proper supermotos for its sharp turn-in and a large contact patch. The rear uses a 17-inch wheel. Both are shod in Metzeler Racetec Slick SM tires, the same type used in the World Supermoto Championship.

Same Frame, Updated Geometry

Ducati

The Desmo450 SM runs a twin-spar aluminum frame but receives revised geometry for sharper steering response. The rake is reduced from 27.3 degrees to 25.4 degrees, while the trail goes from 4.65 inches to 3.3 inches. The resulting aggressive chassis setup should suit supermoto riding better. The SM also gains 9 pounds over the MX, weighing 240 pounds without fuel, while its seat height drops from 38.2 inches to 36.6 inches.

Brembo/Galfer Braking Setup

Ducati

The Italian firm claims the Desmo450 SM’s braking setup is designed to provide power and modulation suitable for supermoto riding. Braking comes from a large 310mm Galfer floating disc with an aluminum flange, a Brembo Stylema radial-mount caliper, and a PR15x19 radial master cylinder up front, complemented by a 240mm Galfer rotor with a Brembo floating caliper out back.

Transmission And Final Drive

Ducati

The Desmo450 SM runs the 449.6cc Desmo 450 engine, first introduced on the 450 MX, producing 63.5 hp at 9,400 rpm and 39.5 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. The desmodromic valve timing allows the revs to climb to an 11,900 rpm ceiling, giving riders a broad operating range and letting them hold each gear longer while reducing unnecessary shifts.

Ducati

Power is sent through a 5-speed transmission and Suter slipper clutch with Brembo hydraulic control. The latter is specifically calibrated for the 450 SM to help manage rear-wheel slip during aggressive corner entry. An upshift-only quickshifter is also standard. For the final drive, Ducati has added two teeth to the front sprocket and removed two from the rear, which should reduce acceleration slightly while increasing the bike’s top speed, letting riders make the most of the engine’s extended rev range.

Electronic Rider Aids And Predictive Maintenance

Ducati

The Desmo450 SM carries over much of the MX’s electronics package, including an hourmeter, tip-over sensor, 2 ride modes, launch control, engine brake control, and the available X-Link app. Ducati Traction Control is calibrated for the 450 SM, offering 4 levels of adjustment and the option to deactivate it completely.

Other minor changes include:

  • Handguards and shortened mudguards have been redesigned for supermoto use
  • Fork guards are shorter to accommodate the wider front wheel
  • 9-gallon fuel tank is larger than that on the 450 MX and EDS

Maintenance Intervals And Predictive Maintenance

Ducati

The 450 SM requires an oil change every 15 hours of riding, piston replacement and a valve clearance check every 45 hours, and a full engine overhaul every 90 hours. To make servicing easier, the three-compound paste gaskets are replaced with a metal gasket on the cylinder head and rubber gaskets on the alternator and clutch cover. This supports the maintenance schedule and simplifies access during service. Ducati also introduces predictive maintenance to the supermoto class, available with the optional Com-Link module. This system is designed to monitor wear on engine components, assess stress based on your usage, and recommend service intervals accordingly.

Ducati Desmo450 SM Rivals The 2027 KTM 450 SMR

The 2027 Ducati Desmo450 SM enters the competition supermoto segment against the established KTM 450 SMR, which carries an MSRP of $12,499. The KTM’s 450cc single produces around 63 horsepower. It is paired with 16.5/17-inch Alpina tubeless wire-spoke wheels with CNC-machined hubs, Metzeler Racetec slicks, a Brembo M50 radial front caliper, and fully adjustable WP XACT suspension. It weighs 240.9 pounds without fuel. Electronics include engine maps, traction control, launch control, and an upshift-only quickshifter, while KTM recommends a valve-clearance check every 45 hours.

Ducati

On paper, the Desmo450 SM is extremely close to its Austrian rival, with similar power, weight, wheel sizes, slicks, suspension adjustability, and a high-end Brembo braking system. However, the 450 SM differentiates itself with its desmodromic valve train, which allows an extended rev range, and sophisticated electronics with available predictive maintenance. At the same time, its Brembo Stylema caliper is slightly higher-spec than KTM’s M50. The difference ultimately comes down to engine characteristics and electronics.
