New electric Audi A2 e-tron unveiled
Audi has unveiled the A2 e-tron, a new entry-level electric model with three different battery size options which is arriving in October.
Designed and built in Germany, the compact EV will be the new entry point of Audi’s electric range. Its combination of hatchback-like proportions and raised bodywork puts it into competition with models including the Volvo EX30, Mini Aceman and upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA Electric.
Despite reviving the A2 name, the new model bears little resemblance to the unusually tall, lightweight Audi A2 sold between 1999 and 2005. Instead, it’s a purpose-built electric model with a short wheelbase under three metres, designed with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency.
Audi claims a drag coefficient of 0.24 – that makes the new A2 as aerodynamically efficient as the sleek Audi e-tron GT.
Three batteries and up to 401 miles of range
There are four rear-wheel-drive powertrain options, producing 170hp, 190hp, 231hp and 326hp respectively.
The entry-level 170hp version uses a 52kWh battery and offers up to 262 miles of range. The 190hp model gets a 61kWh battery, increasing range to 320 miles.
Higher-powered versions use a much larger 84kWh battery. The 231hp model has the longest range at 401 miles, while the 326hp version manages 391 miles and accelerates from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds.
Charging performance also varies according to battery. The 52kWh version can accept 100kW DC charging and takes 24 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge, while the 61kWh model supports up to 105kW.
The 84kWh battery increases the maximum charging rate to 183kW, with a 10% to 80% charge taking 29 minutes.
Drivers can choose between several levels of regenerative braking, while a separate setting allows one-pedal driving all the way to a standstill.
Vehicle-to-home charging available in the UK
The A2 e-tron will also offer bidirectional charging, allowing electricity stored in its battery to be used elsewhere.
Vehicle-to-load functionality can power compatible electrical equipment, while Audi says UK customers will also be able to use the car as a home energy storage system through vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology and a compatible DC wallbox.
However, there’s some conflicting information in Audi’s announcement, as a later section states that V2H will initially be available only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. UK availability will therefore need clarification before the car goes on sale.
New interior technology
Inside, an 12-inch digital instrument display and 13-inch curved central touchscreen are standard. Audi’s voice assistant incorporates AI technology, while the built-in route planner can automatically calculate charging stops and prepare the battery before reaching a rapid charger.
A new modular storage system uses magnetic attachment points in the centre console for accessories such as cupholders and charging cable bags, while wireless charging for two smartphones is available.
Boot capacity stands at 396 litres, expanding to 1,336 litres with the rear seats folded. The 231hp and 326hp models also get a small 13-litre storage compartment beneath the bonnet.
Adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic assistance, parking sensors and a reversing camera are among the standard driver assistance features. Higher-specification versions will be available with equipment including a 360-degree camera and automated parking.
Pricing and availability
The Audi A2 e-tron will be available to order in the UK from October, with the first cars expected to reach customers in early 2027.
Prices will start at around £32k, although Audi has yet to confirm the full UK model range and specifications. The A2 e-tron will be built alongside the combustion-engined A3 at Audi’s Ingolstadt factory in Germany.
