Missed out on an Alpine A110? Grab a used example for £35k
Our favourite has always been the softer original car, though, so if you really want the added grunt, go for the more cruising-oriented Légende GT or GT.
These softer cars are more comfortable in Britain, gliding over bumps with deftness akin to a Lotus, and quicker from point to point. On an undulating, bumpy B-road, the more forgiving travel keeps the body flatter and more flexible more of the time, allowing fewer unsettling movements.
Those drivers who regularly enjoy the glassy roads of France, Italy and Germany might prefer the better body control afforded by the stiffer springs, mind you.
The steering is electrically assisted, so not quite as tactile as racks of old but very direct and accurate. What really makes the A110 fun, though, is how you can steer with your right foot, letting its back drift around the corner’s apex, then applying a stab of the throttle to point the nose straight again.
The A110’s cabin is much nicer to look at than an Elise’s but not as well equipped or solidly built as a Cayman’s. It’s is still very habitable, although the lack of cupholders will annoy some.
In 2023, Alpine dropped a £100k hardcore special. The A110 R was even lighter (1084kg on our scales, or 40kg less than others we had weighed), with its carbonfibre wheels and body panels and sports exhaust. However, it was no more powerful.
