Lexus NX update brings PHEV range boost and cuts buttons
The Lexus NX has gained a new plug-in-hybrid powertrain that brings a significant boost in electric range as part of the SUV’s first major update since it arrived in the UK four years ago.
The NX 450h+, which was Lexus’ first PHEV, will now be capable of more than 62 miles on electric power alone, up from the previous 45 miles. This is thanks to a new 23kWh battery pack – an increase in capacity of 5kWh – as well as new electricals that improve efficiency.
The changes also bring an extra 1bhp, for a combined 303bhp, and the ability to tow up to 1500kg.
The regular-hybrid NX 350h has also gained a new battery derived from that in the new ES saloon, which is 9.2kg lighter than previously.
Lexus claims both derivatives will have the lowest CO2 emissions in the NX’s class, which could also reduce its benefit-in-kind cost for the UK’s company car drivers.
In addition to revised powertrains, the NX has received Lexus’ new-look spindle grille that, together with other styling tweaks, is said to reduce drag.
Inside, it follows the ES in dispensing with physical heater and air-conditioning switches in favour of digital controls, with a large 14in infotainment touchscreen and haptics embedded in the dashboard.
It also brings several changes intended to foster a sportier feel, including a lower-set driver’s seat, a smaller steering wheel and retuned electric power steering. New valved dampers, tuned on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, are claimed to improve the balance between handling and ride comfort.
The updated NX is expected to arrive in the UK early next year, with prices starting just below £50,000 for the 350h or around £52,000 for the 450h+.
