We dug into the production car record books to find the most powerful examples ever built, and the results are genuinely staggering.

Performance cars have increasingly favored small-block V8 units, with lighter and more compact designs able to generate extreme power thanks to advanced technology like turbocharging. With that in mind, here is a look through the production car archives to find the most powerful small-block V8 engines ever produced.

The most powerful small-block V8 powertrain ever created comes courtesy of American supercar manufacturer SSC, which developed its own V8 for its Tuatara. Having used a Chevrolet LS6-based engine for its first offering, the Ultimate Aero, the brand opted to do things its own way for its follow-up.

Keeping the Tuatara as light as possible was essential to achieving ultra-high top speeds, which led SSC to commit to a small-block design. This stands in contrast to fellow American automaker Hennessey, which went the big-block route with the 6.6-liter V8 powering its Venom F5, released around a similar time.

Where the engine in the Aero displaced 6.3 liters, SSC’s bespoke twin-turbo unit measures 5.9 liters and produces an extraordinary 1,350 hp on standard 91-octane fuel. Running on more potent methanol or ethanol, the V8 climbs to a physics-bending 1,750 hp — making it easily the most powerful small-block V8 ever fitted to a production car.

What Makes The SSC V8 Engine Special

It shares a similar architecture to GM’s LS engines, though those served only as inspiration — every component is purpose-designed by SSC or its partners. To keep mass to a minimum, the block is cast from aluminum.

The engine also uses a flat-plane crankshaft which, while offering a weight advantage over the more common cross-plane layout, inherently generates aggressive vibrations. SSC worked closely with experienced engine builders Nelson Racing to tame the V8, carefully exploiting the exhaust scavenging effect that a flat-plane crank makes possible.

As per Summit Racing Equipment, flat cranks create high-speed exhaust gas pulses that travel down the primary header tube of the exhaust system. These pulses generate alternating high and low pressures, with the low-pressure zones effectively pulling spent gases out of the cylinders. This also draws more fresh air into the engine, freeing up additional power.

Alongside the aluminum block, the 5.9-liter powerhouse also uses aluminum pistons and titanium connecting rods to keep overall weight to a minimum. The turbos are equally special — custom units designed by Nelson Racing featuring more aerodynamic compressor blades and exhaust turbines.

The improved aerodynamics allow the turbos to ingest a greater volume of air, translating directly into more power. In total, the engine tips the scales at just 428 pounds according to Hagerty, with its prodigious output channeled to the rear wheels through a seven-speed semi-automatic transmission.

Unsurprisingly, an engine capable of producing upwards of 1,700 hp generates a considerable amount of heat. To keep temperatures in check — protecting components and ensuring consistent power delivery — SSC employs a pair of air-to-water intercoolers and an aluminum intake manifold.

Connected to a pair of electronic throttle bodies, the intercoolers monitor engine temperatures in real time and hold them well within their optimal operating range.

The Monster V8 Helped The Tuatara Break The Production Top Speed Record

SSC and Nelson Racing’s hard work paid off in spectacular fashion. With Dr. Larry Caplin — owner of the first Tuatara built — behind the wheel, the car recorded a two-way average speed of 289.2 mph in February 2021. That run eclipsed the previous record holder, the Koenigsegg Agera RS, by a full 5 mph.

While the 5.9-liter engine in the Tuatara is unrivaled in terms of outright small-block V8 power, that hasn’t stopped others from pushing the limits. Saleen developed a modern evolution of its formidable S7 supercar, with the American tuning house upgrading a total of seven original S7s to create the LM.

Only three examples were ultimately completed, according to RM Sotheby’s, making it not only one of the most powerful American supercars ever built, but also one of the most exclusive.

Starting with the same basic engine as the standard S7 — a 7.0-liter V8 — Saleen went to work extracting every last drop of performance. That V8 traces its roots to the Ford Windsor 351 small-block (5.9 liters), bored and stroked out to 7.0 liters, or 427 cubic inches. Saleen had previously built a twin-turbo version of the S7 producing 750 hp.

The all-aluminum engine — encompassing the block, pistons, cylinder heads, and intake manifold — was engineered to produce big power while keeping weight to a minimum. The connecting rods and crankshaft were forged from billet steel, as these are the components that endure the most continuous stress. Drive went through a 6-speed manual gearbox, with a limited-slip differential ensuring optimal traction.

A compression ratio of 11.0:1 left the engine with considerable headroom for further development. True to that potential, Saleen changed relatively little about the fundamental engine architecture for the LM. The headline upgrade was a pair of uprated turbos, fed by a specially designed intake mounted in the roof.

The results were dramatic. Power leaped from 750 hp to around 1,300 hp per RM Sotheby’s, while torque surged to a planet-spinning 850 lb-ft. Combined with aerodynamic bodywork that improves on the standard car, the S7 LM is capable of reaching 240 mph.

A Pair Of Million-Dollar Small-Block-Powered Supercars

Good luck getting your hands on one, though — one of the three examples sold for just over $1 million through RM Sotheby’s. That is still considerably less than the Tuatara, which carried a starting price of around $1.6 million according to Business Insider. The premium is arguably justified, given that the Tuatara’s V8 remains the most powerful production small-block V8 ever built.
