On Flag Day, Larry Courtney turned Detroit’s Belle Isle into a red, white, blue, and very loud parking lot. Courtney and his wife, Verna, helped gather nearly 300 Corvettes from 11 states to form a giant American flag, a display he believes ranks as the largest Corvette -made flag ever arranged. The event also raised attention for veterans’ charities.

Chevrolet says production will be capped at just 20 units total.

The gathering carried the “Corvettes on the Island” name, and it needed more than a few nice-weather prayers. Courtney had to find enough red, white, and blue cars to make the flag look right from above. That sounds simple until someone remembers that Corvette owners love black wheels, special stripes, and paint colors with names that belong on a steakhouse cocktail menu.

The main flag used the red, white, and blue Corvettes, while other colors helped make up the flagpole.

Courtney had the right tool for the job: people. GM says his contact list includes about 3,500 email addresses and 2,500 phone numbers, which might make him the only man in America who can fill Belle Isle with Corvettes faster than most people can organize dinner.

10 Things To Expect As A First Time Corvette Owner

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning on picking up an example of America’s sports car for the first time.

Chevrolet Brought The Good Stuff, Too

Chevrolet was there as well. The company brought the Stars & Steel edition Corvettes, which mark America’s 250th anniversary with flag-inspired graphics, special trim, and limited production. Chevy says the Corvette version will be limited to 250 vehicles and will come with details such as full-length stripes, commemorative touches, and an interior plaque with the build number.

The 2027 Grand Sport gave the crowd something fresher to stare at between conversations. The new model brings a naturally aspirated 6.7-liter LS6 V8 with 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. It uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, standard Magnetic Ride Control, and an available quad center-exit exhaust, a first for a pushrod V8 in the C8 generation.

The event also supported Operation Homefront, Helmets to Hardhats, Veterans Court of Wayne County, and the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund. Chevrolet made a $20,000 donation tied to the four veteran-serving groups.

HotCars Take

Courtney’s Flag Day Corvette gathering is cool because it hits the part of car culture that spec sheets miss. The bigger story sits in the miles, the road trips, the handshakes, and the owners who drove in from 11 states just to park in formation. Corvette fans often say the car brings people together, and on Belle Isle, Courtney proved it with nearly 300 rolling pieces of fiberglass, horsepower, and pride.
