BYD, the global leading manufacturer of New Energy Vehicles (plug-in hybrid and fully electric) confirms prices for the DOLPHIN G DM-i: the only supermini with plug-in hybrid technology. Mixing compact dimensions, family car practicality and the ability to travel up to 65 miles on electricity alone, the DOLPHIN G DM-i is a revolution for small cars.

The DOLPHIN G DM-i is designed for customers seeking an affordable compact car that combines the zero-emissions ability of a pure EV with the ultimate long-distance flexibility of a hybrid. BYD’s Super Hybrid with DM technology delivers an EV driving experience, with strong, smooth acceleration from its front-mounted electric motor and enough range from its Blade Battery to complete daily commutes without using any petrol.

Despite these class-leading levels of technology, prices for the DOLPHIN G DM-i start at just £23,990. Available to order now, the first UK customer deliveries are due in September.

STRONG SPECIFICATION ACROSS ALL FOUR TRIM LEVELS

The DOLPHIN G is available in four trim levels, with a strong level of specification from the outset. Every model benefits from LED headlights, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors and rain sensing wipers as standard. Inside, the features continue with automatic air conditioning, 8.8-inch TFT cluster display, satellite navigation, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

As with every BYD, safety technology is non-negotiable. As a result, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and front and rear parking sensors are all included as standard across the line-up.

The eye-catching Sunset Orange pearlescent paint is offered as standard, while four more colours – Skiing White, Time Grey, Obsidian Black and Ocean Blue, are all available as a £750 option. Active, Boost and Comfort trims all come with a black interior, while a grey colour scheme is available at no extra cost.

The Active starts from just £23,990 and features a 7.4kWh Blade Battery which can be topped up with 3.3kW charging. This entry point to Super Hybrid with DM technology offers 24.8 miles of electric-only range, a combined range of 633 miles, and a weighted fuel consumption of 108.6mpg. On the outside, the Active can be distinguished from the rest of the DOLPHIN G DM-i range by its 16-inch alloy wheels, while other standard features include fabric interior upholstery, a four-speaker audio system, a 10.1′ touchscreen and a rear-view camera.

The Boost is the second step of the DOLPHIN G DM-i line-up, and costs £26,990. The key benefit of the Boost over the Active is the step up in powertrain spec, introducing the larger 18.3kWh battery, which lifts the electric-only range to 65 miles and the total driving range to 646 miles, and the weighted fuel consumption improves to 201.7mpg. Power also increases, taking the total output from 176PS to 212PS. AC charging increases from 3.3kW to 6.6kW, while DC charging is also available, offering speeds of up to 39kW for faster charges during longer journeys.

In terms of equipment, the Boost gains several comfort features, including exterior mirrors with an electrically folding function, privacy glass, a vegan leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel, heated front seats and additional air vents plus two 18W USB-C ports for rear seat occupants. On-board technology takes an uplift, with a larger 12.8-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker audio system, multi-colour ambient lighting and 15W wireless and cooled smartphone charging.

The Comfort, priced from £28,490, takes yet another step up in design, luxury and technology. From the outside, it’s set apart from the Boost with 18-inch alloy wheels, and exterior mirror footlights. The seats feature a fabric and vegan leather upholstery, and the driver’s seat gains electrical adjustment. In-car technology gains a significant upgrade with Google built-in added to the infotainment system; introducing Google Maps, Google Assistant and access to the Play Store, opening up the availability of extra apps. A full 360°-view camera also features, making low-speed manoeuvres even simpler.

The range is headed by the Sport trim, which is priced from £29,490. Externally, the Sport can be distinguished from the rest of the range by its black 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the seats are trimmed in artificial suede, offered in black with either orange or blue accents. The accents are matched to the Sport’s two exterior colour options: Sunset Orange and Ocean Blue.
