Toyota has confirmed pricing and specs for the 2027 Land Cruiser, and the numbers make a strong case against pricier midsize luxury off-roaders. The base Land Cruiser 1958 starts at $58,080 and comes standard with full-time four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, and locking center and rear differentials, hardware that rivals often reserve for upper trims or optional packages.

That price undercuts the Lexus GX by thousands and lands well below what many buyers pay for a comparably equipped 4Runner. Add in a 39% jump in fuel economy over the last V8-powered generation, and the 2027 Land Cruiser is shaping up as one of the more compelling body-on-frame values on sale.

What $58,080 Actually Buys You

Every 2027 Land Cruiser, including the base 1958 trim, runs Toyota’s 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. It produces 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. That torque figure matters more than the horsepower number for anyone actually planning to use this SUV off-road, since it’s what drives low-speed crawling performance and towing response.

The 1958 trim isn’t a stripped-down capability tease, either. It comes with the full-time 4WD system, the two-speed transfer case, center and rear locking differentials, Crawl Control, and a front skid plate standard. Buyers get 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a 31-degree approach angle, a 25-degree breakover angle, a 22-degree departure angle, and a 6,000-pound max tow rating. Toyota isn’t gating the serious off-road hardware behind a higher trim level here, which is the real news for shoppers comparing spec sheets.

The pricier Land Cruiser trim starts at $64,155 and adds items like ventilated SofTex seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a power liftgate, Multi-Terrain Select, the Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system, and the Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism for better wheel articulation off-road.

Fuel Economy Jumps 39% Over The Old V8

The 2027 Land Cruiser is rated at 23 mpg combined, a significant improvement over the 2021 model’s 14 mpg combined. That’s roughly a 39% efficiency gain, and it translates into real savings: Toyota’s own math works out to about 279 gallons of gasoline saved every 10,000 miles, or roughly $1,678 in fuel costs at $6 per gallon. Over five years of typical driving, that gap adds up to thousands of dollars back in an owner’s pocket.

The platform shift explains a lot of that gain. The current Land Cruiser rides on the smaller 250-series Prado architecture rather than the global 300-series platform, shared with the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, and Lexus GX. It’s a fully boxed ladder frame with independent double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link solid rear axle, a setup that keeps the on-road manners in check without giving up off-road structure.

How It Stacks Up Against The GX And 4Runner

Pricing data from TrueCar shows the gap is even wider once real-world transactions are factored in: Land Cruiser buyers are averaging around $58,610, compared to roughly $69,872 for GX buyers, an $11,262 difference. The GX counters with a more powerful twin-turbo V6 and an available third row, but the Land Cruiser wins clearly on both purchase price and fuel economy, with EPA figures around 22 city/25 highway versus the GX’s 15 city/21 highway.

The 4Runner remains the cheaper option with more trim variety and its own specialized off-road configurations, but it doesn’t match the Land Cruiser’s more upscale cabin and refinement. That’s really the trade-off Toyota is selling here: the 4Runner is more affordable and more specialized, the GX is more powerful and more luxurious, and the Land Cruiser sits in between with genuine off-road hardware and a much friendlier price tag.

The Trade-Offs Buyers Should Know About

The 2027 Land Cruiser isn’t without compromises. The hybrid system raises the cargo floor compared to a conventional layout, the turbocharged four-cylinder doesn’t deliver the low-end growl the old V8 was known for, and the added hybrid componentry means more complexity than Toyota’s traditionally simple body-on-frame trucks. Long-term reliability data on this specific hybrid platform is still developing, though Toyota backs it with a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty on the hybrid battery, an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on certain hybrid components, and two years of complimentary ToyotaCare maintenance.

For buyers cross-shopping the GX and 4Runner, those trade-offs are the ones worth weighing against the price gap and the fuel savings. The specs suggest Toyota built the 2027 Land Cruiser to be the one-size-fits-all option in this class, not the outright leader in any single category.
