Most Western enthusiasts couldn’t name a single Super Taikyu result. That’s about to matter. Japanese outlet Response reported this week that Honda is targeting a 2027 production launch for the Civic Type R HRC — a facelifted FL5 variant developed directly from Honda’s endurance racing program, with a price around 7 million yen (roughly $45,600 USD).
This isn’t a wing kit with an HRC sticker. The badge stands for Honda Racing Corporation, the same arm that runs the company’s Formula 1 and MotoGP programs. When it appears on a road car, it signals competition-derived hardware — and in this case, the hardware traces back to a Japanese endurance series that’s been quietly doing the engineering work that shapes the next Type R.
Super Taikyu is a Japanese endurance racing series — multi-class, multi-hour races that prioritize reliability and development over outright lap times. It’s not Super GT glamour. It doesn’t get simulcast coverage in Europe or North America. But Honda has been using it as a rolling laboratory for exactly the kind of sustained, high-load development that translates to road cars.
The HRC-K20C engine at the center of the Civic Type R HRC story was developed for and refined in Super Taikyu competition. Aero configurations, cooling systems, and suspension tuning all get stress-tested across race distances in a way that a short test program or a Nürburgring session simply can’t replicate. The Tokyo Auto Salon concept shown in January is reportedly serving as an active test car in the series right now — meaning the car you saw under camouflage is doing real race laps, not sitting in a design studio.
That’s the pipeline. Race series develops hardware. Hardware migrates to road car. It’s the same logic Toyota applied with GR and Nissan with Nismo, but Honda’s chosen development venue has been largely invisible to Western audiences until this moment.
The performance upgrades described by Japanese press go well beyond software. Reports point to revised suspension tuning, larger brakes, forged wheels, and additional carbon fiber components — with potential weight savings of around 44 to 66 pounds over the standard FL5. The current US-spec Type R makes 315 horsepower from its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four; the HRC is expected to push that to approximately 335 hp through intake, exhaust, and ECU changes. The more significant possibility — actual componentry from the HRC-K20C racing engine — remains unconfirmed by Honda, but Japanese sources have floated it.
The visual changes on the concept are substantial and clearly functional: a larger front intake, twin air guides, an extended lip spoiler, bigger rear wing endplates, a chunkier diffuser, and an HRC-branded radiator visible behind the lower grille. An Akrapovič exhaust appeared on the show car. Type R development chief Hideki Kakinuma has reportedly framed the project around balanced performance gains rather than chasing another Nürburgring record — which suggests the HRC is being engineered to feel better across a full driving session, not just on a single flying lap.
The GR Corolla and Elantra N have raised the stakes in the compact performance segment. The GR Corolla brings 300 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive; the Elantra N counters with a dual-clutch option and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The standard FL5 Type R is already regarded as one of the best front-wheel-drive performance cars on the planet, but the HRC variant is clearly Honda’s answer to the halo-model arms race.
At roughly $45,600 — about $5,000 more than the standard Japanese-market Type R — the HRC would sit closer in spirit to a GR GRMN or a Nismo special than to a routine trim upgrade. One detail worth noting: individual HRC components are expected to be available separately through Honda dealers, so buyers who can’t justify the full package may still be able to spec the hardware piecemeal. None of this is official. Honda has confirmed nothing — no specs, no production timeline, no pricing. But a facelifted standard CTR is expected to be revealed before the end of 2026, and the HRC is expected to follow in 2027. The US availability question remains open, particularly if the engine upgrade requires separate emissions certification.
Super Taikyu results won’t start trending on Western enthusiast forums overnight. But for anyone tracking what the next Type R will actually do — how it will feel, what it will weigh, how hard it will pull — that series just became essential reading. Honda is doing its development work there, and the road car is the proof.
