In a world gone head over heels for SUVs, Subaru found itself in something of a predicament back in the 1990s. Though well-respected for its all-wheel-drive powertrains, the brand didn’t have an SUV offering. As a workaround, the decision was made to elevate the Legacy wagon’s ride height and infuse it with a bit of off-road cachet by calling it “Outback.” Australian actor Paul Hogan, whose “Crocodile Dundee” character had gained him notoriety, was brought in as a pitchman.

So the Legacy has been retired, and the Outback has debuted an all-new, more rugged look. It will be interesting to see how the Outback’s fans will respond though. After all, the model’s relationship to the Legacy was visually apparent for decades. This is no longer the case, which raises the question: was the Outback popular because it didn’t really look like an SUV?

This may have occurred to the management team at Fuji Heavy Industries as well. Given that the Outback still somewhat looks like a station wagon from certain angles, the management team may have slightly hedged its bet.The new design distinguishes the Outback while maintaining the barest hints of its legacy. (Yeah, I know that was bad. But hey, it was right there, I had to take it!)

Driving Impressions And Performance

All-new styling aside, the Outback’s powertrain choices are carried over from the 2025 model year. My test model was fitted with Subaru’s turbocharged 2.4-liter flat four, tuned to produce 260 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm. A continuously variable transmission routed the engine’s output to all four wheels.

According to my Omega Speedmaster, the Outback registered six-second runs to 60 mph when launched from a standing start. While not exactly a blistering time these days, it’s enough to satisfy most drivers in day-to-day situations. What’s more, the engine displayed admirable refinement when it was worked hard. Revving freely without a trace of harshness, the powerplant pulled effortlessly to its 6,000 rpm redline.

The Outback’s ride quality was also comfortably smooth. Yes, the cabin could have been a bit less noisy for my tastes. Wind and road noise were more apparent than I would have preferred, but it’s a Subaru, not a Lexus. Handling was proficient, though the Outback could have felt more buttoned down for my tastes.

This surprised me, as I didn’t have that concern when I drove the Outback with the Wilderness package. That model’s adaptable suspension system provided more stability—which would be a nice option to apply to standard Outback models. The Subaru’s steering was accurate, though lacking in feel. Again, though, the vast majority of people would be satisfied with the Outback’s demeanor.

According to the EPA, the 2026 Subaru Outback Limited XT is good for 21 mpg in the city, 29 on the highway, and 24 overall. The best I observed was 22 mpg combined. This was a mix of city, highway, and light off-road driving.

Interior Design And Comfort

A new interior treatment came with the exterior redesign. Thoughtful material choices applied to handsome architecture gave the Outback’s passenger compartment positive appeal. The leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel were heated. Heat was applied to the outboard seating positions in the rear as well.

Adjustable 12 ways, the driver’s seat included a thigh extension. The front passenger’s seat offered eight-way adjustability and remarkable comfort. Both rows were endowed with good leg, head, and shoulder room. Ingress and egress were easily accomplished, thanks to the Outback’s carefully considered ride height.

Technology And Ease Of Use

The focal point of the dash was a 12.1-inch infotainment system user interface. The underlying software was upgraded for the 2026 model year, which makes it more responsive to inputs, whether by touch or voice, than before. The home screen offered a menu bar at the top, which provided quicker access to navigation, music, and telephone functions.

Technology for technology’s sake is applied all too often these days, when a simple button is far more convenient. Thus, I appreciated the inclusion of physical buttons and knobs for the controls I used most often. I love it when the product people win out over the engineers in these instances.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility were standard. Key driver assistance tech included forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, as well as smart cruise control with lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and highway hands-free driving up to 85 mph could be had as options.

Cargo And Storage Space

The new styling raised the Outback’s roof by two inches, which improved cargo capacity as well as passenger comfort. Compared to the outgoing model, cargo capacity is quoted at 35 cubic feet with the rear seat deployed and 81 cubic feet with it folded. Configuring the seatbacks to fold individually, in a 60/40 fashion, ensured flexibility. The usual array of door pockets, center console storage, and, of course, a glovebox, were present and accounted for.

Anyone considering this new Outback might want to cross-shop it against the 2026 Mazda CX-50 and the 2026 Toyota RAV4. The Mazda exudes a sporty near-luxury vibe. The Subaru comes across as a semi-rugged sport utility vehicle. The Toyota’s mien is that of a practical family hauler that just happens to look like an SUV. Ultimately, all three are intended to do the same job—deliver competent family transportation while offering buyers their preferred sense of style.

A driver-centric proposition, the Mazda CX-50 Turbo’s 256 horsepower (when run on premium fuel) 2.5-liter turbocharged engine gives up four horsepower to its Subaru rival. However, the Mazda’s engine also makes 322 lb-ft of torque (again, when run on premium fuel). Additionally, the Mazda’s interior treatment radiates a far more upscale ambiance than the Subaru’s. The CX-50’s EPA estimates are 23 mpg in the city, 29 on the highway, and 25 combined. The Mazda is also a bit less costly than the Subaru, with a base price of $42,900 for the trim closest to the Outback Limited XT’s.

A hybrid-only proposition, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Limited delivers better fuel economy than either the Mazda or the Subaru. How does 41 mpg combined sound? Of course, the other side of that is 236 horsepower, compared to 260 for the Subaru and 256 for the Mazda (on premium fuel). The Outback is also larger than the RAV4, so it has more passenger space than the Toyota, and slightly more cargo capacity. And, while both will most likely see more time on pavement than dirt, the Outback offers better ground clearance than the RAV4. Pricewise, the RAV4 has an advantage, as its starting price is $43,300 compared to the Subaru’s $44,385 base price.

Our Recommendation For Which Model You Should Buy

As is often the case, your best choice will depend upon the attributes you value most. If fuel economy is your main concern, none of the models here are going to beat the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD. On the other hand, the Subaru will be the best choice if soft-roading, as well as maximizing passenger and cargo capacity, are your main concerns. The Subaru also has the most rugged look of these three.

With all of that said, my priority in a car will always be responsiveness. I like to drive, and the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium will happily play along on twisty roads. The CX-50 also delivers a more upscale interior experience, which is another plus for me. Were I spending my own money—and had to choose from among these three—the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium would be the choice for me.
