There are some things we all simply have to accept in this life, and the fact that a new motorcycle will eventually depreciate is one of them. For years, Harley-Davidson motorcycles seemed to live by a different set of rules, with certain models holding their value for a lot longer than one might expect. Today, this is no longer the case.

While there are a couple of exceptions to this rule, pretty much every Harley is depreciating just as fast as any other motorcycle from another brand. The knock-on effect is that older bikes on the secondary market have also now become significantly less valuable, almost overnight. While this is far from ideal for those who already own these bikes and are looking to sell them, for those looking to buy a used Harley, there are some bargains to be had.

Buying a used motorcycle always has an element of risk attached, so please do your research, and proceed with caution. The motorcycles on this list go from oldest to newest.

10 Harleys With Real Performance Muscle

Harley-Davidson no longer builds bikes just for cruising. These 10 models prove performance is now part of the brand’s DNA.

1995 Fat Boy

Price Range: $3,000 – $5,000

The 90s era Fat Boy is something of a cultural icon. Its brief cameo in Terminator 2 certainly played a part in this, but there is no denying the fact that the bike has some serious presence. Unfortunately, it does not have much in the way of bite to back up all its bark. With its old EVO motor only making around 66 horsepower, this 700-pound behemoth is, in a word, slow. There are aftermarket solutions to this problem, but the law of diminishing returns will apply, with some of these “solutions” costing more than the bike itself.

1998 Dyna Super Glide

Price Range: $2,000 – $4,000

When looking at any Dyna from this era, it is important to address the elephant in the room. The “Dyna death wobble” is not just some made-up fable, it is a legitimate concern. These bikes were not meant to be ridden fast, and their frames are fairly rudimentary by modern standards. So, if you hit a bump at speed, or mid-corner, it will destabilize the chassis and cause a pretty scary speed wobble. Choosing a Dyna is a commitment to a more relaxed way of riding.

1998 Road Glide

Price Range: $4,000 – $6,000

Depending on the condition of the vehicle, prices for the pre-2000 Harley Road Glide will vary. The price range above will be for a bike in good running condition, and that is about as far as it goes. The same old faithful EVO sits at the heart of this bike, so while it will happily get you across the country in comfort, it certainly will not get you across the country in any great hurry. Unlike most of the bikes on this list that will mostly just appeal to fans of the brand, this will appeal to anyone looking for a budget-friendly touring bike.

1999 Electra Glide Classic

Price Range: $4,000 – $6,000

For around the same price as the aforementioned Road Glide, you can also find an Electra Glide Classic. It will most certainly appeal to those who prefer more traditional cruiser styling, and it also comes equipped with the newer, sometimes fuel-injected Twincam 88. Although the Twincam was a step in the right direction, it was a relatively small step in terms of performance, and with the added weight, it won’t feel any more sprightly than the Road Glide.

1999 Road King Classic

Price Range: $5,000 – $7,000

Harley-Davidson

While the Electra Glide does look a little dated, the Road King has more or less the same design as the modern equivalent. Naturally, the new bike has almost twice as much power and is a different, more expensive animal. With the same Twincam 88 engine on a slightly lighter frame, it will at least feel marginally quicker off the mark.

2002 VRSCA V-Rod

Price Range: $4,000 – $6,000

Bring a Trailer

Harley knew that a new, more modern flagship needed to be developed for the 21st century after well over a decade of stagnation. The V-Rod was supposed to be that bike, but it was met with a rather lukewarm response. It failed to win over old air-cooled fans, and didn’t exactly succeed in bringing in new buyers either. Today, it is just a fun, fast Harley that is cheaper than many fun, slow Harleys.

2012 Iron 883

Price Range $4,000 – $6,000

Harley-Davidson

While an older V-Rod might be a bargain for the right buyer, a newer Sportster is an altogether more manageable entry point into the world of Harley-Davidson. These bikes offer an authentic air-cooled V-twin riding experience, come with a built-in community, and an extensive aftermarket. Parts will never be an issue, and if you are into motorcycle customization, this is a great option.

2017 Street 750

Price Range: $3,000 – $5,000

Harley-Davidsn

Much was expected of the Street 750 back when it first came out. Along with the 500, these were the first genuinely accessible Harleys in a very long time. Unfortunately, the build quality was not up to the usually high standards of the brand, and many riders were left disappointed by the overall riding experience. Today, at this price, these bikes offer pretty good value to those willing to have an open mind about what to expect from a bike that isn’t much like any of the other Harleys from this era. Or any era, really.

2021 Pan America

Price Range: $9,000 – $11,000

Harley-Davidson

The Pan-America represents the single boldest move Harley has ever made. Building an ADV was a leap into the unknown, and it initially paid off as the model sold like literal hotcakes in its first year of production. This proved to be a double-edged sword, as it inevitably had a few teething issues, and it left several customers disappointed. By now, these issues have all been fixed under warranty. At this price point, the original base model Pan-America is now a bargain.

Bonus: Any Custom Chopper

Price range: $1,000 – $3,000

Currently, it is fair to say choppers are not exactly the most sought-after motorcycles. Even at the best of times, these bikes are all personalized to such an extent that they usually represent the character of the person who built the thing, and don’t hold all that much in the way of value. For those looking for a project bike, this is by far the most affordable Harley-powered option.
