Volkswagen debuts further advances for its comprehensive IQ.DRIVE® Advanced Driver Assistance System

Reston, VA — With IQ.DRIVE®, Volkswagen has one of the most comprehensive standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) available in the U.S. on mass-market vehicles. Every vehicle in the lineup has the following features: Travel Assist, Front Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist.

Volkswagen is introducing several advancements for some of its existing standard driver assistance systems across its range of 2027 vehicles based on the MQB Evo and MEB platforms—the Atlas family, Golf family, ID. Buzz, and Tiguan. Upgrades include driver-initiated lane changing in the Travel Assist feature on more models, the ability to move the vehicle off the roadway with the Emergency Assist Plus feature, and an upgraded Predictive ACC feature. Certain vehicles also receive a new Rearview Camera System that can detect pedestrians, and the ID. Buzz adds road data that helps improve the vehicle’s ADAS as part of the In-Vehicle Premium subscription service.

These improvements to the existing features reflect our ongoing commitment to helping drivers navigate the road with greater confidence through continuous innovation.’

With Travel Assist’s assisted lane changing feature, drivers can initiate lane changes by using the turn signal when the feature is engaged and your road speed is greater than 45 mph. By pressing the signal partially upward or downward, the driver will see the left or right turn signal blink three times in the Digital Cockpit ahead. The feature uses the rear radar sensors to detect whether there is adjacent traffic in your lane and will initiate a lane change to either the left or right when it is safe to do so.

An on-hold wait-to-clear function will pause the lane change for up to 12 seconds until traffic clears and it is safe to switch lanes. The on-hold function is indicated in the Digital Cockpit by either a white flashing arrow in the ID. Buzz or by a green flashing arrow and a red hash—indicating that the desired lane is blocked by another vehicle—for Atlas family, Golf family, and Tiguan vehicles. When the lane change starts, a green arrow animation will appear in the Digital Cockpit on all these vehicles.

Emergency Assist Plus improves upon the Emergency Assist feature with the ability to guide the vehicle to the side of the road if it senses a medical emergency. Lane Assist or Travel Assist must be activated for the system to work. With Lane Assist, it is triggered if the vehicle detects multiple lane departure events in a row without driver intervention. With Travel Assist, it is activated if the car doesn’t detect any steering wheel inputs by the driver for 25 seconds.

When triggered in Lane Assist, Emergency Assist Plus provides visual and audible warnings to the driver before the vehicle starts to make its way to the side of the road. When Emergency Assist Plus is activated in Travel Assist, the horn will honk, the brakes will be jerked three times to try to alert the driver, and the seatbelt will tighten (pre-tension). Whether Travel Assist or Lane Assist is used to enable Emergency Assist Plus, the vehicle will then make its way to the shoulder, providing the front-facing camera determines there is enough room for the car If adequate space is not detected, the vehicle will move the farthest right lane.

To warn surrounding traffic that Emergency Assist Plus is in action, the brake lights will indicate the car is slowing down, the turn signal engages to indicate the direction while the car is changing lanes, and the hazards will be activated. Once the vehicle is on the shoulder or in the farthest right lane, the vehicle shifts to ‘Park’, with hazards flashing and horn honking. The doors are unlocked and the lights turned on, and the emergency call function is activated.

A new Rearview Camera System—standard on certain trims for the 2027 Atlas, ID. Buzz, and Tiguan—uses an enhanced rearview camera that can now detect pedestrians that are behind the vehicle. If the camera detects a pedestrian while the vehicle is traveling in reverse at speeds between 1 and 6 mph, the system helps to mitigate potential collisions by automatically applying the brakes.

Updates to the Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control (pACC) feature for 2027 help provide a more comfortable and confident ACC driving experience. The pACC feature now enables earlier adoption of increased speed limits through driver accelerator input following system notification, reducing delays from traffic sign recognition. It also extends ACC to ramps, enabling exit deceleration and guidance via navigation or turn-signal input. Prior to an automatic speed adjustment, a popup will appear in the Digital Cockpit to allow drivers to accept or reject the change. An increased speed can be accepted by tapping the accelerator; to reject a speed change, push the Res button on steering wheel.

For the 2027 ID. Buzz, Road Experience Management (REM) data will be part of an In-Vehicle Premium subscription service. REM data is cloud-based and gathers data from real world road users, garnering camera data on things like lane markings, signage, and street lighting to improve map quality that in turn helps to assist the vehicle’s ADAS.

For instance, if you don’t have highly visible lane lines on a road, the map data is able to keep you centered in the lane without relying 100% on the vehicle’s onboard camera visuals. From the perspective of vehicle speed, the vehicle can use swarm data from the surrounding traffic to base your vehicle’s speed on the traffic around you, up to the posted speed limit on that road. A one-year trial of In-Vehicle Premium is included on the 2027 ID. Buzz, and also includes Premium Navigation and Speech , AirConsole® in-vehicle gaming, What3Words® navigation functionality, and a Wi-Fi Hotspot that enables access to the Volkswagen App Store.
