Keeping an SUV for 250,000 miles requires more than an engine that still starts every morning. It also has to avoid transmission failure, turbocharger replacement, electronic malfunction, or structural problems that would make an aging vehicle too expensive to repair. That is where one old-school SUV separates itself from the crowd. Its completely outdated powertrain seems like a disadvantage on a test drive, but it becomes much more appealing when the odometer passes 150,000 miles, and the repair bills remain manageable.

Modern SUVs can include turbochargers, high-pressure fuel systems, eight or 10-speed transmissions, active suspension components, and heavily integrated electronics. None of these features automatically makes an SUV unreliable, but each adds another potentially expensive failure point to the ownership equation. The old adage that “the more moving parts something has, the more opportunities there are for things to break” is certainly true for vehicles.

According to the 2025 iSeeCars Longest-Lasting Cars Study, the average vehicle has only a 4.8-percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles. The study analyzed nearly 400 million vehicles, making the models at the top even more impressive and certainly not one-off, isolated success stories.

Simpler Does Not Always Mean Better—But Proven Hardware Matters

An old engine is not necessarily a good engine, and a transmission with fewer gears is not automatically more durable. Simplicity becomes meaningful when it is paired with a long production history, widespread parts availability, and millions of real-world miles.

One such SUV benefits from all three. Its powertrain remained largely unchanged for 15 model years, giving mechanics time to understand it and the automaker time to refine it. That long production run also means parts are readily available, and most experienced independent shops have already worked on the engine, transmission, and 4WD system.

The fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner, which spanned from the 2010 to 2024 model years, fits this description. It does not merely carry a strong reputation for reliability; it has the mileage data to back it up.

The 4Runner has a 32.9-percent predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, according to the latest dedicated iSeeCars quarter-million-mile study. That makes it 6.8 times more likely than the average vehicle to reach that milestone. It finished second overall, trailing only the Toyota Sequoia at 39.1 percent. Current iSeeCars reliability data also gives the 4Runner a 48.5-percent chance of reaching 200,000 miles and estimates its average lifespan at 197,282 miles, or approximately 14.3 years.

Toyota Spent 15 Model Years Refining The Same Basic Formula

The fifth-generation 4Runner arrived for the 2010 model year and remained in production through 2024. During that time, Toyota added new styling, updated infotainment systems, more safety technology, and a seemingly endless collection of off-road trims and special editions.

What Toyota did not do was continuously reinvent the powertrain. Every 2024 4Runner still uses a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 producing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It is connected to a five-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Those figures looked increasingly dated as rivals adopted turbocharged engines and transmissions with more gears, but Toyota’s unwillingness to make major changes became part of the 4Runner’s long-term appeal.

The Old-School Powertrain Eliminates Several Expensive Components

The 4Runner’s 1GR-FE V6 does not use turbochargers, intercoolers, boost-control systems, or any other hardware associated with forced induction. This immediately means fewer failure points compared to turbocharged rivals. Despite Toyota’s success with hybrid powertrains, the fifth-generation 4Runner was never offered with a hybrid option.

That does not make the engine indestructible, but it eliminates several components that could require attention later in the vehicle’s life. The engine family also dates to the early 2000s and has appeared in multiple Toyota and Lexus models, including the Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, and Lexus GX.

Fuel economy is a forgotten aspect of driving with the previous-generation 4Runner. Rated at 16 city/19 highway mpg, it barely keeps up with some pickup trucks and is not meant for any driver looking to save money on fuel. This translates to an average annual fuel cost of $3,600, which is higher than that of the 2024 Tundra, with its 20 city/24 highway mpg and annual fuel cost of $2,800.

That is the price of the 4Runner’s old-school approach. Its powertrain avoids some expensive mechanical complexity, but it replaces that potential repair cost with a guaranteed appetite for fuel.

RepairPal estimates that a Toyota 4Runner costs an average of $514 per year to maintain and repair. That is lower than the $573 midsize-SUV average and the $652 average across all vehicles.

Owners make an average of 0.4 unscheduled visits to the repair shop per year. The probability of a repair being classified as severe is 13 percent, which is roughly average for the segment. These are not flawless numbers, but they show that the 4Runner’s rugged body-on-frame construction does not automatically translate to unusually high repair spending.

The real advantage appears over time. Modest annual costs make it easier to justify routine maintenance instead of abandoning the SUV after a large repair estimate.

Strong Resale Value Makes The Initial Price Harder To Swallow

The problem is getting one cheaply. Used 4Runners hold their value extremely well because buyers already know about their durability. Current iSeeCars data gives the model an 8.9-out-of-10 value-retention score, while one- to five-year-old examples range from approximately $31,990 to $55,401. Similarly, the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price of a 2021 Toyota 4Runner ranges from $31,000 for the base SR5 model to $42,700 for the TRD Pro.

That means a used 4Runner can cost considerably more than a similarly aged crossover with comparable mileage. The strong resale value protects current owners, but it also encourages some sellers to treat every high-mileage example like a collector vehicle.

A mechanically healthy engine and transmission cannot compensate for a structurally compromised frame.

A pre-purchase inspection should cover the frame rails, crossmembers, suspension mounting points, brake lines, fuel lines, and skid-plate mounts. Southwestern vehicles are generally less vulnerable to severe corrosion, but sun damage, dried seals, and neglected fluids can create their own problems.

You should also engage 4HI, 4LO, Crawl Control, and the locking differential, if equipped. A 4WD system that has not been used for years can develop seized actuators or other problems that remain hidden during an ordinary on-road test drive.

The Sixth-Generation 4Runner Has To Establish Its Own Record

The redesigned sixth-generation 4Runner should not be labeled unreliable simply because it uses newer technology. Its standard 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder produces 278 horsepower, while the available hybrid produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Both offer more performance and better efficiency than the old V6.

However, the sixth generation has not been around long enough to build a comparable 200,000 or 250,000-mile record. Even iSeeCars currently lists the new generation as having insufficient longevity data. The reliability reputation belongs to the fifth-generation model until the new powertrains prove themselves over time.

Fifth-generation buyers should also check the VIN for outstanding recalls. Certain 2014–2015 and 2018–2019 4Runners were included in Toyota’s Denso low-pressure fuel-pump recall. The defective pump could cause rough running, stalling, or a failure to restart, but Toyota’s recall remedy replaces the affected component at no charge.

The fifth-generation 4Runner is slow, thirsty, dated inside, and often frustratingly expensive on the used market. None of those criticisms changes what it does well. Find one with a clean frame, documented maintenance, a functioning 4WD system, and completed recalls, and you get an SUV with one of the strongest quarter-million-mile records available. The 4Runner quietly avoids expensive problems because Toyota spent 15 years resisting the urge to complicate something that had already worked.
