The Korean Luxury SUV That Beats The BMW X3 On Price, Power, And Warranty

Besides the midsize and large SUV segments, the compact luxury SUV segment might be just as hot if not hotter. You can get an equally luxurious experience for slightly less than what you would pay for a midsize or large luxury SUV. They’re also considerably quicker with a smaller powertrain, and have a lower center of gravity, which improves performance capability, among other differences. The only major difference is the towing capacity, even though most compact luxury SUVs can tow pretty substantially.

Is The Badge Worth It?

It used to be the case that base models, German cars or not, were not well-outfitted with features. They listened to their audience in this regard and now include a handsome number of standard luxury features. The difference now is the way they are designed inside and out.

The GV70 Starts $2,170 Cheaper With The Same Standard Features

Pricing might be the most important gap between these two. As of the writing of this article, the 2026 Genesis GV70 has a starting MSRP of $50,480. Meanwhile, the BMW X3 starts at a cool $52,650. That’s not the biggest gap on the planet, but it’s still worth mulling over. It’s worth noting because the same features that are standard on both cost a few thousand dollars less on the GV70. But the price gap is just the opening act — the engine specs tell an even more surprising story.

It’s interesting that performance is considered the primary justification for buying German luxury cars. It’s interesting because, if you look at the numbers, the Genesis GV70 ends up outshining the BMW X3 in just about every specification number on the sheet. They’re both powered by a four-cylinder engine. The only difference is that the GV70 cranks out significantly more power.

The GV70’s Turbo Leaves The BMW X3 In The Dust

Both are turbocharged, both have two-ish liters, and both have an all-wheel drive drivetrain. The Genesis, on the other hand, has about 0.5 liters more displacement compared to BMW’s 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder. The Genesis GV70 2.5T is an inline four-cylinder engine that outputs a cool 300 horsepower at 5,800 RPM.

The BMW X3’s engine is a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged mild-hybrid engine that outputs 255 horsepower, 45 fewer than the GV70. Torque numbers are similarly lopsided, as the GV70 puts out 311 pound-feet versus the X3’s 295 pound-feet. It shows up in the zero to 60 numbers too. The Genesis can achieve zero to 60 MPH in the mid-four seconds while the BMW takes between five and six seconds.

Both Earn Top Safety Ratings, But Genesis Edges Out The NHTSA Score

Zero to 60 times aside, there are some other categories the GV70 smokes the BMW X3 with. NHTSA, for example, gave the Korean automaker a perfect 5.0/5.0 for overall crash safety ratings. The much longer-standing German competitor BMW scored 4.9/5. Sure, not that big of a difference, but it’s not nothing. They actually do meet in the middle when it comes to specific scoring, as they both won IIHS’ Top Safety Pick Plus award for their current generations. Safety is a wash — but what about the years of ownership after you drive off the lot?

Warranty Battles That Actually Aren’t One

Long-term ownership of German-made luxury vehicles is always a tricky situation. They can seem reasonably priced upfront, but further down the road (pun intended) ownership costs could equal the vehicle’s depreciated value. To make matters worse, a lot of the three main German automakers don’t always have the most robust warranties.

The appearance and the overall interior materials may last, but the powertrain often does not. On the other hand, the Genesis GV70 has reasonably good initial quality, but has been known to have issues later on. Thankfully, they have a much more extensive powertrain coverage.

Long-Term Ownership

If we are specifically talking about warranties, then the Genesis GV70 has completely outpaced the X3. BMW only offers a four-year 50,000-mile powertrain warranty. Genesis offers a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty that can be found across all of their models. Genesis also offers a five-year, 60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, as opposed to BMW’s four-year, 50,000-mile warranty.

The BMW X3 scored 78 out of 100 for the 2026 model from JD Power. The Genesis GV 70 didn’t score much better, with a 76 out of 100. However, when it came to reliability and quality, JD Power awarded the Genesis a higher score of 81 out of 100, compared to the BMW’s 74.

Depreciation Values

The next set of numbers may surprise you. It used to be that Genesis vehicles didn’t really hold their value, but that is no longer the case. According to iSeeCars, the GV70 loses 52.1 percent of its value in the first five years, as opposed to the BMW X3 losing 54.2 percent over the same duration. Even though the Genesis GV70 costs less, it ends up holding more value. Because the Genesis GV70 offers a much more extensive warranty coverage program, after people turn in their leases, these vehicles are more likely to be purchased as certified pre-owned.

What Really Is Modern Luxury Anyway?

Luxury used to really mean something. It had features and options that were unobtainable and out of reach from a price perspective. Features like adaptive cruise control used to be a luxury-only option but are now standard on most new vehicles and are viewed as more of a safety feature than a luxury. There was a time that heated seats were looked at as a luxury, but can now be had on most mid-tier standard vehicles.

Even floor mats with logo protectors that used to seem like a luxury feature can now be found on vehicles like the Kia Telluride. Point being, the bar keeps being moved. The real hallmark of luxury is attention to detail, fun and precise driving capability, and supple materials.

Premium Materials And Real Buttons

Genesis does an incredibly good job of having an attention to detail in its interiors. All of their touchpoints, whether it be the windshield wiper stalk or the area where you place your finger to open the window, feel expensive. The BMW X3 has not only been highly criticized for its exterior, but it has also been criticized for its sparingly designed interior.

Plastic materials are plenty, and the door panels seem gaudy and intrusive. Credit where it’s due, the materials are supple on the seats and the center console is nice, but the materials on the door panels are hard to stomach. Additionally, the Genesis GV70 has real tactile HVAC controls as well as a dashboard-sweeping 27-inch OLED display. The BMW has a similar sized display, but no physical buttons to be had except for the volume controller.

Heritage Isn’t Everything

At the end of the day, there are pluses and minuses to every vehicle. While the Genesis GV70 does end up having more power than the BMW in a straight line, the BMW is known for being much more capable around corners. The Genesis GV70 wins on pricing and resale, and some would even say interior quality. Maybe you’re a fan of the ultra-modern BMW exterior and interior. Maybe you’re more drawn to the classical styling with the same new features in the Genesis. Either way, the Genesis GV70 ends up making more sense from a numbers standpoint.
