How many miles of range do you need? For everyone, the answer would be different. Some drivers may be satisfied with nothing more than 150 miles, while others will demand at least 250 miles. But as you spend more money and go for bigger cars, that range can go up to 300 or even 350 miles. For most drivers, that’s the sweet spot.

Still, there are a few electric vehicles out there that can go even further, breaching the 400-mile mark. This kind of all-electric range is more than enough for most drivers, but a select few drivers need this. For the latter group, this range not only prevents range anxiety and saves time but also makes road trips and long commutes easy. And no EV SUV does it better than this one.

An Average EV SUV Only Goes 300 To 350 Miles

The average EPA-estimated range for an electric SUV in the U.S. falls roughly between 250 and 350 miles on a single charge. Here, most popular electric crossovers sit at the lower end of the range, between 250 and 320 miles, while full-size SUVs benefit from larger batteries that give them a range of 300 to 350 miles. This range is considered plenty by most buyers, especially when you consider that an average one-way commute is just 11 to 15 miles. Over 300 miles of range is enough to take you to work and back, and also accompany you on your daily chores.

Where you’ll quickly find 300 miles lacking is when you want to go on long road trips or have a longer commute. In that case, 300 miles can still cause range anxiety, which is only made worse on road trips. Moreover, finding a charging station or waiting for the car to charge can eat up a lot of precious time that could be spent munching miles on the highway. For such instances, you need an SUV that offers a longer range of at least 400 miles.

There are a few EV SUVs that actually offer that kind of range today, though you’ll have to spend big money on it. But spend that kind of money, and you not only get a long range but a properly luxurious experience. The SUV in question here is one such EV, offering the best electric range of any EV SUV on the market. It combines that long range with a commanding road presence, opulent interiors, and a laundry list of creature comforts and tech features. The SUV in question is the 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ.

Cadillac sits at the upper end of the industry when it comes to luxury and opulent interiors, with an unmistakably classy design that commands attention. Nothing represents that quality better than the Escalade, a full-size SUV that has become synonymous with luxury, power, and prestige. In 2023, Cadillac decided to give the Escalade a full EV treatment, launching the Escalade IQ, which combines the standard Escalade’s space and luxury with a high-tech EV platform.

The result is a full-size BEV SUV that offers a serious range of up to 460 miles. This puts the Escalade IQ at the very top of the SUV segment, with the likes of the Lucid Gravity trailing closely behind. We’ll get to the rivals later, but thanks to this long range, the Escalade IQ offers the best solution to range anxiety. With 460 miles of range, plenty of performance, and quick charging time, the Escalade IQ is the SUV to get if you don’t want to deal with frequent charging and range anxiety.

You Have GM’s Ultium Electric Drivetrain Technology To Thank For

The Cadillac Escalade IQ offers that kind of range thanks to GM’s Ultium electric drivetrain technology. This system features a 24-module Ultium battery that supplies power to one or two Ultium drive motors, depending on the application. These 24 modules can be configured horizontally or vertically, depending on the vehicle’s design. Typically, though, the modules are located under the floor between the front and rear axles, which also helps keep the vehicle’s center of gravity low.

Since this system is modular, GM uses it on three major models, with the Cadillac IQ being one of them. The other two are the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV. On the Escalade IQ, this system uses dual-motor all-wheel drive, producing heaps of power to move this big SUV. In standard drive mode, the Escalade IQ produces 680 horsepower, which is bumped up to 750 horsepower with the Velocity Max mode. The latter allows the 9,100-pound Escalade IQ to shoot from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.7 seconds, which is quite respectable considering the SUV’s size.

No Replacement For Battery Displacement

Like many electric vehicles on the market, the hefty Escalade IQ gains a majority of its heft from the large battery, which lives under the floorboards. Thanks to the sheer size of the Escalade IQ, that battery gets to be among the largest available in any production passenger BEV. As a result, the large battery pack trades in efficiency for massive range and practicality. So, there’s really no secret to the Escalade IQ’s road trip-esque range; the SUV just uses a massive battery.

Just how big is it? The Escalade IQ’s battery offers 205 kilowatt-hours of usable power, which is significantly more than any of its competitors. The Escalade IQ’s closest rival, the Lucid Gravity, only uses a 123-kilowatt-hour battery, which gives it a range of 450 miles. In a way, GM’s full-size trucks and SUVs’ success boils down to their big-capacity battery, which doesn’t have to worry about efficiency. Think of it as a battery equivalent of the ol’ adage, “There’s no replacement for displacement.”

Advanced Thermal Management Mitigates Range Loss

The Cadillac Escalade IQ also uses advanced thermal management to heat or cool the battery, thereby keeping the cells at optimal temperatures. This system comes in handy by minimizing range loss during extreme heat or cold, letting the SUV go the distance without losing miles to the weather. This same system is also used in the Hummer EV and Silverado EV.

Advanced NMCA Cell Chemistry Offers High Energy Density

To get a bit technical, GM’s 24-module Ultium battery uses advanced nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NMCA) cell chemistry. This formula offers high energy density and longevity to the battery, so the Escalade IQ can keep going the distance for years to come. At the same time, by reducing cobalt content by 70 percent compared to older battery designs, this formula helps GM cut costs and mitigate some of the serious ethical concerns associated with cobalt mining.

Over 100 Miles With Just 10 Minutes Of Charging

The Ultium battery’s next advantage is its fast and efficient charging. The 800-volt system architecture can charge at up to 350 kilowatt-hour DC, which can add 100 to 117 miles in just ten minutes using public DC fast charging. On the other hand, with a Level 2 charger, this Cadillac can handle 19.2 kilowatt AC or roughly 26.5 miles of range per hour. Cadillac also says that the IQ can give some back, thanks to bidirectional charging capabilities.

Cadillac Escalade IQ vs. Lucid Gravity And Rivian R1S

Lucid

With so many EV SUVs on offer today, you’d think the Escalade IQ would have tough competition, but that’s hardly the case, thanks to its long range. The closest rival here is the Lucid Gravity Grand Touring, which offers up to 450-mile range from its smaller battery. It also offers more horsepower, along with a beautiful exterior, a posh interior, and plenty of tech features. Starting at $79,900 for the Touring model, the Lucid Gravity can be a great, relatively cheaper alternative to the Escalade IQ, though the price starts rising quickly as you climb up the trim ladder.

Rivian

The next best option after the Gravity, especially if you want something more rugged and adventure-ready, is the Rivian R1S. Equipped with the Max Pack, this SUV can go for 410 miles while producing 665 horsepower from its dual-motor setup. The SUV is also pretty off-road capable, as it gets 15 inches of ground clearance and adjustable air suspension. With a quad-motor setup, the R1S also features torque vectoring and up to 1,205 horsepower. This is the perfect EV SUV if you want something more rugged.

The Cadillac Escalade IQ Starts At $127,405

Starting at $127,405, the Escalade IQ is not a cheap SUV by any means. But it more than makes up for it with its expansive interior and a long list of features. For instance, the standard features include a heated steering wheel, heated front and second row seats, and ventilated front seats. Infotainment duties are taken care of by a massive 55-inch Horizon display that supports advanced connectivity and a 19-speaker AKG sound system. As you climb up the trim ladder, you can unlock a 38 or 42-speaker sound system, massaging front seats with power bolsters, and power-open and close doors.

Air Ride adaptive suspension and magnetic ride control, along with SkyGlass roof, active noise cancellation, and Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance tech keep things comfortable for both the driver and passengers. All of this is wrapped in a handsome Cadillac design, which also hides a massive battery. The result is a luxury EV SUV that can not only go well over 400 miles on a single charge but also keep you comfortable and entertained along the way. It’s the perfect EV road-tripper.
