For decades, American automotive culture was defined by a specific recipe: put a massive V8 in a midsize vehicle (intermediate) that could carry four to five adults in total comfort while laying rubber lines at every stoplight. Chrysler, in particular, was long celebrated for making cars like this with understated American luxury and an unmistakable highway presence. But with changes in the modern automotive landscape, it seems the classic American sedan has run its course. But before Chrysler pulled the plug on its four-door era, the automaker decided to give car enthusiasts an unforgettable parting gift that honored nearly seven decades of muscle-bound luxury.

The American Muscle Sedan Is Dead

The traditional American sedan has suffered a swift and decisive collapse. Over the past decade, automotive consumer preferences shifted dramatically toward crossovers and big SUVs. Naturally, domestic manufacturers began eliminating traditional four-door passenger cars from their assembly lines in favor of these money-making SUVs.

One by one, legendary nameplates met their demise. The Ford Taurus SHO was retired without a successor; Chevrolet quietly killed the SS sedan after a few years despite its purist appeal; and even Dodge eventually closed the chapter on the legendary Charger. The four-door performance sedan has shrunk to a handful of expensive European sport sedans. The traditional American muscle sedan formula—a large, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedan with a deep, naturally aspirated V8 burble—is already extinct.

The LX Platform Created a Formula No One Copied

Back in the early 2000s, before American muscle cars became a thing again, Chrysler had to be saved by the Europeans. The DaimlerChrysler merger allowed Chrysler to build a rear-wheel-drive sedan when domestic rivals were shifting their full-size cars to front-wheel-drive platforms. Chrysler developed the full-size, rear-wheel-drive LX platform. It used selected parts of the Mercedes-Benz rear suspension and steering components, and this provided the blueprint for the revival of a new range of powerful sedans.

It gave birth to a legendary family of vehicles: the muscular Dodge Charger, the iconic Dodge Challenger, the short-lived Dodge Magnum wagon, and the sophisticated Chrysler 300. Together, these vehicles proved that this full-size, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform architecture could deliver everyday practicality with crazy performance. The platform was so good that it allowed Chrysler to keep producing and improving on these cars for almost two decades. No other manufacturer achieved the cult-like following or long-term production legacy established by Chrysler’s LX platform.

Chrysler Had One Last Surprise Before The Curtain Fell

By the early 2020s, Chrysler’s vehicle lineup was reduced to a fraction of its former glory. As the whole industry pivoted toward crossovers and electrification, Chrysler only had one new vehicle since 2017 and had effectively become a minivan company overnight with the Pacifica. Everyone saw Chrysler’s demise from a mile away and assumed the aging 300 sedan would quietly fade away with a standard final model year.

Instead, Chrysler’s engineering team decided it needed a befitting send off. Before closing its chapter on sedans forever, it greenlit a low-volume, high-performance celebration of the 300 nameplate. It wasn’t designed to appeal to regular buyers, but to serve as a high-powered love letter to four-door performance purists.

The Final Chrysler 300C Went Out With A Bang

When Chrysler officially revealed the limited-run 2023 Chrysler 300C, the automotive community responded immediately. The plan was to make only 2,200 units with 2,000 units for the United States and 200 units for Canada. When the dedicated reservation page went live on September 13, 2022, every last one sold out in under 12 hours. This was no mistake: buyers recognized Chrysler had created the ultimate version of its legendary sedan, and they wanted a piece.

Even after slots were filled, Chrysler created a waitlist for other buyers to sign up in case someone happened to cancel their pre-order. The exterior looked exactly like a standard 300C but with subtle changes like the tri-color 300C badges, dark chrome accents, and red Brembo brake calipers. They were available in three colors: Bright White, Gloss Black, and Velvet Red. But underneath the hood was a pleasant surprise.

Chrysler took the biggest naturally aspirated engine in its lineup, which was the 392 cubic-inch (6.4-liter) SRT HEMI V8, and squeezed it directly into the 300C’s engine bay. This was not the first time the Chrysler 300 received this engine; it was previously reserved for the Chrysler 300 SRT8, where it made 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, but this version made a little more.

This massive powerplant was pushing 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque straight to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Without any forced induction, massive blowers, or electric assistance, Chrysler claimed the 300C could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds and clear the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds. Car and Driver managed a time of 4.3 seconds and hit the quarter mile in 12.8 seconds on all-season tires, which is highly impressive. It possessed the raw power of a track-focused muscle car wrapped inside a luxury car.

It Was More Dodge Than Chrysler And That’s Exactly Why People Loved It

While the badge on the grille said Chrysler, the 2023 300C was pure Dodge performance. This is the perfect sedan for those who want a vehicle capable of taking to corporate meetings but that can still shred tires on demand and execute aggressive slides. It also wasn’t subtle about what was under the hood. Independent tests show that at wide open throttle, the 300C recorded 88 decibels which was louder than a Lamborghini Urus Performante.

To handle the immense power of the 392 HEMI, Chrysler fitted the vehicle with some mechanical upgrades borrowed directly from the SRT performance division. It has a high-performance adaptive suspension to help reduce body roll, four-piston Brembo brakes for more stopping power, a 3.09 mechanical LSD to ensure effective power delivery out of corners, and a dual-mode active exhaust setup that barks aggressively under throttle and goes quiet when cruising. The result was a dual-personality vehicle that possessed the tire-shredding attitude of a Scat Pack Challenger but also had the road manners of a luxury sedan.

It Was Still A Comfortable Luxury Cruiser

Step inside the Chrysler 300C and you are treated to premium luxury features. The interior is wrapped in premium Black Laguna leather seats accented with silver stitching and embossed 300C logos. Carbon fiber trim accents adorned the center console and dashboard, while a 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system provided quality sound when the driver wanted to relax. It also had heated and ventilated front seats, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system that made the car an effortless cross-country highway cruiser. It could easily sit five passengers and still had a spacious trunk, which is all you really need in a true luxury muscle sedan.

The Final Hemi Sleeper Marked The End Of An Entire Era

The release of the 2023 Chrysler 300C signaled far more than the conclusion of a single model; it marked the definitive end of the entire LX platform lineage. For nearly two decades, this platform served as the backbone of American rear-wheel-drive V8 performance. With the retirement of the 300C alongside its Dodge Charger and Challenger siblings, an entire era of affordable American muscle came to a close. It originally had an MSRP of $55,000, and this limited 300C is already considered a future classic. Some low-mileage 300C examples have already come up for sale and have consistently sold close to their original MSRP on Bring a Trailer. These values are holding firmly as buyers realize no more will ever be built.

This May Be The Last Old-School American Luxury Muscle Sedan

It is true that modern luxury performance sedans still exist in the market. Vehicles like the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing continue to push performance boundaries with a supercharged V8 and a manual transmission. However, the Cadillac exists in a rare, hyper-exclusive six-figure price tier and relies on forced induction to achieve its performance. Its price tag is already out of reach for the average American.

The Chrysler 300C was the last old-school, naturally aspirated, big-displacement V8 luxury muscle sedan built for the American market. It didn’t need any supercharger, turbocharger, or hybrid setup to deliver its punch. As the automotive landscape transitions toward electric power and smaller turbocharged engines, enthusiasts increasingly recognize the 2023 Chrysler 300C as an irreplaceable milestone. It was a comfortable executive cruiser with the soul of a muscle car and a fitting final salute to the American muscle sedan lineage.
