A few lucky Ford buyers were threatened with a good time and probably loved it. Their rides came straight from the factory with a massive warning: they were dangerous race cars built in small numbers to satisfy homologation requirements. They got behind the wheel of the first street-legal racer that terrorized the streets. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, because something that insane would never get built today. At least it set the template for every modern track-special.

The 1963 Ford Galaxie Was Too Heavy

In the early 1960s, Ford had a racing problem to solve. The Ford Galaxie 427 was too heavy and bulky to dominate racetracks. It simply carried too much bulk for optimal acceleration and handling, and couldn’t outrun the Chevrolet Impala or Chrysler Max Wedge, suffering a severe power-to-weight ratio disadvantage on drag strips.

The Ford Galaxie tipped the scales at between 3,800 and 4,000 pounds, while the Chevy Impala Z11 lightweight special weighed in at 3,340 to 3,500 pounds, and the rare factory lightweight Chrysler Max Wedge weighed between 3,100 and 3,328 pounds. At first, Ford decided to strip the Galaxie to reduce its weight.

Steel hoods, fenders, and trunk lids were swapped for fiberglass, and heavy bumpers were replaced by aluminum. This did help the Galaxie become a more formidable competitor with a factory-rated 425 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. It could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 5.4 seconds, with a 12.6-second quarter-mile time at about 107 mph.

It also had a top speed of around 140 to 155 mph. But the full-size Galaxie was still too heavy and too slow to keep up. So, Ford decided to drop the 427 engine into a smaller, lighter body with more aggressive modifications to finally leave competitors in the dust and to help get through a sales slump.

To boost sales through the Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday philosophy, Ford created the lightweight Fairlane Thunderbolt by stuffing the massive 427 cubic-inch (7.0-liter) FE big-block V8 under the hood to deliver a factory-rated 425 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. However, dyno tests put its output closer to 500 to 600 hp.

The 427 engine is fed by a ram-air induction system that routes cold air from outside into the engine by replacing the inner beam headlights with mesh-covered wire screens. Plus, it features dual four-barrel Holley carburetors mounted on a high-rise aluminum intake manifold and a custom tubular ‘bundle of snakes’ header system to clear the tight shock towers.

This mid-size race car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.6 seconds and complete a quarter mile in about 11.6 seconds at around 128 mph with a top speed of 130 mph. During a test run, it achieved an 11.61-second pass at the Lions Drag Strip; then it went on to win the 1964 NHRA Super Stock Championship.

Ford knew that the car built for the purpose of drag strip racing was dangerous. So a special disclaimer plate was riveted inside the glove box to warn owners that the vehicle didn’t meet normal factory quality standards or normal passenger car requirements. It was a competitive car with specialized components built to achieve maximum weight reduction.

Here’s How The Thunderbolt Got Lighter

​The 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt weighs in at 3,202 pounds to meet the NHRA minimum weight requirement of 3,200 pounds for the 427 cubic-inch engine class. This weight includes the car filled with fluids, fuel, and a driver. It was built to challenge the Impala Z-11 and its 427ci V8 while rumors about a new HEMI engine surrounded Chrysler and Mopar models.

To reduce the car’s weight, Ford replaced the hood, front bumper, and front fenders with lightweight fiberglass. Plus, the side and rear windows made of heavier, conventional glass were replaced with lightweight plexiglass. Then select inner front fender structures and other components were replaced by aluminum parts.

Every nonessential item that could be removed was eliminated. That means that these cars didn’t have a radio, heater, or spare tire. The passenger wipers, window cranks, factory sound-deadening materials, seam sealers, armrests, and carpeting were omitted. Worth noting, this was also before airbags were introduced in 1967.

The interior was fitted with lightweight, basic bucket seats sourced from Ford Econoline (E-100) vans or police packages, along with rubber mats. To get the cars ready for race day, the passenger seat could be unbolted and removed. At least the driver’s side of the car included a sun visor and windshield wiper.

But The Fairlane Thunderbolt Didn’t Last Long

The Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt was an experiment designed for drag strip racing, not the public. Only about 100 models were made to satisfy NHRA homologation requirements. Some sources claim between 111 and 127 units were made. About 51 cars had the automatic transmission, and the other 49 were equipped with four-speed manuals.

On top of not being made for the public, the cars were expensive and complicated to build. Ford lost a staggering $2,000 on each unit, and the cars originally cost between $3,780 and $3,980, making them extremely expensive in 1964. Once the Fairlane 427 completed its experimental goal, Ford didn’t exactly have a reason to keep it around.

The NHRA later updated its production rules to require 500 models to be built for the public. As a result, it became too expensive to hand-build Super Stock competition cars. Plus, the Ford racing strategy shifted to the newly available Ford Mustang and more affordable redesigned Ford Falcon platforms.

Now the Fairlane Thunderbolt is remembered for inspiring modern track-specials like the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 and Mustang Shelby GT500. These models borrow the same engineering philosophy of taking a standard production car and stripping out its weight while putting the largest, most powerful engine possible under the hood.
