Power might not always be at the top of your list of requirements when it comes to buying a new car. But, it is definitely something to think about if you want a car with fantastic performance. So, we’ve gathered a list of the most powerful new cars you can buy in every major category right now. From mid-sized sleeper cars to SUVs with crazy power to the most visceral hypercars, this list has perhaps some of the widest variety you could think of. It’s also got a decent balance of cars that use ICE power and cars that have embraced fully-electric performance.

The least powerful of the cars on this list are a mid-sized pair that share a platform. The Kia K5 GT and Hyundai Sonata N-Line are both massively underrated sleeper sedans, producing 290 horsepower from the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 they both share. That gives them a 0-60 time of anywhere between 5 and 5.4 seconds. While that might not look all that impressive on paper, it is genuinely something to shout about when you consider that these cars are both front-wheel drive. High-powered front-wheel-drive cars are more common now than they used to be, but there are still engineering challenges involved. Both of these cars not only being powerful, but also driveable, is a serious achievement from the two Korean brands.

These cars may look fairly dull. Enthusiasts may also not be too keen on the fact that they’re both front-wheel drive. But, get one of these, and you’ve got a seriously fantastic performance sedan on your hands. Whether you choose the Kia or the Hyundai, you won’t be disappointed.

The Audi RS3 has been a king of sporty compact models for a long time now. That’s not changed at all with the current version. It brought the inline-5 back in a big way, delivering 394 horsepower to all four wheels through Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. That gives it a 0-62 mph time of 3.8 seconds, enough to get close to some of the more powerful cars on this list.

If you want something that’s a bit more like an old-school European sporty compact, the Audi RS3 really might be the best way to go. While it only comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, it does have that distinctive 5-cylinder roar that you barely ever hear now. Plus, it is the single most powerful compact you can buy in America right now, after all.

The first of two Porsche SUVs on this list, the Macan Turbo Electric is the most powerful compact SUV you can get anywhere in America. It may not be particularly impressive compared to many of the other cars we’re going to cover here, but its total output is still 630 horsepower. But, that 630 horsepower gets you a lot of performance. The 0-62 mph sprint takes as little as 3.3 seconds, and it can go on to a top speed of up to 162 mph.

A lot of people may not like the idea of an electric Porsche SUV. But, this one proves that you can have that proper Porsche feel and driving experience in a car of this type.

Many people would think that the Ford Mustang GTD or the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC is the most powerful muscle car on sale in America right now. Actually, they aren’t, because there’s something else that’s Mustang-based that’s got even more grunt. That’s the Shelby American Super Snake, a bold-looking and ludicrously powerful V8 muscle car that could legitimately take on the top end of sports cars and supercars.

The normally aspirated base model of the Shelby American Super Snake only produces 480 horsepower from a modified version of Ford’s venerable Coyote V8. But, go for the supercharged version, and you’re looking at 830+ horsepower. That’s a little more than the 815 horsepower of the Ford Mustang GTD, and significantly more than the 795 horsepower of the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC. Both of those cars need a bigger 5.2-liter supercharged V8 based on the older modular V8 architecture to achieve that power. So, that makes the Shelby American Super Snake’s 830+ horsepower from modifying the Coyote engine even more impressive.

The Lucid Gravity GT-S isn’t often talked about in the world of full-sized SUVs. That’s even though it’s the most powerful car in its class, and one of the fastest to boot. This 7-seater family hauler has a total of 1,070 horsepower from its dual-motor electric powertrain. This gives it a 0-60 mph time of just 3.1 seconds.

The Lucid Gravity GT-S might not have performance that’s as impressive as a Tesla Model X Plaid. But, it’s managed to outlast it! After 2026, this will pretty much become the premier option for anyone who wants a 7-seater full-sized SUV that can hold its own against a supercar in a drag race.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric is the second of the Porsche SUVs on this list, and the most powerful mid-sized SUV you can get in America right now. While it produces 845 horsepower in most situations, when launch control or the push-to-pass system is initiated it gives you an overboost of 1,139 horsepower. That’ll take it from 0-62 mph in just 2.5 seconds, making it one of the fastest-accelerating SUVs currently on the market.

Much like the Porsche Macan Turbo Electric we discussed earlier, there are plenty of enthusiasts who will balk at the fact that this car exists in any form at all. Its crazy power and performance is undeniable, though. Do a launch with launch control on or hit that push-to-pass button, and you’ll get an experience that can’t easily be matched in any other mid-sized SUV.

Lucid’s other 1,000+ horsepower model is perhaps even more impressive than the Gravity GT-S. The Lucid Air Sapphire can take the fight to cars like the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and the Tesla Model S Plaid, producing 1,234 horsepower from its tri-motor electric powertrain. This powertrain has made it the fastest American sedan ever, with a claimed 0-60 mph time of 1.89 seconds and a claimed top speed of 205 mph.

Now that the Tesla Model S Plaid is being discontinued after 2026, the Lucid Air Sapphire is almost in a class of its own by default. Its only real rival now is the Porsche, and that car is designed for a different kind of owner (in certain ways) than the Lucid is. It’s turning into a true unicorn, and that’s something we can only respect.

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X easily takes the top spot as the most powerful sports car you can get in America, as well as the most extreme Corvette ever made. Chevrolet took the screaming 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged flat-plane V8 from the Corvette ZR1 and dropped it into the hybrid system of the Corvette E-Ray. That ended up creating an absolute monster, with 1,250 horsepower and the E-Ray’s electrically-assisted all-wheel drive. The result of that is a car that can go from 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds, and could potentially beat the Corvette ZR1’s top speed of 233 mph.

There’s an argument to be made that the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X is really a supercar, or even a hypercar. But, like the higher-performance versions of the Porsche 911, it’s very much based on a sports car chassis. So, in many ways, it definitely is a sports car. It’s just a sports car that’s ludicrously powerful, and ludicrously fast.

There’s always been horsepower wars going on in the world of supercars and hypercars. That’s only got crazier with how engine technology has advanced and how electrification has made huge strides. It’s not uncommon to find cars in these sectors that tout figures of over 1,000 or even over 2,000 horsepower. So far, the undisputed horsepower king in America has to be the Hennessey Venom F5. In its standard form, this car has 1,817 horsepower. But, with the Evolution upgrades, it goes up to an insane 2,031 horsepower. That’s enough for theoretical top speeds of over 300 mph, if there’s enough space for it to have a clear run and the tires will last that long.

What’s even more remarkable about this car is that all this power and speed comes from a rear-wheel-drive, pure ICE powertrain. There’s no help from electric motors at all. This is such an old-school powertrain, in fact, that a couple of special builds have come with a traditional 6-speed manual transmission. Because of the massive power of the Venom F5’s powertrain, the two manual builds have become the most powerful production cars ever made with a manual transmission.
