Honda is giving its flagship adventure motorcycle family one of its most substantial updates in years. The Japanese bikemaker has introduced a new generation of its large-capacity adventure bikes for 2027, bringing increased engine displacement, a revised chassis and updated suspension technology. The changes extended beyond mechanical updates, with Honda introducing a new hardcore variant aimed at riders looking for greater off-road capability. The other big news is the introduction of a new radar-based rider assistance package that should substantially enhance Honda’s adventure motorcycle family making this more than a routine model-year update.
The highlight of Honda’s 2027 adventure motorcycle lineup is the updated CRF1150L Africa Twin, which replaces the CRF1100L. Its parallel-twin engine has grown from 1084cc to 1131cc, delivering 16% more peak power and nearly 7% more torque along with improved mid-range performance. The increase in displacement comes with revisions to the engine’s performance characteristics, giving the Africa Twin more usable power across different riding conditions.
The mechanical updates extend to a new frame and a lighter swingarm, along with revisions to the riding position and a lower center of gravity all coming together to make the motorcycle more precise and easy to ride. It now gets Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA) suspension as standard equipment across the range.
The 2027 Africa Twin also receives a new seven-inch touchscreen instrument console along with a more compact and intuitive switchgear layout. It also gets wireless smartphone connectivity and a Honda smart key, which is particularly beneficial for riders who spend long hours touring on their motorcycles.
The most significant introduction to the 2027 Africa Twin lineup is the new CRF1150L Africa Twin Enduro Sports, which Honda calls its most off-road focused Africa Twin yet. Its design takes inspiration from Honda’s rally motorcycles, with compact bodywork and a high-mounted front fender. The hardcore motorcycle also gets a more off-road focused riding position, a reprofiled seat, increased ground clearance, and longer suspension travel to enhance its off-road ability. Furthermore, it gets dedicated off-road riding modes to better traverse different terrains and riding conditions.
The other motorcycle in the new Africa Twin lineup, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports, brings in Honda Sensing Ride. It is a radar-based rider assistance package that adds 10 different functions and works alongside Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Additional features include Vehicle Hold Control and Electronically Controlled Combined ABS.
With its new 2027 flagship adventure tourer family consisting of the standard Africa Twin, Adventure Sports, and the new Enduro Sports, Honda is taking a more specialized approach. Rather than offering the same motorcycle with minor variations and passing them off as variants, the three models are designed to address different priorities, from everyday adventure riding, to long-distance touring, to the more demanding off-road enduro use. The larger engine and revised chassis are a common foundation, while the new electronics and Enduro hardware widen the Africa Twin family’s capabilities.
