Four frontier AI image models take on a professional human designer in a blind, public T-shirt design test inspired by Dark Helmet, Unplugged Performance’s record-setting Tesla Model S Plaid race car. Customers decide the winner with their purchases, and Unplugged Performance will publish the full rankings when voting closes on August 24th, 2026.

HAWTHORNE, Calif. — Can artificial intelligence (AI) design a T-shirt people prefer over a human designer’s work? Unplugged Performance, the leading Tesla aftermarket performance brands, is putting the question to a public test. The company commissioned five T-shirt designs of its Dark Helmet Tesla Model S Plaid race car (four generated by frontier AI image models from OpenAI, xAI, ByteDance and Google, and one created by a professional human designer), and customers are picking the winner without knowing which design came from which source.

The campaign, titled Human Designer vs. 4 AI Designers, brings together four AI-generated T-shirt designs and one human-designed entry, all built from the same creative brief and the same subject: Dark Helmet, Unplugged Performance’s Tesla Model S Plaid race car. The winner is determined by which shirt Unplugged Performance customers worldwide select most often between July 22, 2026 and August 24, 2026. Designer identities are hidden from voters for the duration of the campaign. When voting closes, Unplugged Performance will publish the complete rankings from most to least popular, along with the number of selections each design received. Results will also be reported by segment rather than as a single tally: selections by customers redeeming a free shirt, direct purchases and non-binding public votes on X will be reported separately, so readers can judge the sample for themselves.

Four AI image generation tools produced the AI entries: OpenAI’s GPT Images 2.0, xAI’s Grok 4.5, ByteDance’s Seedream 5.0 and Google’s Nano Banana Pro. Each received the same creative prompt and the same reference images of Dark Helmet. Each was asked to create a premium motorsport T-shirt graphic using the car’s signature design elements, including its blacked-out widebody presence, helmet-visor stripe graphics, red lower accents, oversized rear wing, and track-focused aero. The prompt itself was developed with help from Higgsfield CLI connected to Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 so that the brief would be clear and even-handed for every entrant. The human designer worked from the identical prompt and the same source material. Now, the public gets to decide which designer produced the most attractive design.
Can Four of the World's Top AI Models Beat One Human Designer? Unplugged Performance Puts GPT Images, Grok, Seedream and Nano Banana to the Test
Voting is open now at unpluggedperformance.com/ai-t-shirt-challenge and runs through Aug. 24, 2026. Customers, fans, journalists, designers, Tesla enthusiasts and AI researchers can choose one of five designs: A, B, C, D, or E. Unplugged Performance will announce the winning design, name the human designer and identify which AI tool produced each of the other four entries on August 24, 2026.

The framing of the contest is deliberate. Rather than presenting AI as a replacement for designers, Unplugged Performance is testing how far AI output can be pushed with strong creative direction, and because all four tools received the same brief, the results offer a rare side-by-side read on how different models interpret one direction. Fans are judging which model created the strongest design, which one understood the brand best and which shirt people would actually wear. One further wrinkle gives the test an edge: because purely AI-generated images are generally not eligible for copyright protection in the United States, four of the five designs may not be protectable at all, while the human designer’s entry is.

All five designs are based on Dark Helmet, one of Unplugged Performance’s most recognizable builds. Known for its aggressive widebody aero, black-and-white livery and pink rear wing, the car has won at events including the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

All five designs are available at https://unpluggedperformance.com/ai-t-shirt-challenge/. Pricing, free-shirt redemption and voting mechanics appear under How to Participate below.
