The lightweight adventure motorcycle segment is becoming increasingly competitive, with manufacturers recognizing that not every rider wants a large-capacity twin-cylinder motorcycle for exploring dirt roads and remote trails. KTM has already made a strong case for smaller adventure bikes with its 390 Adventure R, but Yamaha could soon have an answer. The Japanese bikemaker has unveiled a new concept called the Tenere 4 that previews a smaller addition to its Tenere family, potentially bringing its rally-inspired adventure experience to a much more accessible platform. While the Tenere 4 project is still under development, its hardware suggests that Yamaha is taking its off-road ambitions seriously. If it reaches production, the new motorcycle could become an interesting alternative to KTM’s established lightweight adventure motorcycle.
Unveiled ahead of EICMA 2026, the Yamaha Tenere 4 Concept showcases a new potential entry point into the bikemaker’s adventure motorcycle family. Unlike the Tenere 700, which uses a parallel-twin engine, the smaller concept gets an entirely new single-cylinder powerplant. Yamaha has not disclosed its displacement or performance figures, although the new engine is stated to be developed to deliver strong low- and mid-range torque alongside usable performance at higher engine speeds. Its A2-focused positioning suggests that a production version would target close to the 47 HP European license limit. The titanium Akrapovic exhaust suggests its performance intent.
The engine sits inside a newly developed frame, with KYB suspension doing duty at both ends. The concept also gets proper off-road wheels with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels wrapped in Michelin Anakee Wild tires. The styling too follows the larger Tenere 700, featuring a narrow body, flat and low-profile fuel tank, and rally-inspired proportions. Yamaha says the concept draws on its experience of developing the Tenere 700, while leaning heavily on accessibility, agility and rider-focused ergonomics.
The most obvious rival for a production Tenere 4 would be the KTM 390 Adventure R. KTM’s lightweight adventure motorcycle uses a 398.7cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine delivering around 44 horsepower and 29 pound-feet of torque. It also features adjustable WP suspension with 230mm of travel at both ends, a 21-inch front wheel, and an 18-inch rear wheel. Weighing in at around 388 pounds, the KTM already offers a fairly serious off-road package in the sub-400cc adventure motorcycle category.
It seems like Yamaha is targeting a similar combination of manageable weight, accessible performance, and genuine off-road capability. However, at this stage, there is an important distinction between the two motorcycles. The 390 Adventure R is an established production model while the Tenere 4 remains a concept. Yamaha has not revealed engine size or specs so that makes a direct performance comparison a futile exercise.
The bigger question is whether Yamaha will take the concept into production and how aggressively will it price the motorcycle. A smaller Tenere would give Yamaha a more accessible alternative to the Tenere 700 while allowing it to compete in a segment where KTM already has a strong offering.
