Big adventure motorcycles are supposed to cross continents, tackle dirt roads and carry enough luggage for riders who consider packing lightly a personal insult. The problem is that these towering machines can become seriously intimidating when the road disappears or traffic slows to walking pace. Triumph Motorcycles has clearly been listening. Its latest heavyweight arrives with more muscle, sharper handling and technology designed to make all that size considerably less frightening. It can automatically lower itself when the rider stops, help lift itself onto the center stand and even warn when another vehicle gets too close. Underneath everything, however, is still a massive British triple built to cover stupid distances very quickly.

The New Triumph Tiger 1200 Gets More Power

The next-generation Triumph Tiger 1200 is officially here with an updated 1200cc T Plane triple producing 156 hp. That represents an increase of roughly 8 hp over the previous version. Triumph redesigned the cylinder head, fitted new pistons and installed lighter intake and exhaust valves. More precise fuel injection and a freer flowing exhaust help the engine breathe, while revised first, second and third gear ratios put more torque onto the road.

The changes are not only about chasing a larger number on the spec sheet. More torque is now available at lower engine speeds, making the Tiger easier to control during slow maneuvers. Revised gearing also reduces its crawl speed by approximately 3.7 mph.

Triumph has refined the crankshaft, balancer shaft, camshaft profiles, 6-speed gearbox and shaft drive. The company claims smoother gear selection and cleaner transitions between acceleration and deceleration. That should make the Tiger less clunky around town without removing the gruff character that makes the T Plane triple so entertaining.

This Giant Adventure Bike Lowers Itself At A Stop

The Tiger 1200 receives Showa EERA Heightflex semi-active suspension with Firm, Medium and Soft damping settings. The system continuously adjusts compression and rebound using information from several sensors and a six-axis IMU.

Its biggest trick happens when the motorcycle stops. The suspension automatically lowers the seat by 1.2 inches, helping shorter riders get their feet onto the ground. With the adjustable seat in its lowest position and the accessory low seat fitted, seat height can drop to approximately 31.1 inches.

There is even a Center Stand Assist function that temporarily raises the rear suspension while the stand is deployed. That reduces the effort needed to haul a fully loaded Tiger onto its stand, which should save plenty of riders from performing an embarrassing wrestling match outside a hotel.

Every model now uses a 19-inch front wheel and 17-inch rear wheel with 7.9 inches of suspension travel. GT versions use cast aluminum wheels for road riding, while Rally models receive side-laced spoke wheels for rougher terrain.

Triumph Has Loaded It With Luxury Car Technology

A new 7-inch touchscreen brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the Tiger 1200. Triumph has also added a cooled waterproof phone compartment with USB-C charging because navigation can quickly turn a smartphone into a pocket-sized toaster.

Front and rear Bosch radar unlock adaptive cruise control, blind spot warnings, forward collision warnings, emergency brake assistance and rear distance warnings. Group Ride Assist can even help maintain a suitable gap from other motorcycles ahead.

The range includes the GT Pro, Rally Pro, GT Explorer and Rally Explorer. Pro versions retain a 5.3 gallon fuel tank, while Explorer models get a huge 7.9-gallon tank for serious long distance work. Heated seats and three-stage heated grips are standard throughout the range.

Triumph has not included US pricing or dealership arrival dates in the announcement, but the new Tiger 1200 is clearly aimed straight at premium adventure bikes such as the BMW R 1300 GS and Ducati Multistrada V4.

It is more powerful, considerably smarter and easier to manage when stationary. Triumph has not made its biggest Tiger smaller. It has simply taught the beast some very clever new tricks.
