When we think of some of the most legendary roadsters ever, images of the timeless classic that is the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the BMW Z3, the Honda S2000, the Porsche Carrera GT, and the AC Shelby Cobra spring to mind — all of them small, two-seated, lightweight machines with awesome credentials. The luxury roadster we have in mind shares none of those physical traits, yet it belongs in the same conversation. It brings 2+2 seating, oodles of luxurious style, a beast of a V-8 under the hood, performance features that prove you can have agile fun at a larger scale, and a price tag that firmly announces its intentions. If size is your thing, this luxury roadster makes a compelling case that bigger really can be better.

Every automotive enthusiast knows the formula: lighter equals faster. Drop the weight, add the speed. It’s why legendary roadsters from the Miata to the Cobra kept things small and stripped down. The luxury market’s most ambitious drop-top challenger is the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Roadster: a four-seater, long-hooded, low-to-the-ground beast that throws its considerable weight around in the segment and shows other marques how a grand-sized roadster can do a bit of everything in one luxe package. Most of those legendary roadsters weigh under 3,000 pounds, but the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Roadster tips the scales at 4,321 pounds, produces 577 horsepower, and still hits 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63’s Dimensions Are As Opulent As They Should Be

The SL 63 rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase (the same as a Honda CR-V) and boasts overall dimensions of 182.5 inches long, 53.5 inches tall with the roof up, and 82.7 inches wide. Regardless of the crackling exhaust system, you’re going to notice this car coming. The front track width sits at 65.4 inches, and the rear track width measures 64 inches, while the whole package weighs in at a substantial 4,321 pounds.

Lots Of Room For You, Not So Much For Your Passengers

Given the SL 63’s imposing stature, you’d expect cavernous interior space for all occupants — but that isn’t exactly the case. Maximum cargo capacity comes in at just 7.5 cubic feet. Up front, you get a respectable 37.7 inches of headroom, 56.3 inches of shoulder room, and a generous 41.5 inches of legroom. The rear is a different story.

There is room for you and three passengers in the SL 63, but rear headroom measures just 32.7 inches and rear shoulder room only 44.1 inches. Rear legroom figures have not been officially released by Mercedes.

It’s Not Just The Size Of The SL 63’s Body, But Also The Engine

Under that excessively long hood sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 good for well over 500 horsepower, launching the SL 63 Roadster to 60 mph in times more befitting something far smaller and lighter.

With an SUV-rivaling weight of 4,321 pounds and a 577-horsepower engine, the AMG SL 63 posts a power-to-weight ratio of 0.136 horsepower per pound — and it still beats out sportier, lighter rivals to 60 mph, including the 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera (3,472 pounds, 4.0 seconds), the BMW M2 (3,814 pounds, 3.9 seconds), and the BMW Z4 (3,514 pounds, 3.9 seconds).

The 4.0-Liter V-8 Under The Hood

Central to this electrifying performance is the handcrafted AMG-tuned powertrain under the hood. In typical German fashion, it is meticulously engineered with a “Hot-V” configuration, which positions the twin-scroll turbos within the V of the cylinder banks — resulting in a compact layout, sharper turbo response, and optimized exhaust airflow.

The entire assembly is built around a die-cast aluminum crankcase to minimize weight. Inside, lightweight forged pistons run in Silitec-coated aluminum cylinder sleeves for smooth operation; dual overhead camshafts with continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust sides deliver precise valve control; and fuel delivery is handled by direct injection using piezoelectric injectors, enabling ultra-fine fuel atomization for a more complete combustion cycle.

Additionally, the SL 63’s powertrain is equipped with a dry-sump lubrication system to ensure optimum oil delivery under high loads — so you can keep pushing it hard — along with multiple independent cooling circuits to manage the intense heat generated. These include a high-temperature loop for the block and turbos, a low-temperature loop for the charge-air system, and a dedicated oil cooler with a heat exchanger.

AMG has thrown an enormous amount of engineering at the SL 63 and is bringing track-ready performance credentials to the road to make sure that it can still perform despite its considerable weight and near-luxury-sedan dimensions.

The AMG SL 63 May Be Big, But It Can Still Perform

Standout Performance Features Of The AMG SL 63

There is almost too much to mention about what makes the AMG SL 63 a true performance machine, but some of the standout standard features include the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system, which distributes torque to the right corners for peak traction and balance whether you’re launching off the line or threading through a twisty road, and AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension, which replaces traditional anti-roll bars with active hydraulic roll stabilization.

The system continuously adjusts to your driving style and road conditions, minimizing body roll while simultaneously delivering a comfortable ride and composed cornering.

Rear-axle steering adds agility by allowing the rear wheels to pivot in harmony with the fronts, while aerodynamic performance is managed by integrated active aero elements — including an adaptive rear spoiler and an active underbody air management system — that work together to generate meaningful downforce and keep the SL 63 planted.

Rounding out the package is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission — a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic gearbox built for performance. The selectable driving modes via AMG DYNAMIC SELECT let you dial in everything from relaxed grand-touring refinement to razor-sharp, seat-pinning urgency.

Interior Package And Neck-Level Heating For Open-Top Winter Driving

As standard, alongside the raucous V-8 and track-ready hardware, the cabin is trimmed in Nappa leather upholstery. An AIRSCARF neck-level heating system delivers a gentle warm airflow around your neck with the roof down, meaning open-top driving isn’t limited to warm-weather days. A 64-color LED ambient lighting system is included as well, along with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an adjustable 11.9-inch touchscreen to keep you connected and in command of the SL 63’s settings.

Quality And Rapid With High Prices To Prove It

The starting price of the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 Roadster is $187,850, and that’s before adding options or factoring in running costs. At that figure, you’re paying roughly $325 per horsepower from the beefy 4.0-liter V-8. Fuel costs will also make themselves known: the SL 63 is rated at a combined 16 mpg — 21 mpg on the highway and 14 mpg in the city — costing you, on average, $3,850 a year in fuel, or roughly $10,750 more over five years compared to the average modern vehicle. And if the base price wasn’t enough, a full menu of options stands ready to help you spend further.
