Volkswagen just gave its three-row family hauler a complete overhaul, and the changes go well beyond a new grille. The 2027 Atlas is an all-new, second-generation model, and its biggest transformation happens where families actually spend their time: the cabin. Real wood trim is now standard across every trim level, a first for the Atlas, alongside ambient lighting that can be tuned to 10 colors on base models and 30 on R-Line trims.

The redesign isn’t just about materials. Volkswagen paired the upscale cabin with a more powerful engine, a bigger standard touchscreen, and a longer list of standard driver assistance features than any Atlas before it. Pricing starts at $41,610 for the front-wheel-drive SE, and the whole lineup is still built in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

A Cabin That Finally Looks The Part

The last-generation Atlas was praised for space and practicality, but nobody called its interior upscale. Volkswagen addressed that directly with the 2027 redesign. Real wood décor now comes standard on every trim, ranging from a lighter finish on entry models to a darker coffee tone on the range-topping SEL Premium R-Line. That top trim also gets quilted Nappa leather seats with microfiber inlays on the bolsters, a material usually reserved for luxury-brand interiors.

The infotainment display grows with the trim walk too. SE models get a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while every other trim jumps to a 15-inch display paired with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster. Ambient lighting is standard across the board, with the base setup offering 10 colors that illuminate the door pockets and center console, while R-Line models expand to 30 colors and extend the lighting through the dashboard and front footwells.

More Power And Better Fuel Economy From The Same Basic Engine

Every 2027 Atlas uses an updated version of Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter EA888 four-cylinder, badged evo5. It now makes 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, a 13-horsepower bump over the outgoing engine. Volkswagen reworked the turbocharger with a variable-geometry design, increased fuel injection pressure, and revised the combustion chamber to lean more heavily on the Miller cycle, changes aimed at squeezing out more performance without sacrificing efficiency.

That combination actually improved fuel economy over the previous Atlas. Front-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated at 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, while 4Motion all-wheel-drive versions come in at 20 city and 27 highway. Power still routes through an 8-speed automatic, and most trims retain a 5,000-pound towing capacity with a braked trailer.

Family-Friendly Features Families Actually Asked For

Volkswagen leaned into practicality alongside the luxury upgrades. A power tailgate with foot-kick activation is now standard across the lineup, along with rear sunshades, a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area, and dual wireless phone charging pads up front that support MagSafe. Three child seats can fit across the standard second-row bench, and a new folding mechanism lets that bench tilt and slide forward for easier entry, even with child seats still installed.

Safety got an upgrade too. The 2027 Atlas adds a new front center airbag, bringing the total to seven standard airbags, along with Volkswagen’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System, which unlocks the doors and cuts the fuel pump after certain collisions.

Standard Driver Assistance Across The Entire Lineup

Perhaps the most significant shift for everyday buyers is what Volkswagen now includes standard rather than locking behind options. Every 2027 Atlas comes with the brand’s IQ.DRIVE suite, which bundles Travel Assist for semi-automated highway driving with assisted lane changes, Front Assist with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, and Active Blind Spot Monitor that can countersteer the car back into its lane.

That’s a meaningful change for shoppers comparing three-row SUVs, since many rivals still charge extra for adaptive cruise control or lane-centering assist on base trims. Higher trims add further extras: SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line include a head-up display, Dynamic Road Sign Display, and Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control that adjusts speed ahead of curves or exit ramps using the navigation system.

Volkswagen is selling four trims for 2027: SE, SE w/Tech, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line, giving buyers a wide range between the $41,610 starting price and the loaded Premium R-Line. For families cross-shopping the three-row segment, the pitch is straightforward: an Atlas that finally feels as upscale inside as it is spacious, without giving up the practicality that made the nameplate popular in the first place.
