Vauxhall has revealed a bold new version of its griffin emblem ahead of the Paris motor show next month, where it will make its debut on the a future-looking concept car.
The “more streamlined and contemporary look” comes as part of an evolution in Vauxhall’s design language, which will be previewed by the STX concept on 12 October.
Giving an early glimpse of the STX, Vauxhall has revealed that the new logo will form part of a new-look front end that builds on the ‘Vizor’ face of its current models.
Described as “even bolder” than the visage of the current cars, this will introduce a distinctive lighting signature made up of thin LED strips that surround the new-look, illuminated logo.
Vauxhall has updated its badge several times in recent years, but this is one of the most significant revisions since the original version of today’s griffin and ‘V-flag’ motif was introduced in the 1950s.
The new logo does away with the flag entirely for the first time in 111 years, as part of a move to a cleaner and simpler look.
The griffin mascot has been redesigned too, assuming a sharper and more minimalist shape in keeping with Vauxhall’s new ‘bold and pure’ styling ethos.
Vauxhall’s design boss Mark Adams said: “The griffin emblem is instantly recognisable, with Vauxhalls seen on almost every street in Britain. Having adorned our vehicles in different forms for more than 120 years, we wanted to retain its essential elements while streamlining it for the next generation of electrified vehicles.
“As the griffin is now illuminated on the front of our latest models, this simpler design also makes it clearer and easier to identify.”
After making its debut on the STX in a couple of weeks, the new logo will appear on an “all-new Vauxhall production model” in 2027 – possibly the next Corsa Electric.
It will also be used at Vauxhall’s dealerships, but the company hasn’t given a timeline for all retailers to switch to the new branding.
