There is a certain group of cars that are world-famous and the Special Edition 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is certainly one of them. Just as movies and TV shows like Starsky and Hutch, James Bond, Gone in 60 Seconds, Knight Rider, and Magnum, P.I. introduced their various four-wheeled stars to a global audience, so did the film Smokey and the Bandit.

Burt Reynolds was the lead actor in this chase movie from 1977, but in reality, he often played second fiddle to his black and gold Trans Am. It became the dream car for so many after the movie hit the screens, and now even 45 years later it still manages to capture the imagination.

With that in mind, HotCars digital artist Rostislav Prokop created a modern interpretation of the Pontiac’s iconic muscle car from the 1970s and although it probably will never see the light of day, the concept shows a lot of promise.

The original from 1977 will be forever loved by car enthusiasts and movie fans alike. But how would a modern version of this old-school muscle car look? Well, HotCars digital artist Rostislav Prokop has come up with an answer with render. He has managed to strike a balance of maintaining all the elements of the ’77 Trans Am but introducing features that make this classic feel like it just rolled off the assembly line.

Prokop has kept the black paintwork and tweaked the gold trimmings only slightly. The legendary firebird remains but he has amplified what lies beneath. The overall shape of the hood, twin rectangular headlights, and front end remain. However, a much more prominent front bumper with larger vents serves to bring the car closer to the ground and gives it a much more aggressive appearance. Prokop has added skirts and vents to the sides to compliment the work done to the front of this Pontiac Trans Am.

The stunning reworking of the rear end features wide arches and a deeper bumper to house the modernly styled diffusers. But like the rest of the car, there is a nod to the original by keeping the shape of the taillights and giving them a futuristic LED surround. Overall, this is a mouthwatering vision of the Trans Am and one that any gearhead would love to see in production.

Despite its fame and external extravagance, the ’77 Pontiac Trans Am wasn’t exactly the speediest of muscle cars. Its 6.6-liter V8 engine would need a major upgrade if it was ever to make a return to our roads. It’s fun to imagine what could be under the hood of this restomod.

The 5.5-liter V8 from the 2023 Corvette Z06 would be an interesting choice. However, a modified version of the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 from the Camaro ZL1 with 1,000-hp would make this a real threat to the Dodge Hellcats and Shelby Ford Mustang GT500s of the world.
