Mercedes-Benz has announced the most comprehensive update in C-Class history, and it touches nearly everything. The 2027 C-Class arrives at U.S. dealerships in the first half of 2027 with a redesigned exterior, a new AI-powered infotainment system built on Mercedes’ own operating system, and a further-developed electrified engine — a combination the brand says goes further than any previous refresh of its best-selling sedan.
The headline story is technology. The new MBUX Virtual Assistant, powered by a multi-agent AI approach combining ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini, brings genuine conversational capability to the cabin — including short-term memory that lets it retain context across a conversation. That’s paired with Mercedes’ new MB.OS operating system, which enables over-the-air software updates across the entire vehicle. For a midsize luxury sedan that has sold more than 12 million units globally since 1982, this is a significant step forward.
The fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system is the most ambitious version yet. Rather than relying on a single AI engine, Mercedes uses what it calls a multi-agent approach — drawing on ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini simultaneously. The result is a virtual assistant that can handle multi-turn conversations, remember what was said earlier in a session, and pull from a wide knowledge base covering navigation, points of interest, stock prices, weather, and even ski slope conditions.
The assistant appears on the MBUX Zero Layer as a customizable “living” avatar — three options are available — and integrates directly with Google Maps through Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent, one of the first in-car systems to do so. Entertainment gets smarter too: if a passenger can’t recall a song title or artist, the assistant can identify it from context and start playing it directly. The optional Burmester 3D Surround Sound System, now featuring Dolby Atmos, 15 speakers, and a 710-watt amplifier, gives that music room to breathe.
Underpinning all of this is MB.OS, Mercedes’ new in-house operating system. It manages every domain of the vehicle and enables over-the-air updates for the full software stack — meaning the 2027 C-Class can improve and gain new features after it leaves the dealership. Owners can also purchase and activate Digital Extras through the Mercedes-Benz Store and app, spanning audio, video, gaming, and driver assistance functions.
The driver assistance suite, called MB.DRIVE, comes standard with lane-keeping, distance maintenance, braking, and acceleration support. A new Reverse Maneuvering Function — also standard — can automatically back the car along the route it most recently traveled, displaying the reversing camera feed and a planned-route graphic on the central screen. The system uses eight cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors processed in real time by AI algorithms trained on fleet data.
The powertrain story is equally notable. The updated M 254 EVO 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pairs with a second-generation integrated starter-generator (ISG 2.0) running on a 48-volt electrical system. Combined output is 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, with the ISG 2.0 contributing up to 23 hp and 151 lb-ft at lower engine speeds to fill in where a conventional turbo would lag.
The key addition is an electric auxiliary compressor, also powered by the 48-volt system. It spools up in milliseconds to complement the exhaust-driven turbocharger, eliminating the pause in power delivery that buyers often notice in turbocharged engines during everyday driving. An overboost function adds another 27 hp for roughly 20 seconds when needed — useful for highway merges or passing. Mercedes also retuned the suspension with stiffer connections and newly calibrated adaptive damping for sharper responses without sacrificing long-haul comfort.
Visually, the 2027 C-Class is immediately recognizable but noticeably sharper. The new radiator grille features chrome stars forming the classic Mercedes pattern, with LED lighting integrated into the surround and an illuminated central star — the first time the C-Class grille has been lit. Star-pattern daytime running lights carry the motif into the headlamps, and the same design extends to the taillights. LED projectors in the door sills cast a Mercedes-Benz pattern onto the ground when doors open.
Inside, the 12.3-inch driver display and 11.9-inch portrait-oriented central screen carry over in layout but gain the new MB.OS interface. Two new upholstery colors — warm Beech Brown and Cherry Red — join the palette alongside three new trim elements including Natural Grain Birch Wood and High-Gloss Silver Metallic. Ambient lighting spans 64 colors across ten color worlds, with four dimming zones and five brightness levels. Two new exterior colors, Miami Silver Metallic and Moody Sky Grey Metallic, expand the paint options, and the new AMG Line Plus package adds a spoiler lip, gloss-black tailpipe trim, sports seats with red contrast stitching, and red seat belts.
The 2027 C-Class lands at U.S. dealerships in the first half of 2027. Pricing has not yet been announced, but the scope of this update — new operating system, conversational AI, electrified powertrain, and a redesigned exterior — positions it as one of the more complete mid-cycle refreshes in the segment. For buyers cross-shopping the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4, this is a C-Class that now has a compelling technology argument to go alongside its traditional strengths.
