Volkswagen has announced UK pricing for the new ID.3 Neo, an updated version of its electric family hatchback that introduces improved battery range and an overhauled interior.

Replacing the existing ID.3, Volkswagen says the Neo’s interior layout and electric drive systems are all new, accompanied by its latest infotainment software and driver assistance technology. The car has also been given some exterior design tweaks.

The ID.3 Neo will continue to compete in the crowded electric family car market against models such as the MG 4, Kia EV3, Renault Megane E-Tech and Cupra Born, while Volkswagen’s smaller ID. Polo will shortly give the brand a more affordable electric model below it.

Up to 390 miles of range

Three battery sizes are available: 50kWh, 58kWh and 79kWh, with Volkswagen claiming each provides a longer range than its equivalent in the previous ID.3 range.

The largest ’79kWh’ battery offers up to 390 miles on a charge, essentially matching the maximum single charge travel distance of the closely related Cupra Born and exceeding the Kia EV3 ‘Long Range’ by around 15 miles.

Power varies with battery size. The 50kWh ‘Life’ produces 170hp, increasing to 190hp with the 58kWh battery and 231hp with the 79kWh version.

DC rapid charging ranges from 100kW to 183kW, depending on version, with a 10% to 80% recharge taking as little as 26 minutes.

One-pedal driving is also introduced, allowing the car to slow all the way to a standstill using regenerative braking. An optional vehicle-to-load (V2L) adapter can turn the charging connection into a 3.6kW power supply for external electrical equipment.

Volkswagen responds to criticism of ID.3 interior

Some of the most substantial changes are found inside, where Volkswagen says it has responded to customer feedback with a greater emphasis on conventional, intuitive controls.

The redesigned cabin features more physical buttons and rotary controls, fewer gloss-black surfaces and upgraded materials. A ten-inch driver’s display is paired with a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, with both offering a retro display mode similar to the forthcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross.

Volkswagen’s new Innovision infotainment software also introduces an integrated app store, while an enhanced version of Travel Assist can recognise traffic lights and automatically stop the car at a red signal.

Three trim levels

The range comprises ‘Life’, ‘Style’ and the limited-run ‘Style Launch Edition’.

Life includes adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, a reversing camera, navigation and wireless smartphone connectivity and charging. Style adds equipment including heated front seats and steering wheel, keyless entry, Matrix LED headlights, privacy glass and upgraded sports comfort seats.

The Style Launch Edition sits at the top of the initial range, adding a head-up display, panoramic glass roof, electrically adjustable massaging front seats, Travel Assist 3.0 and Park Assist Pro.

Pricing and availability

The Volkswagen ID.3 Neo goes on sale in the UK on 13th August, and every version qualifies for the Government’s £1,500 Electric Car Grant.

Before the grant, prices start at £33k for the 50kWh ‘Life’, around £35k for the 58kWh ‘Life’ and £37k for the 79kWh ‘Life’.

The 58kWh ‘Style’ costs £38.5k while the 79kWh ‘Style’ is £40k. Finally, the 58kWh ‘Style Launch Edition’ is priced at £40k.
