Ford Racing has just announced the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible — the most powerful open-air Mustang ever built, and the first high-performance Mustang drop-top in 13 years. Under the hood sits a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 producing 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Orders open this fall, with dealer arrivals set for spring 2027.
This isn’t the Dark Horse SC coupe wearing a softer roof. Ford Racing engineered the convertible from the ground up as a grand-touring street machine — a car built to be heard, felt, and seen, rather than optimized for lap times. That distinction matters, and it shapes every decision from chassis reinforcement to suspension tuning to the color palette.
795 Supercharged Horses, No Roof Required
The SC designation stands for supercharged, and it’s the defining feature of this new Dark Horse variant. Ford Racing’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 — the same displacement as the flat-plane Voodoo engine Mustang enthusiasts know well, now force-fed — delivers 795 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel per SAE J1349 standards. That output flows through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, chosen for its ability to manage big power with fast, clean shifts that suit both highway cruising and hard acceleration.
Drop the roof and the experience changes completely. Without a headliner or fixed structure between driver and sky, the cabin opens up to what Ford Racing describes as the full, unfiltered soundtrack of the V8 — a deep rumble layered with the distinct whine of the supercharger. It’s a sensory combination that no closed-top car can replicate, and it’s clearly the emotional centerpiece of the convertible’s appeal.
Engineering For The Street, Not The Stopwatch
Ford Racing chief engineer Arie Groeneveld was direct about the brief: the convertible was never meant to chase the coupe’s track credentials. “Instead of prioritizing the convertible for setting lap times, we’ve engineered it to be the ultimate top-down grand touring machine,” he said.
That philosophy shows in the chassis work. Starting with the Mustang GT 5.0-liter convertible’s architecture, Ford Racing engineers added a magnesium tower-to-tower brace across the engine bay — strong and lightweight — to handle the structural demands of 795 hp in an open-body platform. Paired with that brace is a specially tuned next-generation MagneRide suspension, the same adaptive damper system used across the Dark Horse family but calibrated differently here. The goal is a smooth, comfortable ride in cruise mode that firms up and plants the car the moment the driver gets on the throttle. Grand touring, not track-day tool.
Styling That Makes A Statement Before It Moves
Ford Racing global director Mark Rushbrook framed the convertible’s identity simply: “If the coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula.”
The styling reinforces that. New color options include Precision Purple exterior paint — a bold choice that signals this car is built to be noticed. Unique brake caliper colors and a premium interior available in Black Onyx and Space Gray round out the visual package. The aggressive stance carries over from the Dark Horse coupe, so the silhouette reads as performance even at a standstill. Ford Mustang brand marketing manager Ryan Shaughnessy put it plainly: “We are giving a new generation of drivers a premium, high-performance street machine that is just as fun to be seen in as it is to drive.”

Ford Racing confirmed that the Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible opens for orders in fall 2026, with cars arriving at dealer showrooms starting spring 2027. Pricing has not been disclosed.
