Jaguar Just Gave Its Haters Even More To Talk About
Few automotive reinventions have attracted as much fury as Jaguar’s transformation. The new logo, car-free advertising campaign, and wildly dramatic Type 00 concept convinced some enthusiasts that the British brand had abandoned everything they once loved about it. Jaguar did not apologize, retreat, or quietly sneak back to the drawing board.
Instead, it has doubled down. The upcoming Type 01 electric grand tourer carries that controversial design philosophy into production, and Jaguar has now provided our first look inside. Anyone hoping for traditional wood trim, familiar instruments, and a cozy old-school cabin should probably prepare themselves. This interior looks more like an expensive modern apartment carved from stone, complete with a giant central spine dividing everyone aboard.
The Jaguar Type 01 Interior Will Divide Opinions
The most dramatic feature is a central spine running through the entire cabin. It separates the Type 01 into four individual seating spaces and emphasizes the car’s unusually long proportions. Jaguar says this is a concept-car idea brought directly into production. That spine wears a brass-inspired finish that continues along the tops of the doors, with Jaguar’s leaping-cat emblem worked into the design. The surrounding colors and textures take inspiration from travertine stone and artisan textiles, giving the cabin a warm, architectural appearance.
Depending on your taste, it looks beautifully minimalist or like the lobby of an outrageously expensive wellness retreat. Either way, nobody will mistake it for the interior of an F-Type or XJ.
The seating position is low, with the cabin designed to wrap closely around the driver. Jaguar promises a cosseting and confidence-inspiring experience, although the remaining passengers receive their own clearly defined areas rather than being dumped onto one enormous rear bench.
Jaguar chief interior designer Thomas Holden says the brand deliberately rejected the horizontal layouts commonly found in modern vehicles. The lengthwise spine instead turns the interior into what Jaguar calls an “architectural statement.” That is an ambitious description for a center console, but subtlety clearly left the building several years ago.
Jaguar Is Hiding The Screens Until You Need Them
The dashboard is extremely slim, continuing the Type 01’s clean and almost furniture-like design. Thankfully, Jaguar has not simply glued several enormous tablets across it and declared the job complete.
Its digital interfaces are integrated into the architecture and designed to appear when required. Concealed storage areas and other hidden-until-needed technologies keep the interior visually clean, while unexpected flashes of color prevent the cabin from becoming one enormous beige cave.
A digital ClearSight rearview display sits centrally at the base of the windshield. Jaguar has deliberately positioned it at roughly the same height as the door mirrors, theoretically allowing the driver to check all three with minimal eye movement.
That camera-based display should also solve a problem created by the Type 01’s dramatic exterior. Its tiny rear window and thick rear bodywork are unlikely to provide the kind of natural visibility drivers enjoyed in older Jaguars.
There is something refreshing about a luxury car trying to hide its technology rather than making passengers stare at a glowing wall. However, Jaguar has not yet demonstrated how these interfaces operate, so we will need to wait before deciding whether the minimalist design is genuinely intuitive or simply beautiful in press photographs.
The Haters Will Have Plenty To Say On October 6
Jaguar’s reinvention started attracting criticism before anyone had even seen the vehicle. Its “Copy Nothing” campaign featured brightly dressed models but no actual cars, leading to confusion, ridicule, and accusations that the company was abandoning its heritage.
The Type 00 concept added even more fuel with its enormous proportions, unusual strikethrough graphics, bright colors, and almost brutalist appearance. Some loved the confidence, while others wondered what happened to the graceful British sports cars Jaguar once built.
The Type 01 is where that risky experiment becomes real. This is not another design study that Jaguar can park in a museum after collecting headlines. It is the first production car created under the company’s new philosophy, making its reception enormously important.
A camouflaged prototype will appear during Monterey Car Week before arriving at the Pebble Beach Concours on August 16. Jaguar will then reveal the complete production car in New York on October 6, 2026.
This first interior preview makes one thing perfectly clear. Jaguar has heard the criticism and decided that changing course would be far less interesting than causing another argument. Whether the Type 01 becomes a bold new chapter or an extremely expensive identity crisis, nobody can accuse it of being boring.
