The Budget Performance Car Enthusiasts Buy Instead Of A BMW M2

For enthusiasts, the 2026 BMW M2 sets the benchmark for modern performance coupes with its turbocharged inline-six, rear-wheel drive, and available manual transmission. The catch is the price. With a starting MSRP of nearly $69,000, and well-optioned models approaching $90,000, it’s out of reach for many. Thankfully, there’s another sports coupe that quietly delivers many of the same qualities for $58,300, making it one of today’s smartest performance bargains. It may not have an M badge, but it offers much of the same excitement at a more accessible price.

Why Pay BMW M2 Money?

The M2 Is Excitable, But It Isn’t Cheap

The BMW M2 is one of the most exciting performance coupes on sale today, powered by a turbocharged inline-six producing 473 horsepower and up to 443 pound-feet of torque in automatic guise. Its razor-sharp handling, rear-wheel-drive layout, and available six-speed manual have earned widespread praise from reviewers, with Car and Driver describing it as a car that preserves BMW’s classic driving virtues and delivers a rewarding, enthusiast-focused experience.

For those who crave Bavaria’s finest, the M2 certainly stands out. Yet it’s the pricing that will likely divide purists. The M2 pushes the upper limits of what many enthusiasts consider realistic for a compact sports coupe. As one Edmunds owner wrote: “The M2 is one of the best sports cars on the market and still reasonable in terms of value per dollar.” That inevitably leads buyers to look for alternatives that deliver similar excitement at a lower cost, and this is where the 2025 Toyota GR Supra steps in.

The Toyota GR Supra 3.0 Is That Car

BMW Performance Without The BMW Price

The 2026 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 stands out as a real alternative to pricier German rivals, delivering BMW-level performance at a much more accessible price. With a starting MSRP of $58,300, it undercuts the BMW M2 and positions itself as a performance bargain in today’s sports coupe market. Under the hood, the Supra uses BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 inline-six, good for 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can pick between a crisp six-speed manual or a refined ZF eight-speed automatic. Our test model had the automatic and hit 0–60 mph in just 3.9 seconds—matching the automatic BMW M2’s claimed sprint despite costing less, while the manual M2 reaches 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

The Supra feels lighter, more playful, and more connected than its price tag suggests. What stood out to me wasn’t just the performance; it was the way the chassis, steering, and B58 engine work together to create an engaging drive. It’s not trying to be an M2, and I’m not going to tell you to buy the Supra instead of the M2. If you have the budget, I recommend the M2. But if you want a sports car that gets incredibly close for about $10,000 less, the Supra makes a strong case for itself, and the GR Supra tugs at the heartstrings. Its low proportions and sharp, striking exterior—especially in our test car’s grey with black wheels—make it a real head-turner. In my opinion, it looks better than the new M2. If you think the Supra is ugly, you may want to reconsider.

The Supra’s Design Is Overflowing With Character

It turns heads, and out on the open road, the B58 engine sings. It’s potent, powerful, and can be surprisingly efficient. I recorded a best fuel economy of 26.1 mpg, while spirited driving dropped it to 18.1 mpg. That’s almost identical to the 26 mpg achieved by Car and Driver during its 75-mph highway fuel economy test of the BMW M2. What impressed me most wasn’t just the Supra’s speed, but how naturally it communicates with the driver.

Whether you go manual or automatic, the drivetrain feels perfectly matched to the car’s lively personality. This sense of cohesion is what sets the Supra apart. But you may be wondering how the Supra and M2 compare in detail. Let’s break it down. As Edmunds puts it: “Price-wise, sports cars like the Mustang Dark Horse, Chevrolet Corvette, and BMW M2 start where the GR Supra tops out… the Supra is a relative bargain in this segment.”

It Delivers More Than Just Straight-Line Speed

Lightweight, Balanced, And Genuinely Engaging

Despite their shared BMW roots, the Toyota GR Supra and BMW M2 take different directions under the skin. The Supra weighs just 3,400 pounds in manual guise, while the M2 tips the scales at 3,814 pounds with the manual and 3,867 pounds with the automatic. That weight difference gives the Supra a more agile and playful feel. BMW’s CLAR platform underpins both cars, but Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division has retuned the Supra’s chassis, suspension, steering, and differential.

The result is a sports car that feels eager to change direction, while the M2 is tuned to be more planted and composed. The Supra is a dedicated two-seater built with the driver in mind. The M2 adds rear seats, making it the more practical choice if you need everyday usability alongside serious performance. Bottom line: the M2 is the more versatile all-around performance coupe, but the Supra focuses on lightness, balance, and driver engagement.

It Costs Thousands Less Than A BMW M2

The Performance Bargain Enthusiasts Keep Buying

Ownership can be easier on the wallet with the Supra, backed by Toyota’s reputation for reliability and the proven durability of BMW’s B58 turbocharged inline-six. The B58 is widely regarded as one of the most reliable and respected six-cylinder turbo engines on the market, with strong aftermarket support for enthusiasts looking to unlock even more performance.

The value goes beyond the initial purchase price. RepairPal estimates the Toyota Supra’s average annual repair cost at around $561, undercutting many European performance cars. RepairPal does not publish a model-specific reliability rating or annual repair cost for the BMW M2 due to limited data.

On the used market, the Supra continues to hold its value. Kelley Blue Book lists well-maintained, recent-model Supras in the mid-$40,000 to low-$50,000 range. At the same time, recent Bring a Trailer sales show clean, low-mileage examples regularly fetching $45,000 to more than $55,000, highlighting sustained demand among enthusiasts. Comparable BMW M2s typically command higher prices on the used market, reinforcing the Supra’s reputation as a performance coupe that delivers strong value not only when new, but throughout ownership.

It Has Already Earned Modern Performance Car Status

A Sports Car That’s Easy To Recommend

The GR Supra has pulled off what many modern sports cars can’t—it’s won over skeptics and built a genuine enthusiast following. I’m confident time will be kind to the Supra. Reviving such an iconic nameplate was a bold gamble by Toyota, but it’s clear the move has paid off. No, it will never be a BMW M car—and it doesn’t need to be. The Supra has forged its own identity by blending Toyota’s distinct sports car philosophy with one of BMW’s finest engines. If you’re a BMW fan looking for something fresh, the GR Supra is an easy recommendation. Add in robust aftermarket support and massive tuning potential, and it’s no surprise the Supra is now one of the most coveted enthusiast cars out there.
