• Maintenance and warranty repairs covered at no cost to the city
• Partnership supports water safety education and community outreach
Hyundai Motor America and the City of San Diego are highlighting their partnership supporting the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Lifeguard Division through a fully supported fleet of vehicles and expanded water safety outreach programs.
As the Official Vehicle of the San Diego Lifeguards, Hyundai is providing 32 vehicles, including 18 Hyundai Santa Cruz trucks, 12 Hyundai Palisade XRT SUVs, and two Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric vehicles. The vehicles are replaced every two to three years, with Hyundai covering preventive maintenance, vehicle upfitting and warranty repairs throughout the terms of the partnership.
‘Hyundai is proud to support the lifeguards who protect San Diego’s residents and visitors every day,’ said Randy Parker, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. ‘This partnership combines reliable transportation, safety education, and community engagement to help strengthen emergency response and promote safer experiences on and around the water.’
‘Protecting 17 miles of Pacific coastline and 27 miles of Mission Bay requires reliability and dependable vehicles,’ said James Gartland, division chief, San Diego Lifeguard Division, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. ‘Our new fleet of Hyundai trucks ensures our teams can respond quickly, safely and efficiently. Beyond providing elite equipment, Hyundai is actively helping us save lives and prevent emergencies through proactive water safety media and outreach.’
Supporting Lifeguard Operations and Water Safety Education
The partnership is focused on supporting the mobility and operational needs of the San Diego Lifeguards while promoting water safety awareness through community engagement and educational programming. In addition to providing vehicles, Hyundai and the City of San Diego are working to strengthen public safety both on and off the beach.
Hyundai and the City of San Diego Expand Public Safety Partnership
The collaboration demonstrates how public-private partnerships can deliver measurable benefits for communities by strengthening essential services, expanding public education, and maximizing the value of public resources.
Through this initiative, Hyundai aims to:
• Support emergency response operations along San Diego’s coastline.
• Help facilitate the delivery of water safety education and outreach programs throughout the community.
• Reduce operational costs for the city.
• Demonstrate the role Hyundai vehicles can play in supporting public safety and emergency response operations.
Fleet Designed for Coastal Operations
The San Diego Lifeguard fleet includes Hyundai Santa Cruz trucks for transporting equipment along the shoreline, Palisade XRT SUVs for personnel and operational support, and IONIQ 5 electric vehicles that showcase how electrified mobility can support essential public services. The vehicles enable lifeguard personnel to access patrol areas, transport specialized equipment, and support training and community outreach activities throughout the region.
