Volvo XC40, EX40 and EC40 get tech and styling update
Volvo has announced a significant update for its XC40, EX40 and EC40 models, bringing redesigned front ends, upgraded infotainment and new safety tech.
The three ’40 Series’ models make up Volvo’s compact SUV range, with the XC40 being the ICE-powered option while the EX40 is its electric counterpart. The EC40 uses the same electric underpinnings as the EX40 but with a more coupé-like sloping roofline.
Volvo has updated the models with new exterior looks, additional sensors and its latest infotainment technology.
Redesigned front end
All three models get a new interpretation of Volvo’s familiar ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights, accompanied by a redesigned grille, front bumper, bonnet and front wings.
The XC40 and EX40 also receive redesigned LED tail lights, a revised tailgate and a new rear bumper. The EC40’s existing rear-end design remains largely unchanged. New 18-, 19- and 20-inch alloy wheel designs have also been introduced for the XC40.
Changes inside include a larger 11-inch central touchscreen running Volvo’s latest infotainment interface, which is intended to reduce the number of steps needed to reach commonly used functions.
Google’s Gemini AI assistant is integrated into the system, allowing drivers to use conversational voice commands for tasks including journey planning and messaging.
Volvo has also revised the wireless phone charging pad design and introduced new upholstery and interior trim choices. XC40 customers can specify Cardamom-coloured leather with ‘Brown Ash’ wood trim for the first time, while ‘Black Ash’ and aluminium finishes are also available.
New cameras and radar sensors
The update brings more substantial changes to the cars’ safety and driver assistance hardware.
The new sensor package includes front and corner radar units, a new forward-facing camera, rear corner radars and 12 new ultrasonic sensors, along with new parking cameras.
This supports a new Door Opening Alert, which warns occupants if a cyclist or other road user is approaching before they open a door. Automatic emergency braking and emergency steering assistance are also included, allowing the car to intervene if it detects a potential collision.
The optional ‘Pilot Assist’ system has been upgraded with lane-change assistance and revised lane-following behaviour, while the optional 360-degree parking camera now provides a three-dimensional view of the car’s surroundings.
As before, the XC40, EX40 and EC40 will receive over-the-air software updates after purchase.
Order books for the updated Volvo XC40, EX40 and EC40 are already opening in selected markets, with production scheduled to begin later this autumn.
