• Upgraded interior with ‘Atami Bamboo’ décor and improved functionality
• Two proven variants: Grand California 600 and 680 based on the VW Crafter
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is continuously enhancing the Grand California, introducing new features that make the motorhome even more comfortable, digital, and independent. The focus is on optimised energy supply, new driver assistance systems, and a further refined living concept – for even greater freedom when travelling.
As the brand’s largest campervan, the Grand California remains true to its concept: built on the current Crafter generation, available in two lengths and interior layouts, fully manufactured by Volkswagen, and designed as a complete vehicle from a single source. At the same time, the new model introduces targeted highlights in key usage areas.
Two new equipment packages mean customers can now choose to swap the standard AGM battery, for either two additional LiFePO₄ batteries, or the new Off-grid package. For the first time, this combines a permanently installed solar panel system (104 W peak in the Grand California 600, 174 W in the Grand California 680) with modern lithium technology.
The benefits are clear: compared with AGM technology, LiFePO₄ batteries offer around five times higher cycle life and feature integrated deep-discharge protection, ensuring highly reliable operation. The usable capacity is increased by almost 40% – from 46 Ah with the conventional 92 Ah AGM battery to around 64 Ah with two LiFePO₄ batteries. Higher charging and discharging currents also significantly reduce charging times. Notably, the secondary on-board electrical system allows maximum charging currents of up to 200 amps.
In combination with the Grand California’s new solar panel system, this significantly enhances self-sufficiency: energy can be generated via photovoltaic panels even while driving, with PV charging prioritised in ECO mode – an additional contribution to CO₂ reduction and more sustainable travel. This makes the Grand California even less dependent on external infrastructure and particularly attractive for extended off-grid stays.
The packages are available to order in Germany from €833.00 for the upgrade to LiFePO₄, and €1,719.55 for the solar and LiFePO₄ package in the Grand California 600 or €2,326.45 in the Grand California 680.
In terms of safety and driving comfort, the Grand California benefits from enhanced assistance systems. These include driver monitoring for fatigue detection as standard and, optionally, Intersection Assist to support manoeuvring and urban driving.
Digital features have also been significantly expanded: new infotainment systems with displays of up to 12 inches, smartphone integration and online services.
The updated interior design with ‘Atami Bamboo’ décor has already proven successful. It creates a warm, luxurious atmosphere, while practical details such as additional storage solutions and a versatile table make everyday life on the road more convenient.
The Grand California is available in two variants: the compact Grand California 600 with a transverse bed; and the more spacious Grand California 680 with longitudinal beds. Both models combine a well-thought-out living concept with modern technology and excellent touring capability.
With these innovations, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles underlines its ambition to continuously enhance the Grand California – as a fully-fledged motorhome for comfortable and independent travel at the highest level.
