The SUV segment has all but taken over the auto market in the U.S., and among it is the fastest-growing powertrain segment: hybrids. Most brands are now producing hybrid SUVs that either prioritize power thanks to electrical assistance, or long gas tank ranges and high mpg ratings.

Because the hybrid SUV market is getting so big and well-catered for, prices now range from the high $20,000 mark to over $200,000 (that would be for the exceptional Bentley Bentayga Hybrid). However, the majority of us will be looking to spend somewhat less for a new hybrid SUV that delivers. So, below are the ten best hybrid SUVs you can buy in 2026 for under $40,000.

2026 Kia Niro Hybrid

MSRP: $27,390 | The Hybrid SUV Bargain Nobody Saw Coming

As one of the most budget-friendly hybrid SUVs you can buy, the 2026 Kia Niro Hybrid is both fuel-efficient and roomy. You get a maximum cargo capacity of 63.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, and 22.8 cubic feet behind the second row. Starting prices for the 2026 Niro Hybrid are $27,390, and you can get it in four trims: the LX, the EX, the SX, and the SX Touring. It has the following price breakdown.

There is just one powertrain option for the 2026 Kia Niro Hybrid: an inline-four mated to a 32-kW motor and a 1.32-kWh battery. Horsepower and torque output aren’t the aim of the game here, but fuel economy is. The 2026 lineup has the following specifications.

According to FuelEconomy.gov, the 2026 Niro Hybrid can achieve 53 combined mpg. That translates to 53 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway, which will cost you an estimated $1,150 a year for gas. That also equals an estimated $5,250 in fuel savings over five years compared to the average modern vehicle.

While the price is low, you aren’t left wanting. The LX gets an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and automatic climate control. There is a step-up inside the EX, with dual 10.25-inch screens, navigation, and wireless charging. The SX Touring leans into comfort, with SynTex seating and a power driver’s seat, and the top-trim SX Touring gets ventilated front seats, a HUD, and a Harman Kardon audio rig.

As the larger sibling to the Niro Hybrid, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid is also available at a low price and offers a lot of modern-day bang for your buck. The new Sportage Hybrid is available as the LX, the S, the EX, the X-Line, and the SX Prestige; it has the following trim and price breakdown.

If you opt for FWD, you get 42 combined mpg (41 mpg city/44 mpg highway). This is estimated to cost you between $1,500 and $1,800 a year for gas. Powertrain specs are as follows.

2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

MSRP: $31,900 | The Hybrid SUV Benchmark Gets Better

The Toyota RAV4 is a mainstay in the U.S. SUV market, and now that it is purely a hybrid SUV here, it just means you get all the benefits of owning a RAV4 (reliability, ease of use, etc.) alongside low gas prices. FuelEconomy.gov says the 2026 RAV4 can achieve between 38 and 43 combined mpg, which is estimated to cost you between $1,450 and $1,650 a year for gas.

As we have seen in the past, the RAV4 sets standards high. You get a maximum cargo capacity of 70.4 cubic feet, 41 inches of front legroom, 37.8 inches of rear legroom, a decent reliability record (it is rated 77 out of 100 on J.D. Power), and low prices all-around. This year’s RAV4 full lineup has the following price breakdown.

There is just one powertrain option for the 2026 RAV4: a 2.5-liter inline-four paired with a hybrid rig, available with either a front-wheel drive layout or an all-wheel drive one. There is a slight horsepower difference between the FWD and AWD models, with the following specs.

Despite the low costs, in typical Toyota fashion, you get a well-appointed ride. The LE gets a 10.5-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0. If you want a sportier touch, the SE has unique styling, while the Limited offers near-luxury levels at a low price. It comes equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a nine-speaker JBL audio system, heated and ventilated seats, and dual wireless charging pads.

2026 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

MSRP: $32,450 | The Hybrid SUV That Nails The Basics

The 2026 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is one of those compact hybrid SUVs that just gets it right at a sensible price. It only measures in at 182.7 inches by 73.4 inches, yet you still get 74.5 cubic feet of storage space, 41.4 inches of front legroom, and 41.3 inches of rear legroom. The pricing breakdown for the new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid is as follows.

What makes the new Tucson Hybrid stand out is that all trims come equipped with the HTRAC AWD system as standard. We wouldn’t recommend a lot of deep-dirt driving with it, but it certainly shores up wet-weather driving. Despite the AWD system, the Tucson Hybrid can achieve between 37 and 38 mpg in the city and between 36 and 38 mpg on the highway.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard fare, so is wireless phone connectivity, while higher trims get you 18-inch alloys, heated front seats, ambient lighting, an optional 12.3-inch digital cluster, leatherette-trimmed seats, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and leather-trimmed seats in the top trim.

For a small hybrid SUV, it does a huge amount right. This is apparent from the 81 out of 100 overall rating on J.D. Power and the 4.1 out of 5 overall rating on Kelley Blue Book.

2026 Ford Escape Hybrid

With an overall owner rating on Kelley Blue Book of 3.8 out of 5 and a 65% recommendation rating, the 2026 Ford Escape Hybrid deserves more attention than it gets. Starting prices are reasonable at $33,890, and top-end prices are still relatively affordable at $37,210.

The new Ford Escape Hybrid lineup is available with one hybrid powertrain and one plug-in setup, with the following specifications (there are also two EcoBoost turbo options, but they aren’t hybrid).

The Escape HEV is available with AWD only, and can achieve 39 combined mpg (42 mpg city/36 mpg highway), while the Escape PHEV is available with FWD, but can achieve a much more impressive 101 MPGe. For the HEV model, it is estimated to cost $1,600 a year for gas, while the PHEV model will cost you an estimated $1,050 for gas and electricity each year.

The Escape trims that are available with the standard hybrid powertrain are the ST-Line ($33,890), the Platinum ($36,215), and the ST-Line Elite ($37,210). There is just one option for the PHEV rig, and it is called the Escape Plug-In Hybrid, which has a starting price of $35,400.

Both the hybrid and plug-in hybrid get a decent amount of space with the seats folded down, at 60.8 cubic feet, while an impressive passenger volume of 102.2 cubic feet, 42.4 inches of front legroom, and 38.9 inches of rear legroom make it a relatively spacious place to be.

2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid

Combining affordable luxury with AWD usability, the new CX-50 Hybrid is the premium-feeling alternative to the usual Hondas and Toyotas. The available trims for this year’s lineup are the Hybrid Preferred, the Hybrid Premium, and the Hybrid Premium Plus, with prices ranging from $34,750 to $40,450.

All trims get the same powertrain and Mazda’s Intelligent Electronic All-Wheel Drive system, which is front-wheel biased when you are driving normally, but can generate torque at the back if the system detects any slippage. It has the powertrain specifications.

All trims get a very tight fit and finish, and despite the low prices, you get a 10.25-inch touchscreen in the base-level model to accompany a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, wireless charging, and a power tailgate. The Hybrid Premium has ventilated front seats, a power passenger seat, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system, while the top-tier has heated rear seats, an Active Driving Display, and a heated steering wheel.

2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid

The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid is available in four trims: the Sport Hybrid, the TrailSport Hybrid, the Sport-L Hybrid, and the Sport Touring Hybrid. Starting prices for the base model are low at $35,630, and top-end prices stretch up to $42,550. There is just one powertrain option, but it succeeds in helping the more off-road-looking TrailSport Hybrid achieve 35 combined mpg, the AWD models achieve 37 combined mpg, and the FWD models achieve 40 combined mpg.

The Honda CR-V Hybrid’s sole powertrain option is a 2.5-liter inline-four paired with a two-motor system. It has the following specifications.

Horsepower may be slightly lower than some of its similarly priced rivals, and towing capacity is just 1,000 pounds, but you do get 76.5 cubic feet of storage space, a 1,106-pound payload capacity, and a nine-inch touchscreen as standard. Maybe the main pro, though, is that you also benefit from Honda-grade reliability.

According to J.D. Power reliability ratings, the new CR-V Hybrid gets 83 out of 100 for dependability, while owners have rated it 3.8 out of 5 for reliability on Kelley Blue Book. Plus, RepairPal says it will only cost you $407 a year to maintain, which makes it much cheaper than the market average of $652.

2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid

MSRP: $36,400 | Three Rows, Hybrid Power, Zero Compromises

For those looking for a boxy three-row SUV for less than $40,000, there are few better options than the 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbo-four mated to a 44.2-kW motor that, combined, kicks out 231 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque.

There is plenty of legroom in the first two rows, at 44.4 inches and up to 42.3 inches, respectively. Third-row legroom may be a little cramped for taller occupants, at 30 inches, but for those seeking a three-row family hybrid SUV that can achieve up to 36 combined mpg (FWD) and tow up to 2,000 pounds, this is the model to choose.

There are four trims of the new Santa Fe Hybrid: the SE, the SEL, the Limited, and the Calligraphy. Prices range from $36,400 for the base trim to $48,700 for the very posh Calligraphy. Even the SE feels far from basic, though, and you get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a hands-free smart liftgate as standard. The SEL gets heated front seats, H-Tex upholstery, wireless charging, and Hyundai Digital Key.

Limited models are equipped with leather seats, a Bose 12-speaker audio rig, dual wireless chargers, a panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, and a Surround View Monitor. Right at the top is the Hybrid Calligraphy, which is kitted with a HUD and Nappa leather upholstery.

The 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid is the family SUV that isn’t getting enough airtime, though it deserves far more attention. There are only two trims of the new Sorento Hybrid: the EX and the X-Line SX Prestige, with starting prices of $38,890 and $47,190, respectively. So, to keep prices under $40,000, you’ll have to opt for the EX.

You aren’t missing out, though; the EX is equipped with a Smart Power Liftgate, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, power front seats, wireless phone connectivity, and available second-row captain’s chairs. You also get a generous 75.5 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded down.

There is just one powertrain option for the 2026 Kia Sorento Hybrid, which has the following specifications.

The new Sorento Hybrid can achieve 37 combined mpg when you opt for front-wheel drive, and 34 combined mpg if you opt for the Torque-Vectoring All-Wheel Drive system. The new Sorento is also a three-row SUV, and, while there are three rows, like the Santa Fe Hybrid, the third row may be a little cramped for taller people. It has the following legroom measurements.

2026 Kia Sportage Plug-In Hybrid

MSRP: $40,490 | Plug-In Hybrid SUV That Makes Electrified Life Easy

Kia

With a starting price of $40,490, the new Sportage PHEV may be just over the $40K limit, but it isn’t by much, and it is especially affordable to run, up there with some of the best hybrid SUVs this year. This is mainly due to the powertrain it has; under the hood is a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four paired with a 72-kW motor.

FuelEconomy.gov says the 2026 Kia Sportage PHEV can achieve 74 MPGe, provide a gas tank range of 470 miles, and cost you an estimated $1,350 for gas and electricity a year. That translates to potential savings of up to $4,250 on gas over five years compared to the average modern vehicle.

There are two trims of the new Sportage PHEV: the X-Line and the X-Line Prestige. Both the first and second rows offer good legroom, at 41.4 inches and 39.5 inches, respectively, and you get a maximum cargo capacity of 65.5 cubic feet. So, it is a very handy and spacious family SUV to own.

The X-Line is equipped as standard with Kia’s curved dual 12.3-inch display, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, and all-wheel drive with Terrain Mode. Then there is the X-Line Prestige; it does cost $47,190, but it is near luxury, with a Harman Kardon audio rig, a 10-inch HUD, Blind-Spot View Monitor, and quilted SynTex upholstery.
