The Yamaha YZF-R9 returns for 2027 as the middle ground between the YZF-R7 and YZF-R1, combining Yamaha’s familiar 890cc three-cylinder engine with a dedicated aluminum supersport chassis and a serious electronics package. It remains the brand’s supersport answer for riders who want substantially more performance and track-focused hardware than the R7 provides without stepping all the way up to Yamaha’s liter-class superbike.

Pricing stays at $12,499, placing the R9 $3,100 above the parallel-twin-powered YZF-R7 while remaining $6,700 below the inline-4-propelled YZF-R1 base model. For 2027, Yamaha lists Team Yamaha Blue and Raven finishes in the U.S. The mechanical specification carries over, with the same 430-pound wet weight, 32.7-inch seat height, 55.9-inch wheelbase, and 3.7-gallon fuel tank as the previous model year.

The CP3 Triple Gets A Supersport Job Description

Yamaha

At the center of the R9 is Yamaha’s 890cc liquid-cooled, double overhead camshaft (DOHC) inline 3-cylinder, the same basic CP3 engine architecture used in the naked MT-09 and sport-touring Tracer 9 platforms. Here, however, Yamaha gives it its own ECU calibration and gearing to suit the R9’s supersport role rather than simply transplanting the powertrain unchanged from one of its naked bikes.

The engine uses a 78.0mm bore and 62.1mm stroke with an 11.5:1 compression ratio, forged pistons, forged connecting rods, offset cylinders, and direct-plated cylinder bores. Yamaha’s European specifications rate it at 117 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and approximately 68.6 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm. U.S. Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA doesn’t publish claimed performance figures, but the engine specification itself is otherwise shared across markets.

Power reaches the rear wheel through a six-speed transmission and an assist-and-slipper wet clutch. A third-generation bidirectional quickshifter allows clutchless upshifts and downshifts during both acceleration and deceleration, which is becoming increasingly expected on a motorcycle aimed as squarely at track-day riders as this one.

The Chassis Is Where The R9 Separates Itself

The R9 isn’t an MT-09 wearing fairings. Yamaha developed a dedicated Deltabox-style gravity-cast aluminum frame, which it describes as the lightest aluminum frame it has fitted to a supersport model. The complete motorcycle weighs 430 pounds wet, with a relatively compact 55.9-inch wheelbase, 22.6-degree rake, and 3.7 inches of trail. Ground clearance measures 5.5 inches.

Suspension hardware backs up that sporty positioning. The front uses a 43mm inverted KYB fork offering preload, rebound, and separate high- and low-speed compression adjustment, along with 4.7 inches of travel. The KYB rear shock is similarly adjustable for preload, rebound, and high- and low-speed compression, with 4.6 inches of travel. That’s considerably more tuning flexibility than you’d expect from a basic middleweight street bike.

Yamaha

Stopping hardware consists of twin 320mm front discs paired with Brembo Stylema monoblock calipers and a radial master cylinder. A 220mm disc handles braking at the rear. Anti-lock braking system (ABS) comes standard, while Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tires measure 120/70ZR17 up front and 180/55ZR17 at the back.

Electronics Borrow Heavily From Yamaha’s Superbike Playbook

Yamaha

A six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) sits at the center of the R9’s rider-aid package. Using IMU and wheel-speed data, the bike features lean-sensitive traction control with nine intervention levels, three-level slide control, three-level wheelie control, lean-sensitive braking intervention, adjustable engine braking, and rear-wheel back-slip regulation.

Launch control is included, along with adjustable power delivery, multiple configurable riding modes, and cruise control that can be activated from 25 miles per hour in third gear or higher. Would-be owners will also find a five-inch full-color TFT display with smartphone connectivity, plus a configurable speed limiter and updated handlebar switches for navigating the bike’s settings.

Yamaha

Aerodynamics are another part of the equation. Yamaha says the R9 is the most aerodynamic production motorcycle it has built, with functional front winglets incorporated into the fairing. The riding position is unmistakably supersport, although Yamaha has deliberately kept the seat at 32.7 inches and designed the cockpit with a relatively short reach to the clip-ons.

The R9 Remains Yamaha’s Middleweight Heavy Hitter

Yamaha

For 2027, the Yamaha YZF-R9 continues to occupy a space that barely existed in Yamaha’s range a few years ago. The YZF-R7 remains the more affordable twin-cylinder sportbike at $9,399, while the $19,199 YZF-R1 sits considerably higher with liter-bike performance and pricing. The R9 lands between them at $12,499 with a three-cylinder engine, adjustable suspension, Brembo front brakes, and IMU-supported electronics.

That positioning makes its purpose fairly clear. The R9 is aimed at riders who want a dedicated supersport chassis and sophisticated electronics without committing to a 1,000cc superbike. Nothing fundamental has changed for 2027, but given that Yamaha introduced the platform in 2025, the formula remains current: proven CP3 power, serious chassis hardware, and a price positioned well below the company’s flagship R1.
