For some time now, when people think of a large, comfortable, opulent, and plush American SUV, they’re thinking about a Cadillac Escalade. Since they were introduced to the market back in 1999, they have provided maybe the stiffest competition to the Lincoln Navigator in terms of large luxury.

The newest iteration of the Escalade still commands a lot of the road; it is still plush; it always turns heads; and celebrities are still opting for it as a status symbol. However, while Jeep is not always revered for its ultra-luxury offerings, the all-American powerhouse marque has carried out a major upgrade and facelift of its three-row SUV, and it is shaking up the market.

Luxury SUVs Are Entering A New Era

For decades, the recipe for a good full-size luxury SUV was pretty simple: build something massive, cover it in chrome, equip the largest possible engine , and make sure it dominates every parking lot it goes into. When these kinds of SUVs were being turned out, we wanted a presence above most things, and American brands became very good at that.

Today, though, the luxury SUV market is evolving, and size alone doesn’t cut it anymore. For those of us with the budget for something like a new Escalade, which this year has a starting price of $91,100 , a commanding road presence and high-end materials are one thing, but so are cutting-edge tech, genuinely refined rides, and interiors that are closer to private lounges than SUV cabins.

Then there is fuel efficiency and modern powertrains. It is not uncommon to find a 2014 Lincoln Navigator equipped with a V8 only offering 15 or 16 combined mpg on a good day. Today, models like the Duramax turbo-diesel-equipped Tahoe can achieve 22 to 23 combined mpg, while the new i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Sequoia can achieve up to 22 combined mpg, both without losing out on any of the finery and power that make them luxury models.

Buyers Want More Than Just Chrome And Horsepower

The purpose of an SUV, full-size and luxury or not, has changed in the last couple of decades. They used to be utility vehicles that were used for everything from going camping and driving through the dirt to the school run. Some of them still are today, but the focus on on-road engagement, comfort, and refinement has overtaken the need for outright power and towing figures.

This means that models like the Sequoia, which used to be a very utilitarian SUV when it was released, now get all the creature comforts that you’d once only find in a posh sedan. Massaging seats, large displays, advanced sound insulation, and hands-free driving tech are just as important as V8 performance.

What has changed the most in the SUV market, luxury and not, is their usage. SUVs are being used more regularly on the road now than ever before, so even the big ones with body-on-frame construction have to have good manners in traffic and when driving through town. For the SUV market, it is not enough anymore just to build something that can tackle the dunes, but they also have to behave when they join the tarmac again and still provide a comfortable ride to work.

The Rules Are Changing At The Top End Of The Market

The upper echelon that is the luxury SUV market has also become very competitive. Traditional leaders like Cadillac, BMW, Audi, and Lincoln can’t rely on brand prestige or reputation anymore. Newer luxury brands like Infiniti offer a lot of perceived value for money with their flagship QX80; some still don’t see Lexus as the luxury powerhouse that it should be; Acura produces some very well-priced luxury SUVs like the MDX; and Genesis brings modern Korean reliability with European-grade styling.

This has forced more traditional marques to change tack, and a major design shift has followed, both in terms of exterior and interior design and in what is offered. For us, it is great news; it means the luxury SUV benchmark is rising rapidly, but for brands, it is harder and more competitive than ever to keep up with changing expectations. That means there are more redesigns, better quality builds, more options, and more versatility to what a luxury SUV can do today.

The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Means Business

The Jeep Wagoneer nameplate stretches all the way back to 1963, when it was a solid 4×4 that bridged the gap between capability and comfort. In ’84, it was reintroduced as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer with leather upholstery, fancy interiors, and better quality road manners, and in 1991, we saw the last examples of SJ platform models roll off the production line. The name was shelved until 2022, when Jeep brought it back as a bona-fide full-size luxury SUV. We are now in the fourth generation, and the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has hit the market post-refresh and facelift.

Bold Updates Give It More Presence Than Ever

While the Grand Wagoneer was never a subtle SUV, Jeep’s 2026 refresh gives it a far more modern and sophisticated presence than it has ever had. The biggest changes are from the A-pillar forward, where a redesigned front end gets a more upright stance, slimmer LED lights, and a more modern version of Jeep’s iconic seven-slot grille. There are no chrome accents at all now on the Grand Wagoneer; you get restyled taillights, new colors are available both inside and out, and more features have been added to the lower-tier grades.

It still has the imposing dimensions of a full-size flagship SUV (216.1 inches x 83.6 inches x 79.8 inches), but it now carries a far more streamlined look about it that sets it apart from some of the other massive SUVs on the market. There are also new wheel designs, updated trim options, a new powertrain offering, and maybe most importantly, for those of you who want something a bit different from the road-only models out there, some proper off-road chops.

Luxury And Capability Are No Longer A Compromise

Thankfully, the SUV market has come a long way since luxury SUVs just meant that they were very comfortable and nice to be on the road, and the best off-road SUVs were only really any good in the mud. The new Grand Wagoneer is a prime example of that; Jeep has backed up the new look and refined build with its expertise in off-road capability.

The Grand Wagoneer gets a body-on-frame chassis, standard four-wheel drive (on all trims except the base trim), an available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, and Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management system. If you go for the air suspension, you get up to 10 inches of ground clearance, while a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds (when you fit the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package and opt for the 3.92 axle ratio) means that a spot of overlanding is well within its wheelhouse.

At the same time, the interior is designed to show up some of the market’s more prestigious badges. Available are 24-way power-adjustable front seats with massage function, a 23-speaker McIntosh Reference audio system, four-zone climate control, and an expansive total screen area spread across the dashboard.

Front passengers get their own display; rear passengers can also get their own display, while real walnut wood trim, metal accents, power-folding rear seats, and generous cargo space with the rear seats folded down make it an exceptionally well-rounded luxury SUV. We have praised the new Lexus GX for similar reasons lately, so this Grand Wagoneer refresh really has ticked a lot of boxes.

Why The New Grand Wagoneer Is Shaking Up The Market

Jeep

It is large, capable off-road, and impressively appointed, so what is so different about the new Grand Wagoneer that makes it a real thorn in the side of the full-size, three-row luxury SUV market? Chiefly, it is its starting price. At a base-model starting price of just under $65,000, you’d be forgiven for thinking you aren’t getting much.

However, even the base model gets a 12.3-inch instrument cluster paired with a 12-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen. As mentioned, your front-seat passenger gets a 10.25-inch interactive display, while Palermo leather-trimmed seats, soft-touch surfaces, heated and ventilated front seats, and a 19-speaker audio rig are included as standard fare. To put that into perspective, some of its closest rivals have the following starting prices.

For everything you get at this price point, we should consider calling this Jeep a value-for-money luxury model alongside the likes of the Sequoia, which has a starting price of $65,025.

New Electrified Powertrain Changes Everything

Then there are the powertrain options. Since the rebirth of the Grand Wagoneer in 2022, Hurricane inline-sixes have been equipped. The 2025 model is equipped with a 540-horsepower HO 3.0-liter inline-six, which can accelerate it to 60 mph in as little as 4.7 seconds. This year, the Grand Wagoneer gets the same base engine as the 2025 Wagoneer (which has now been dropped); it has the following specifications.

Spec

2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Engine

3.0-Liter Twin Turbocharged Hurricane Inline-Six

Transmission

Eight-Speed Automatic

Horsepower

420 hp

Torque

468 lb-ft

However, Jeep has also revealed that later in 2026, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV (Range Extended Electric Vehicle) will become available, using a Pentastar V6 as a generator to charge a battery and featuring dual motors (one at each axle). It is expected to have the following specifications.

Spec

2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV

Engine

3.6-Liter V6 w/ Dual Motors & 92 kWh Battery

Combined Horsepower

647 hp

Combined Torque

620 lb-ft

Jeep says that the new GW REEV is neither a hybrid nor a full EV, but a gap bridge between the two. Jeep also says that with a full tank of gas, you’ll get 500 miles from it, while the all-electric range is over 100 miles. If it is as good as it sounds, it will truly be an SUV that pushes full-size models into a new era.

Grand Wagoneer Rivals Have Something To Worry About

Jeep

The simplified lineup of the Grand Wagoneer, its low starting price for its breed, and its real-life usability do make it a real threat to the likes of Lincoln, Cadillac, and the European marques that for so long have led the full-size luxury market. Combining true-luxury interiors, a potent engine, strong towing capability, a new design that looks considerably more modern than some other models out there, and the introduction of a potentially market-changing model later this year gives the segment good reason to raise its standards. The 2026 Escalade is available as the IQ, which gets a 465-mile range, 4.7-second 0–60 mph times, and can carry up to seven people.

However, the new Cadillac IQ has a starting price of $127,405, while the new REEV is expected to cost between $75,000 and $100,000+. It will still carry up to eight people and offer all the luxury features that the new gas-powered Grand Wagoneer gets. Combined, the whole new Grand Wagoneer lineup is going to take a lot of beating in terms of value for money and what you can actually do with it.

10 Luxury SUVs That Are Just As Reliable As Economy Cars

Are luxury SUVs just as reliable as some of the most popular economy cars? Here are ten models that answer with a “yes.”

The 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Is The New Luxury SUV Benchmark

Jeep

It doesn’t just look modern and cost a lot less than some of its competitors, but it is also very spacious inside, and for a three-row SUV, you actually get a lot of room in the third row. It has a total passenger volume of 179 cubic feet; 28.4 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row, 70.8 cubic feet behind the second row, and a total cargo capacity of 94.2 cubic feet. Interior dimensions of the 2026 Grand Wagoneer are as follows.

Third Row

36.6 Inches

You can also get the Grand Wagoneer L; it has a starting price of just under $67,000 and a longer wheelbase (130-inch vs. 123-inch), which opens up significantly more cargo capacity across all three rows, as follows.

Cargo Capacity

Behind Third Row

42.6 Cubic Feet

Behind Second Row

88.8 Cubic Feet

Maximum Cargo Capacity

116.7 Cubic Feet

It may not have the same luxurious prestige as Cadillac, and FuelEconomy.govsaysthat it can only achieve between 18 and 19 combined mpg, costing between $3,300 and $3,450 a year for gas, but the new Grand Wagoneer delivers what is expected from a modern, comfortable, and usable three-row SUV.

Neither the new Escalade nor Grand Wagoneer has the most exciting owner reviews on Kelley Blue Book, with the Escalade getting 3.7 out of 5 overall and the Grand Wagoneer getting 3.4 out of 5, but the price difference between the two is stark.

Shot of 2026 Jeep Wagoneer display in second row
Jeep

When we think about value for money in the luxury market, we tend to look at Asian models. However, this new Grand Wagoneer has to be seen as a new benchmark for the three-row luxury SUV segment. Prices do climb as you get toward the higher trims, but even at the entry point, the Grand Wagoneer delivers a level of technology, space, capability, and premium equipment that few rivals can match for the price.

This is why the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is such a strong contender against the Escalade, Navigator, and European models like the X7 and GLS; Jeep doesn’t try to chase these models, but combines what it has proved it can do off-road for so long while undercutting them all on price for genuine on-road luxury.
