Wind noise becomes exhausting, cramped ergonomics start hurting, luggage space disappears, and every fuel or meal stop makes it harder to climb back aboard. A motorcycle can be fast and exciting, but neither quality necessarily makes it enjoyable after several hundred miles. A wide, well-padded saddle certainly helps, but it can’t compensate for the rest of a poorly considered motorcycle. It must isolate occupants from broken pavement without allowing the chassis to float or wallow when the road becomes interesting. Strong brakes, predictable steering, and appropriate tire sizes keep the motorcycle manageable despite its bulk. Its centerpiece is a liquid-cooled 1,833cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox (optional DCT is available), shaft final drive, throttle-by-wire control, and a reverse function.
The Tour Automatic DCT costs $30,500 and replaces the conventional gearbox with Honda’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It also adds Walking Mode for low-speed forward and reverse movement. The range-topping Gold Wing Tour Airbag Automatic DCT costs $33,800 and combines the DCT equipment with a motorcycle airbag system. The manual model weighs 845 pounds, the standard DCT weighs 847 pounds, and the airbag version comes in at 856 pounds with full fluids and fuel.
Regardless of transmission, the Gold Wing Tour uses a double-wishbone front suspension offering 4.3 inches of travel. At the rear, a Pro Arm single-sided swingarm works with a Pro-Link single shock and provides 4.1 inches of travel. Electronic rear preload adjustment allows the motorcycle to compensate for a passenger and luggage, while the unusual front-end layout helps separate steering movement from suspension action and allows the engine and occupants to sit farther forward.
The six-cylinder engine is arranged horizontally, placing three cylinders on each side of the motorcycle. That layout keeps a substantial portion of the engine’s mass low in the chassis, which helps the Gold Wing Tour remain balanced despite its considerable curb weight. The engine produces around 125 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, which, on paper, may not sound like much. That said, outright numbers are not really the point. Smooth, immediate delivery is the quality that makes the engine so well suited to distance.
Its even firing character and low vibration reduce strain during sustained cruising, while the broad delivery means the rider doesn’t have to chase revs when passing traffic or climbing with a passenger aboard. Sixth gear in the manual is an overdrive ratio intended to settle the engine at highway speeds. Riders choosing the DCT can let the motorcycle handle shifts automatically or take manual control, removing clutch work without sacrificing the ability to choose gears.
Mechanical refinement is only one part of the package. The Gold Wing Tour surrounds its occupants with full-coverage bodywork, an electrically adjustable windscreen, cruise control, heated grips, and heated rider and passenger seats. Four selectable ride modes alter throttle response and other electronic settings, allowing the motorcycle to adapt to changing conditions without asking the rider to manage every variable manually.
Its infotainment system provides navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, audio controls, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Key information such as speed, fuel level, ride mode, outside temperature, and cruise-control status appears through the instrument display. The smart key also operates the luggage locks, reducing the need to dig through pockets each time the rider wants to open or secure a compartment.
Storage is divided between two integrated saddlebags offering a combined 60 liters and a 61-liter rear trunk large enough to accommodate two full-face helmets in typical circumstances. That produces 121 liters of total capacity, giving two people enough space for a proper trip without covering the motorcycle in improvised luggage. The trunk also serves as a substantial passenger backrest, making the rear seat something more than an afterthought.
None of this turns the Gold Wing Tour into a small or budget-friendly motorcycle. Even the entry version costs $30,275 once Honda’s destination charge is included, before taxes, registration, accessories, or dealer fees. Its 845-pound curb weight also demands respect when the engine is off. Reverse assistance doesn’t erase physics, but it prevents one of touring’s least glamorous moments from becoming a daily wrestling match.
That may be the Gold Wing Tour’s greatest luxury. It doesn’t try to make the rider forget that they’re traveling by motorcycle. Instead, it removes enough fatigue, discomfort, and unnecessary work to let them enjoy more of the road. Its comfort doesn’t come from one oversized seat or a collection of gadgets. It comes from a complete system designed so that, after hundreds of miles, climbing back aboard still sounds better than calling it a day.
