Big-mile motorcycles tend to reveal their priorities pretty quickly if you think about it. One camp gives you a huge V-twin and acres of bodywork, all wrapped around the relaxed attitude America made famous. The other answers with sophisticated electronics that can make a luxury tourer feel strangely clever.

Finding both personalities in one machine isn’t impossible, but it’s definitely harder. Yet one heavyweight from the USA decided people shouldn’t have to choose between theater and technology.

Harley Character And BMW Tech Rarely Share A Garage

The traditional American touring motorcycle has an impossibly straightforward brief. Give the rider a big engine with plenty of shove, add enough luggage to make an airline nervous, and point the whole thing toward a distant state line. Harley-Davidson has spent decades making that formula feel like its natural habitat.

BMW‘s big tourers approach the same problem from another direction. Its premium touring motorcycles have helped make sophisticated electronics and chassis technology pretty much expected at the expensive end of the market. The BMW K 1600 family, in particular, showed that a very large motorcycle could mix luxury with an unexpectedly serious appetite for corners.

That leaves an obvious gap in the North American motorcycle market. People attracted to traditional American V-twin touring character might also want modern rider aids and more responsive handling without abandoning the laid-back full-dresser experience. Building that motorcycle is harder than simply adding a touchscreen to a bagger and declaring the future has arrived.

One American Tourer Refused To Pick A Side

This particular tourer’s approach started with an engine that was already unusual by traditional American standards. Its original 108 cubic-inches was a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin making a claimed 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. That’s still unmistakably big-twin territory, but the engine was designed to rev more eagerly than the old-school air-cooled V-twin formula suggests.

The chassis followed the same route. A cast-aluminum frame provided the foundation, with a 43-mm inverted fork at the front and powerful Brembo brakes tasked with slowing the whole operation down. A chassis-mounted fairing kept the giant front bodywork separate from the steering, an especially useful idea once the motorcycle was hustling down something more entertaining than an arrow-straight interstate.

A Little Bit Of Both

Then came the fun bit: the tech. Lean-sensitive ABS and traction control worked in the background, while electronic rear-preload adjustment could account for passengers and luggage without forcing the owner to reach for tools. Ride modes changed the engine’s responses, and a 7-inch touchscreen handled navigation and even Apple CarPlay.

And yet none of that turned it into a tall European-style touring motorcycle. The low seat and generous floorboards were straight out of the American bagger playbook, while hard luggage and a huge fairing made its long-distance intentions impossible to miss. From the rider’s seat, it promised the sort of coast-to-coast comfort North American touring riders expect, only with considerably smarter machinery hiding underneath.

The Indian Pursuit Put Brains Behind The Brawn

In case you hadn’t pieced it together yet, the motorcycle is the Indian Pursuit, and the latest 2026 Indian Pursuit Dark Horse 112 pushes that original idea even further. Its PowerPlus 112 V-twin displaces, naturally, 112 cubic inches, or 1,834cc, and produces a claimed 126 hp with 133 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm.

Those numbers put the Indian Pursuit in an interesting place among heavyweight touring motorcycles. The PowerPlus 112 still delivers the low-rpm muscle that buyers expect from a large American V-twin, but liquid cooling and four-valve cylinder heads give it a noticeably more modern engineering brief. It doesn’t need to imitate a BMW K 1600 engine because the V-twin is exactly where much of the Pursuit’s personality comes from.

The electronics make the BMW comparison much easier to understand. The 2026 Pursuit Dark Horse 112 offers lean-sensitive ABS and traction control, Bike Hold Control, and electronically linked braking. Blind Spot Warning watches traffic alongside the motorcycle, while Tailgate Warning can alert the rider to a vehicle following too closely. Rear Collision Warning adds another layer of awareness when traffic approaches from behind.

Its 7-inch Ride Command touchscreen brings navigation and Apple CarPlay into the mix, while adaptive LED lighting is also available. On the whole, it’s a distinctly American luxury touring motorcycle that treats electronics as an integral part of the riding experience rather than something added simply to make the spec sheet longer.

Nearly Half A Ton Shouldn’t Move Like This

The 2026 Indian Pursuit Dark Horse 112 weighs a claimed 937 pounds ready to ride and measures 101.5 inches long. That’s a lot of motorcycle even by American touring standards. Park one beside a middleweight naked bike and the smaller machine starts looking like it came free with a cereal box.

Once moving, however, the Pursuit has always been more capable than its dimensions suggest. The original 912-pound version earned praise for neutral steering and its ability to handle winding roads without constantly reminding the rider how much machinery was involved. The wide handlebar provides plenty of leverage, while the PowerPlus V-twin is happy to carry more revs than its huge displacement might lead you to expect.

The Weight Means Its Well-Equipped

As any rider would attest, that matters in the USA, where a serious touring motorcycle can encounter hundreds of freeway miles before reaching the road you actually bought it to enjoy. The aluminum chassis and strong Brembo braking hardware give the Pursuit enough dynamic ability to make that second part of the journey worthwhile. It still feels like a heavyweight American tourer, but it doesn’t insist that every corner be treated as an administrative inconvenience.

Electronic rear-preload adjustment is equally useful when the trip involves a passenger or packed luggage. Load information can be entered through the display rather than adjusted manually, while the electrically adjustable windshield lets the rider alter wind protection on the move. More than 36 gallons of storage on the current Pursuit takes care of the practical side of long-distance motorcycle touring, which becomes rather important somewhere around the third state line.

The Pursuit Has Kept Evolving Since 2022

The first Indian Pursuit arrived in 2022 with a clear target. Its 108ci PowerPlus made 122 hp and 128 lb-ft, and its chassis brought a more performance-minded feel to the American full-dress touring class. It gave people shopping for machines such as the Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited another V-twin option without simply recreating the same mechanical recipe.

The newer PowerPlus 112 moves those claimed figures to 126 hp and 133 lb-ft. The gains of 4 hp and 5 lb-ft are useful, but the bigger story is how much the surrounding motorcycle has developed. Traffic-awareness features such as Blind Spot Warning and Tailgate Warning build on the cornering electronics that helped establish the Pursuit as one of America’s more technically ambitious V-twin touring motorcycles.

More importantly, all that tech hasn’t erased what made the motorcycle appealing in the first place. The low stance and giant PowerPlus V-twin keep it firmly connected to North American touring culture. The Pursuit still looks completely at home outside a roadside diner after several hundred highway miles, which is arguably more important to its audience than looking impressive beside a software engineer’s laptop.
