Mercedes Redesigns Its Best-Selling GLA With AI, 408-Mile Range, And Sporty New Look
Mercedes-Benz pulled the wraps off the all-new 2028 GLA on July 29, 2026, and the redesign goes well beyond a facelift. The compact SUV — currently the brand’s best-selling model in the segment — gets a longer wheelbase, a striking illuminated grille on electric variants, and a completely reimagined interior anchored by an optional full-width MBUX Superscreen. It arrives at U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2027.
The powertrain story is equally ambitious. Two all-electric models offer up to 657 kilometers (WLTP) of range and 800-volt fast charging that can recover 270 km of range in as little as ten minutes. A new 48-volt hybrid rounds out the lineup for buyers who aren’t ready to go fully electric. Layered on top is an AI-powered virtual assistant that draws on ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google to hold natural, multi-part conversations — Mercedes says it responds like a well-informed friend rather than a voice-command system.
A Sportier Shape With More Room Inside
The new GLA sits 0.8 inches lower than its predecessor, and the wheelbase grows by 2.4 inches to 109.8 inches total. A wider rear track (+1.2 inches), muscular shoulders, and wheels positioned flush with the body give the SUV a noticeably more planted stance. The clean, surface-oriented exterior swaps the previous model’s busier lines for a minimalist look with full-width wheelarch trims and visual underguards front and rear.
Electric models get the brand’s new illuminated iconic grille — a first for any Mercedes compact. It features a chrome frame, an illuminated surround, and 608 backlit polycarbonate light points that can be animated to pulse in time with the selected soundscape. Hybrid models carry a star grille with 150 hot-stamped chrome stars and an illuminated LED surround. Buyers looking for extra attitude can opt for the new AMG Line Plus with Night Package — which adds a high-gloss black spoiler lip, exclusive 20-inch AMG wheels, red seatbelts, and contrast stitching — or the Night Edition, finished in MANUFAKTUR Cosmos Black Magno paint with black 20-inch aero wheels and Crystal White Pearl interior accents.
Electric Range And Fast Charging That Changes The Calculus
The 2028 GLA lineup includes two battery-electric models: the GLA 250+ Electric (268 hp) and the GLA 350 4MATIC Electric (349 hp). Both share an 85-kWh usable NMC battery. The top-spec 4MATIC hits 0–60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Peak DC fast charging reaches 320 kW at 800-volt stations, and a built-in DC converter allows charging at standard 400-volt stations as well.
The hybrid option pairs a newly developed 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 30-hp electric motor integrated directly into an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 48-volt lithium-ion battery with up to 1.3 kWh of usable capacity powers the motor. Under light city loads — technically, when less than 30 hp is needed — the hybrid can run on electricity alone. Efficient coasting with the drivetrain disengaged is also possible above 60 mph, and the system can recuperate up to 25 kW across all eight gears.
The MBUX Superscreen And An AI Assistant Worth Talking To
Inside, the previous sculptural dashboard gives way to a minimalist layout centered on the optional MBUX Superscreen — a single glass surface spanning the full dashboard width that houses a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central display, and a 14-inch front-passenger display. The passenger screen supports Disney+, Sony RIDEVU, and video conferencing apps. Real-time graphics are rendered by the Unity Game Engine on high-performance chips.
The MBUX Virtual Assistant is the headline tech feature. It uses a multi-agent AI approach combining ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google, giving it access to broad knowledge and short-term conversational memory — so follow-up questions work the way they would in a real conversation. Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent connects the assistant to Google Maps, enabling it to answer nuanced navigation questions and locate charging stations with real-time speed data. Standard driver assistance includes Distance Assist DISTRONIC, eight cameras, five radar sensors, and a control unit capable of 254 tera operations per second.
The longer wheelbase translates directly into usable space: front passengers gain 0.3 inches of legroom, rear passengers gain up to 1.5 inches, and maximum headroom increases by 0.9 inches front and rear. A standard fixed glass panoramic roof with infrared-reflective and LowE coatings adds to the airy feel; an optional SKY CONTROL version can switch between transparent and opaque in 10–20 milliseconds, with seven individually controlled segments.
Mercedes says the all-electric GLA reduces its carbon footprint across the full value chain by approximately 40 percent compared to the combustion-powered predecessor. The battery alone cuts CO₂ per cell by around 30 percent versus the previous generation, and roughly 40 percent of the aluminum used comes from electrolysis plants running on renewable energy — saving approximately 400 kg of CO₂ per vehicle. Recycled material content is more than four times higher than the outgoing model, including bumper substructures with nearly 55 percent recycled content and carpets woven entirely from recycled Econyl yarn.
The 2028 GLA is set to reach U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2027. Pricing has not yet been announced, but the combination of genuine range improvements, a fast-charging architecture that rivals dedicated EV platforms, and an AI assistant built on real conversational tech makes this one of the more substantive compact luxury SUV redesigns in recent memory. Buyers in the market for a BMW X2 or Audi Q3 will have a compelling new benchmark to consider.
