In most cases, buying a luxury sedan is the easy part. Most would think the higher price is the real pain point, but the reality is that’s only where the expenses start. Once the original warranty expires, routine maintenance becomes premium-priced maintenance, and one unexpected engine or transmission problem can quickly turn into a four-figure repair bill. That’s simply part of the deal with most luxury cars: you pay extra to buy them, and you continue paying extra to keep them on the road.

Genesis wasn’t always the luxury car brand it is today. Those with a keen memory will remember that Genesis was actually the name of a premium Hyundai nameplate in the late 2000s. Back then, Hyundai used Genesis to denote its premium offerings, like the Coupe and the Hyundai Genesis sedan.

And the Genesis G80 is a perfect example of just that. But first things first: the G80 isn’t just a Hyundai Sonata with some fancier leather and a different badge. The G80 is a full-fledged luxury sedan with the facts to back it up.

At 197 inches long, the G80 has the size and road presence expected from a midsize luxury sedan. It also offers two turbocharged engines, standard all-wheel drive, a cabin packed with premium materials, and just about every piece of technology its German rivals can throw at it.

It’s Got The Power

Take the engines, for example. The 2026 G80 offers two engines: a turbo 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. For reference, the BMW 530i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC both produce 255 horsepower. That gives the entry-level G80 a 45-horsepower advantage before we even reach the available V6.

The more powerful turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 ups power to 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic. It’s an impressive showing from the young luxury brand.

It’s Got (More) Affordability

The price difference tells a similar story. The entry-level 2026 G80 2.5T AWD starts at $58,450, while a base BMW 5 Series starts at $60,500. A base Mercedes E-class is even more expensive, starting at $63,900. In other words, the Genesis undercuts the comparable BMW by $2,000 and the Mercedes by nearly $5,500.

It’s Got The Goods To Rival The Germans

And it’s not like it’s bare-bones in the interior. It’s got all the goods a luxury car ought to have. The G80 comes standard with a 27-inch screen that houses both the gauge cluster and infotainment system, heated front and rear seats, a wireless charging pad, and a suite of safety features.

Higher trims add Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and an electronically controlled suspension that can prepare itself for upcoming road imperfections. Go for the 3.5T Sport Prestige and rear-wheel steering becomes available, while the Prestige Black adds floating center caps. Those are the kinds of details normally associated with Mercedes-Maybachs and Rolls-Royces.

Needless to say, the G80 is a true luxury sedan. And while the more expensive 3.5T Prestige Black does start at $79,350, it certainly has the goods to back it up.

The G80’s Warranty Goes Far Beyond Its German Rivals

Yet, the value of the Genesis G80 isn’t in fancy rear-wheel steering options and floating center caps; most people would just go to the big luxury brands for that. The brilliance of the G80 comes in how it offers luxury while keeping the G80 affordable to maintain.

A big way it does this is through its warranty. Hyundai’s famously generous warranty is passed on to the G80. This means that every new Genesis comes with a five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. More importantly, owners also get a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty covering major engine and transmission components. That’s twice the mileage that its German rivals offer, with the 5 Series and E-Class both coming with four-year/50,000-mile coverage.

Still, it helps to put these numbers in context. Let’s assume a driver travels 12,000 miles per year over the course of five years. Doing some simple math, that means they’ve traveled 60,000 miles, which is exactly the length of the G80’s bumper-to-bumper warranty. Meanwhile, the same driver in a BMW or a Mercedes would have exhausted its warranty by then.

Now, of course, that doesn’t suddenly mean brake pads, tires, and damage are free because of Genesis’ long warranty. What it does mean is that expensive components, like engine and transmission bits, are covered significantly longer on the G80 than its German rivals. While this doesn’t guarantee that the G80 will cost less to maintain, it certainly reduces long-term exposure to qualifying engine and transmission repair costs.

Genesis Covers More Than Unexpected Repairs

And while the warranty is already quite strong, Genesis does other things to make ownership more affordable and easier. Every new G80 includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. This free maintenance covers normal scheduled items such as engine oil and filter changes, tire rotations, and eligible air-filter replacements.

Genesis also throws in three years of Service Valet, which can arrange to have the G80 picked up from the owner’s home or office and taken to a participating retailer. And while it must be said that these services aren’t exclusive to Genesis, they certainly help boost the G80’s value. Owners are getting the same benefits and services offered by the established brands without the premium pricing.

The G80 Makes Luxury Ownership Easier To Justify

The G80 isn’t cheap, but it’s cheaper than its German rivals. It doesn’t have any groundbreaking features, but it’s got the same as its German rivals. So then, we’ve learned that the G80 blows the Germans out of the water when it comes to value. The entry-level model starts thousands below its BMW and Mercedes rivals while offering more standard power. Its complimentary maintenance matches BMW’s three-year/36,000-mile plan, and its warranty more than doubles its rivals’.

The Genesis G80 takes all the fuss out of having a premium sedan while keeping all the things owners want. Of course, it’s still going to suffer from luxury car depreciation and luxury car insurance, but so do its rivals. What its rivals don’t have is a lower cost of entry and a lower long-term financial risk.
