The legend has returned. The Ram 1500 TRX is back for the 2027 model year as the TRX SRT, and it is ripping up the performance pickup truck market, taking on the likes of the Ford Raptor R and the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2. It has a massive supercharged V8 under the hood, it can tackle desert runs, and it sprints like a sports car.

Despite its unreal prowess, the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT can actually be used as an everyday driver. This may surprise some out there, and while some performance trucks are good for one thing, this new Ram legend is an all-rounder.

High-Performance Trucks Have Never Been More Extreme

There was a time when buying a performance pickup truck meant accepting a few compromises. You got a little more power, firmer suspension, and maybe a louder exhaust, but underneath it all, it was still a work truck. That formula has changed beyond all recognition.

Today’s flagship trucks have become technological showcases, blending supercar-rivaling outputs with suspension systems capable of taking on the desert at triple-digit speeds, while offering interiors that wouldn’t look out of place in a luxury SUV.

The segment has become an arms race, with every major brand chasing a different version of the ultimate performance pickup truck. Chevrolet’s Silverado ZR2 favors precision, using Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, front and rear electronic locking diffs, and expertly tuned suspension to create something that delivers composure on trails and highways.

Ford, meanwhile, continues to set the benchmark with the F-150 Raptor, which comes equipped with long-travel suspension, FOX Live Valve dampers, and an advanced Terrain Management System that allows drivers to tackle most conditions.

Then there’s the new Raptor R, which gets a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 good for over 700 horsepower, yet still wraps all the performance hardware in a refined cabin equipped with premium materials and comfort features that belong in some of the best GTs.

High Price Tags Have Become The New Normal

While pickup trucks are still the lifeblood of the U.S. auto market and there is a huge range of price points, the high-end performance truck market is not a cheap place to shop. Take the 2026 Ford F-150 Raptor; it has a starting price of $81,800, while the Raptor R is even more expensive, at $113,525.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 is slightly cheaper, at $74,595, but considering the Silverado base model has a starting price of $38,345, it is obvious that you are paying a lot for the performance prowess. The same goes for the Ford Ranger Raptor; it has a starting price of just shy of $38,000, while the range-topping Ranger Raptor will cost at least $59,165 before any extras.

More Buyers Are Expecting Everyday Usability From Halo Trucks

The high prices need to be worth it. If you are paying so much more for a pickup truck that can perform over desert dunes and compete with sports cars, it still needs to be a truck. It still needs to be able to carry and tow, and remain comfortable around the work site, even when the 0–60 mph thrills become routine.

Models like the 2026 Ford Raptor R can still tow up to 8,700 pounds; it has a payload of 1,400 pounds and has 43.6 inches of legroom. Likewise, the Ranger Raptor can tow up to 5,510 pounds and has a 1,373-pound payload, while the new Silverado 1500 ZR2 has a payload of up to 1,550 pounds and can tow up to 8,800 pounds behind it.

The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT Is Surprisingly Easy To Live With

This is where the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT comes in: it is performance epitomized, and an exceptionally versatile truck to own. The TRX SRT is the sole model this year, and since the TRX’s short initial run from 2021 to 2024, it has returned with a more powerful engine, improved usability, and even more Raptor-rivaling off-road capability. Ram says the new 1500 TRX SRT has a starting price of $99,995 (plus a $2,795 destination fee), and while that is a substantial sum, it has been billed as the fastest production gas off-road pickup truck ever. While a title like “fastest production gas off-road pickup truck” doesn’t exactly suggest everyday usability, the TRX SRT is built differently.

The HEMI V8 Makes The 777-Horsepower Pickup Feel Effortless To Drive

Under the hood of the ’27 Ram TRX SRT is an iconic engine: a HEMI V8. Ram is using one of the most legendary engines for the new TRX SRT, and it certainly delivers. It has the following specifications.

Spec

2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT

Engine

6.2-Liter Supercharged V8

Transmission

Eight-Speed Automatic

Horsepower

777 hp

Torque

680 lb-ft

With the above specs, the TRX SRT leads its class in both horsepower output and torque output. Ram also says that the new TRX SRT can hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, 100 mph in 10 seconds, cover the quarter mile in 12.2 seconds, and top out at 118 mph. In short, it is a formidable machine.

Despite the immense power and speed of the supercharged HEMI V8, it can be driven calmly as well. Its 2.4-liter twin-screw supercharger delivers boost progressively rather than all at once, providing smooth, predictable power at low engine speeds before unleashing its full fury higher in the rev range.

Stellantis

The engine’s forged steel crankshaft, forged aluminum pistons, and heavy-duty connecting rods are designed to handle heavy loads, but they also contribute to durability for everyday driving.

Power is routed through a quick-shifting TorqueFlite 8HP95 eight-speed automatic, which keeps revs low when cruising on the highway, while the transmission’s closely spaced ratios mean the engine is never caught off boost when pushed hard.

Its Suspension Prioritizes Comfort As Much As Capability

The biggest surprise about the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT isn’t its 777 horsepower, but how effortlessly it has been engineered to feel manageable once the driver is behind the wheel. Yes, it is nearly 19 feet long, rides on massive 35-inch Wrangler Territory A/T tires, and gets 13 inches of suspension travel at the front and 14 inches at the rear, but it is designed to be able to do more than plow through dunes.

The TRX is equipped with Bilstein Black Hawk e² adaptive dampers that adjust continuously, resulting in a truck that irons out potholes with the composure of a smooth-riding luxury SUV, while remaining flat and controlled on twisty roads. A recent TopSpeed test drive of the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT sums it up nicely.

“More impressive than the power, however, is the fact that the truck feels rather flat when cornering on my normal twisty-road drive route. You’re not going to confuse the experience with wheeling a Lamborghini Temerario, but as far as sport trucks go, the on-pavement experience is exceptional.”

Of course, the suspension’s true strength lies off-road. With a reinforced frame, a track widened by eight inches over the standard Ram 1500, forged aluminum front control arms, and 11.8 inches of ground clearance, the TRX SRT can soak up deep ruts, landings from height, and rocky terrain at speeds that would leave most pickups crashing onto their bump stops.

The wider stance isn’t purely aesthetic; it reduces lateral load transfer when cornering aggressively. That, coupled with the massive tires, translates to substantial grip even as the suspension cycles through its considerable range of travel. Add impressive approach, breakover, and departure angles and 32 inches of water-fording capability to the mix, and the TRX SRT earns its reputation as a genuinely capable truck both on and off pavement. It has the following approach, breakover, and departure angles.

Approach Angle

Breakover Angle

Departure Angle

The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT Doesn’t Force You To Compromise

The off-road capability, the immense power output, the top speeds, and the remarkable sprint times all make the TRX SRT a strong contender for the best performance truck ever made.

Note: the fuel economy is worth acknowledging. With a FuelEconomy.gov estimated combined mpg rating of 12 (10 mpg city/14 mpg highway) and an annual gas cost of $6,500, it is not going to win any efficiency prizes. However, Ram says that the new TRX SRT can tow up to 8,100 pounds and has a payload capacity of between 911 and 1,200 pounds.

Supercharged Performance Doesn’t Come At The Expense Of Practicality

Supercars don’t generally offer anything beyond speed and track-ready prowess, but modern supertrucks like the TRX SRT offer it all. There is just one bed and cab configuration: a Crew Cab paired with a 5-foot-7-inch short bed. The Crew Cab offers four doors for easy entry and exit, and the bed can carry up to 53.9 cubic feet. The bed has the following dimensions.

It Can Handle The Daily Commute Just As Easily As Weekend Adventures

The cabin has been approached like a premium GT rather than a stripped-out performance special. A massive 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen sits up front, a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster faces the driver, and a 10.2-inch passenger display allows the front-seat passenger to access navigation, media, and performance pages without causing distraction. Numerous cameras around the body also assist with navigation on narrow roads.

The latest Uconnect software is responsive; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and OTA updates keep the system current. Comfort features include dual-zone climate control, configurable ambient lighting, and 12-way power front seats that are well-bolstered, heated, and ventilated.

The front seats are trimmed in premium leather with suede inserts, while multiple USB-C charging points, a premium 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and under-seat storage compartments ensure that cruising around town or along the highway is just as well catered for as spirited driving over rough roads and dunes.

What Makes The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT Worth The Money

There is no escaping the fact that the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT is expensive. With its $100,000+ price tag before any extras, it lives in a market once occupied by high-end European luxury SUVs and high-end sports cars. Even beyond the 777-horsepower V8, there is more to consider, and the TRX SRT is a very comprehensively engineered performance truck.

Unlike many high-performance vehicles that focus on one thing, the TRX has been developed by the engineers in the SRT workshop to be a very complete package, with virtually every component upgraded to handle what it can produce.

The Dana 60 solid rear axle with a full-floating hub design and an electronic locking diff capable of handling the immense torque generated by the supercharged HEMI means the TRX SRT can extract itself from most difficult situations. Up front sits an independent suspension system with a Dana M250 front axle, meaning you get the very precise steering expected of a modern performance vehicle while keeping the articulation needed for off-road fun.

Together with the BorgWarner full-time active transfer case, the system constantly manages torque distribution between the front and rear axles, so you get immense traction whether you’re accelerating out of a wet corner, climbing over loose rock, or charging across soft sand at speed. These aren’t just heavy-duty components, but purpose-built pieces of hardware designed to take a lot of abuse.

The new TRX SRT is reintroduced with more power (the 2024 model had 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque), and significantly more features, and that is what helps it distinguish itself from the rest of the high-performance off-road market. The Silverado ZR2 is one of the finest technical off-road trucks out there, while the F-150 Raptor R delivers incredible desert-running capability backed by supercharged performance. The Ram 1500 TRX SRT is the culmination of everything the segment has been working toward over the last decade.

It now sits in a class that can challenge performance cars for speed, boasts suspension sophistication that rivals many luxury SUVs, and carries off-road hardware that allows it to tackle terrain that would leave many other trucks stranded. In many ways, this is exactly what a modern halo pickup should be.

If you’re spending six figures on a truck, you want more than a toy that spends most of its time in the garage. The new TRX SRT delivers an impressive balance, and if any truck has the credentials to displace the Ford Raptor from its long-held throne, it is this one. It is cheaper than the Raptor R; it can tow, commute, cross the desert, and cover interstate miles in complete comfort.
