The former is a soft ice cream franchise launched in 1958 by British businessman Dominic Facchino; the latter was founded in 1962 by Bryan Whitby, a British engineer, after he developed a system for powering an ice cream van’s soft-serve machinery directly by the vehicle’s drive system.
