The Modern Harley That Depreciates Into A Serious Bargain

A $10,000-plus adventure-bike budget would have you shopping for the newer crop of middleweights or accepting some age and mileage to move into the top-shelf stuff. But right now, it can also buy you a low-mileage, 150 horsepower Harley with semi-active suspension. That does sound like the sort of used bike listing that needs an asterisk, yet the wider market picture gives you the same perspective. Five years have taken a sizable chunk out of one of Harley-Davidson’s most technically ambitious motorcycles, while the equipment that made it expensive remains.

Harley Resale Strength Does Not Automatically Come With The Badge

Traditional Harleys have a used-market buyer base that already knows what it wants. A Street Glide or Low Rider sells to riders who may have decided on a Harley before they start comparing individual bikes. And this is helped massively by familiar engines, a huge accessory ecosystem, and decades of model continuity. A large ADV has to win a much broader and more technical comparison against the likes of Triumph, BMW, KTM, Yamaha, Ducati, and others who have been in this space for ages.

That put Harley in unfamiliar territory in 2021. Its first adventure motorcycle also debuted a completely new liquid-cooled engine family, new electronics, and new chassis hardware. Early bikes then picked up software updates, while recalls covered the seat base and an instrument display that could fail to show required information during a freezing-temperature start. These issues were fixable, but they mattered to those considering a motorcycle with no previous generation behind it.

Buyers would, by default, consider a five-year-old BMW GS that has years of ownership experience and known trouble spots to draw from. We’re talking weeks out in the unknown with hardcore adventure riding, so reliability trumps weekend warrior needs. Harley’s first attempt had to build that confidence to compete in this category. That helps explain why its resale story looks so different from Harley’s established cruisers and tourers. The motorcycle did not become any less sophisticated as it aged, nor is its capability in question, but buyers had little to no reason to attach the usual Harley premium to it. Five years later, the consequences of that are sitting in used-bike listings.

The 2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special Is The One To Look For

The 2021 Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special started at $19,999 before options, positioning it squarely among premium large adventure bikes of the time. Current 2021 Special listings average about $12,537, which represents a drop of roughly 37 percent from its original MSRP. At that price, the 2021 Special has lost enough value to make used-condition and equipment differences matter now to a buyer shopping for an ADV with a budget that can get them the latest specced-out middleweights.

The spread of actual listings brings the depreciation into perspective. Current listings show how far values have fallen. Harley’s own used marketplace has included 2021 Specials with 1,620 miles at $10,999 and 6,519 miles at $11,800, while Cycle Trader listed a 2022 Special with just 1,957 miles for $9,999. Those are asking prices, but they show the market sentiment around the prices in comparison with the original $19,999 starting point.

There is also some choice in how much risk you want to accept. One H-D Certified 2021 Special was listed at $13,866 with a 12-month limited powertrain warranty. Harley’s certified program also includes a 110-point inspection, so paying more than the cheapest listing starts to make sense when the difference buys you documented servicing, recall completion, and warranty coverage bundled in.

The Expensive Hardware Has Depreciated Along With The Bike

What makes that pricing unusual is how much motorcycle still comes with it. The 1,252cc Revolution Max 1250 is a liquid-cooled V-twin with double overhead cams, variable valve timing, and hydraulic valve-lash adjustment. The engine forms a structural part of the chassis rather than hanging inside a conventional full frame, and Harley claimed 150 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque for it.

The Pan America 1250 Special brought semi-active Showa suspension with automatic rear preload adjustment, heated grips, cruise control, tire-pressure monitoring, a center stand, an adaptive headlight, and cornering-sensitive electronic aids. Adaptive Ride Height was a $1,000 factory option that lowers the bike when coming to a stop, while tubeless laced wheels cost another $500. These are functional ADV upgrades that the second owner now benefits much more financially than the first one.

The Cheapest Pan America Is Not Necessarily The Best One

It’s easy to get persuaded by the attractive price point, but a word of caution is warranted. This is still a first-year motorcycle with plenty of electronics, so the condition and history of the bike are more important than finding the lowest price in a search result. The 2021 models received Body Control Module software updates, while Harley later issued an Engine Control Module update and a service bulletin covering an updated Revolution Max starter-clutch gear for 2021 and 2022 motorcycles.

Confirm that applicable recalls have been completed for the bike that you’re narrowing down on. Check which software updates were performed, listen for abnormal starting behavior, and test the semi-active suspension and Adaptive Ride Height system, if fitted. Since the latter was optional, it’s prudent to go through the factory equipment list as it varies between bikes. A Special with cast wheels and no lowering system should not command the same money as an otherwise comparable example with both. Luggage, engine protection, auxiliary lighting, and touring accessories can further alter the value.

A New Yamaha Ténéré 700 Is An Enticing Alternative

A 2026 Yamaha Ténéré 700 starts at $10,999, which is close enough to the cheaper used Harley Pan America Specials that the same buyer could realistically consider either. The Yamaha gives you a brand-new motorcycle, a factory warranty, a proven and reliable 689cc parallel twin, a 21-inch front wheel, 9.4 inches of ground clearance, and a much simpler approach to adventure riding.

It is also considerably lighter. Harley lists the 2021 Pan America 1250 Special at 559 pounds in running order, while the current Ténéré 700 weighs 459 pounds wet. That’s a 100-pound difference that can matter if your riding sees a lot of enduro-style trails that no semi-active suspension setting can make tackling it any easier. But if your riding leans toward highway miles, back roads, gravel tracks, with luggage, and two-up travel, then the Harley’s brings features for roughly Ténéré money.
