Mass-market SUVs are supposed to be sensible. They carry groceries, survive school runs, and spend most of their lives moving families between parking lots. Exciting rarely enters the conversation, especially when the badge on the nose belongs to Volkswagen
However, the German carmaker has clearly decided that practical does not need to mean painfully boring. Its newest American-built SUV has returned with sharper styling, a more powerful engine, and an interior that sounds suspiciously luxurious for something designed to battle everyday family crossovers. It even brings a few clever features you would normally expect to find much farther up the automotive food chain. The result could make buyers reconsider how much they really need that premium badge.
The Most Powerful Atlas Cross Sport Ever Packs 282 Horsepower
The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport receives the most powerful engine ever fitted to the model. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-banger now summons 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, representing a 13-hp increase over the outgoing SUV. Volkswagen says this latest EA888 evo5 engine is essentially all-new and uses a variable-geometry turbocharger. That technology is designed to improve response across a wider section of the rev range, potentially helping the big five-seat SUV feel less sleepy when its driver puts the pedal down.
An eight-speed automatic transmission remains responsible for sending power to the wheels. Front-wheel drive is standard, while VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup. Buyers who regularly haul boats or weekend toys will also retain a 5,000-pound towing capacity when the SUV is equipped with its factory-installed trailer hitch.
Volkswagen has not released acceleration figures, but nobody should confuse this thing with an Atlas Cross Sport R. The extra muscle is about making highway merges and passing maneuvers more rewarding rather than transforming a family SUV into a tire-smoking monster. Still, 282 horses should give this chunkier VW enough grunt to keep its sporty looks from writing checks the engine cannot cash. An available hybrid will join the party when the Atlas Cross Sport receives its midcycle refresh, although Volkswagen has not revealed any specifications for that model.
VW Made Its Family SUV Look Considerably More Expensive
The second-generation Atlas Cross Sport wears completely new sheet metal and looks lower, wider, and considerably more planted than its predecessor. Compared with the seven-seat Atlas, it is 5.4 inches shorter and 2.1 inches lower, with a steeply raked rear pillar helping create its coupe-like profile.
Up front, stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, and a muscular hood give the SUV a much stronger face. Most trims also receive two illuminated light strips and a glowing VW badge, because apparently one light bar is no longer enough in 2027. A sharp character line runs along the sides and emphasizes the beefy fenders, while body-colored rocker panels clean up the lower portion of the SUV.\
Available illuminated door handles project a unique puddle-light pattern onto the ground. Around back, the tailgate now sits flush with the bumper, and the full-width taillights include dynamic turn signals and animated welcome lighting. Wheel sizes range from 18 inches on the base version to new 20- and 21-inch designs on higher trims. Buyers can also choose from three new colors: Dark Sage Metallic, Sandstone, and the wonderfully dramatic Blackberry Metallic.
It is still a practical Volkswagen built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but this redesign seems determined to look like it sneaked out of an Audi showroom wearing a fake mustache.
Massaging Seats And A 15-Inch Screen Bring The Luxury
Volkswagen has completely redesigned the cabin around a bold architectural loop stretching across the dashboard. Soft-touch materials, gray wood trim, contrasting stitching, and three available interior color schemes help separate the new Atlas Cross Sport from the usual sea of black plastic.
Most models receive a giant 15-inch infotainment display, while the base version uses a still-substantial 12.9-inch screen. Every trim includes a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro gauge cluster and a new console-mounted dial for controlling volume, drive modes, and the customizable Atmospheres feature.
The top two trims offer 30-color ambient lighting, including a backlit spiral design that stretches from the dashboard into the doors. Higher-spec models also bring Nappa or Varenna leather, thigh support, passenger-seat memory, and improved full-back massaging seats for both front occupants.
Standard equipment includes a hands-free power liftgate, rear sunshades, front and rear parking sensors, dual hatch lights, and a nine-speaker audio system. A 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup is available on the top trim. There is also space to wirelessly charge two phones simultaneously, along with five USB-C ports.
Travel Assist can provide hands-on assisted driving at speeds up to 95 mph and now supports driver-initiated lane changes. Emergency Assist Plus can even guide the SUV to the side of the road if it detects a medical emergency.
Pricing will be announced before the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport reaches dealerships in early 2027. Volkswagen has sold more than 220,000 examples since 2020, but this new model has a bigger job than simply maintaining that momentum. It must convince buyers that a mass-market family hauler can deliver power, style, and seriously sweet features without demanding premium-brand money.
